How Google's Smart Compose for Gmail works – and did it fake its robo-caller demo?

Did Google fake its Duplex demo? No answers here.

Well if they don't use their AI to reply to journalists that was obviously faked.

WinHatter

Isn't HBO a bit too visible ?

First rule of business when you do something illegal : keep it quiet.

Don't go HBO, don't brag and if it fails don't release your treasure trove as you are losing all leverage and creating yet another trail.

You need to be reasonable and forgettable.

Gimme a bitcoin worth of beer so I can forget all about it.

Why don't people secure their IoT gadgets? 'It's not my problem'

WinHatter
WTF?

Who needs a bluetooth connected toothbrush ...

... anyway ???

The worst part with those ID-IoTs ; they, at times, force you to go through the manufacturer's website for administration tasks.

I made the mistake of buying a WiFi enabled thermostat (Honeywell) but to use it I need to register this sheeet with Honeywell and go through their hosted website to have access to me sodding thermostat. And I paid extra !!! Stupid me.

WTF !!!

So pending the cracking of the set of commands that will allow me to use the thermostat in a local manner I am not using that IoT.

The device can be hacked ... but the manufacturer can be hacked too divulging a wealth of information on when to visit your house.

But does it work ?

I guess it would work when there are a couple of targeted IMEIs.

On a large scale ??? Meh. The laundry van with a series of hangers to hide the antennas next to the semi with a 300KVA generator running ... may be a bit of a giveaway.

To actively follow a whole crowd that may require a few extra amps a car alternator may not have.

At the start of a demonstration call your buddy next to you so the Stingray has to handle both ends of the conversation and leave the line open. Not sure the device will be able to handle that many duds.

Leaving the EU is an economic decision.

As such we should recount the weighted average of the Leave vote percentage and the contribution to the GDP of every constituencies.

To add insult to injury subtract the GDP created by EU members that may not receive an Visa under the new rules but only in constituencies where Leave% > 50.

How your data loss prevention plan is killing your business

WinHatter
Pint

Palmerston North Re: It is not just about numbers here

Woahhh you had to go back 2 years ... a backup in good order would have been much more adequate.

1) Your company backed up corrupt data ... that can happen but going 2 years without checking its consistency ... that is bad. But at least you have learnt your "Lesson 2" which makes Lesson1 a moot point.

2) Before doing something very sensitive make sure you have the proper procedure and equipment at hand. Usually in HA things come in twos ... at the very least .. so test things before going commando on the production line.

I would add

3) Old backup may be completely useless when they have not been migrated. I've lived such an example where the servers went from x86 to Sparc and the application from C++ to Java ... good luck with finding a 20 year old server in working condition ... may prove extremely costly when data retentive lawyers kick in.

On that point lucky for you the backups agreed with the current firmware/hardware on the switch.

Google : begging for attention

OOOh that must be killing them !!!

Google may love Apple kit but the only thing Apple loves is selling its kit ... they can't care less about their customers, unless there is a class action they won't replace your iPod battery let alone provide you with a tool.

Google let's say you are not worthy ... so shut up or they will get a restraining order. You won't be allowed anywhere near an Apple Store & your IPs prevented from connecting to their online version.

There is no point in migrating something that runs fine to Win 7, the difficulty and costs will be the same migrating it to Win 9 or X.

If you add energy matters ... an XP PC will run on 85 W a Win 7 probably needs 120 Watts ... when a Celeron 700 MHz Win 98 25 Watts ... and frankly the less crap users can run on their PC the better.

WinHatter

sure time is money, but implementing such a tiering may be time consuming and the horsepower and brains to do that costs money as well. Plus your DB may be locked because some old fart is updating their eerily old data on a very slow cassette tape.

Add that moving data back and forth may well end in losing it to a "I did not consider that potential failure" ...

I'm sure adding a faster disk array to an existing storage pool when filled up is more efficient ... so just dimension your storage for a 6 month period so you can enjoy the benefits of newer and faster tech for your newer data ...
