Royal Navy warship almost fires on UFOs

Re: Lewis gets it wrong, again!

Mark, please read the article then comment you retard! Lewis was merely quoting another article (written by the Telegraph) before verbally anihalating it.

Lewis, please keep these articles coming its always comfoting to read how impotent our military actually is regardless of the endless propoganda thrown at us "they wouldnt understand" civvies by the top brass.

Unfortunately I had the misfortune of using the cadet version of the SA80 (bolt action) during school and I tended to find it more effective if I just picked the bullets up and overarm lobbed them down the range! I can only hope the full blown version is somewhat better, but from what I hear from friends now in the forces I doubt it.

What do you expect

With all due respect. What do you expect with a manufacturer who buys components of whoever will sell them cheapst and be damned with the quality assurance and compatability.

Its just a shame they apply the same principle to their servers (you try deploying standard images to 10 "identical" servers (according to dell) whiich were all procured at the same time then wondering why 6 of them wont boot due to having different mainboard manufacturers and different BIOS's!).

re: Where is the Sun Blade Server comparison?

Yawn! Give it up Sun are dead as everyone who lives in reality has realised/been saying for the past 6 months!

Oh and if Sun's products were really that good overall (instead of having some nice technical one offs (mostly because other manufacturers concentrate on what actually matters!)) why have they conststenly underperformed compared to their R&D and engineering talent?

Oh and your Sun blades arent as revolutionary as you thought. 4 hex cores in a blade, yep HP can do that, I fail to see your point?

Reg wheres the sunshiner still living in the clouds icon?

As for the rest of the article I find it amusing that Fijitsu claim that their blades chassis consumes less power yet admit that each blade can't hold as much RAM, that should be a nice chunk of the "saved" energy consumption then! I would be interested to see if their fans are more efficient seeing as HP have some pretty clever Thermalogic tech that means they spool down fans to their minimum required level (whilst still keeping reasonable internal temps, unlike the IBM stuff) coupled with the pretty efficient fan design.

Oracle 'faster, cheaper' with VMware

VMware script kiddies at it again!

I think this is an example of the increasing prevalence of VMware type fanbois to try and make grandiose claims without actual empirical evidence. I’ve yet to meet a VMware admin who doesn’t try and make a claim that VMware is "revolutionary" and that its HA/DRS technologies are new. There is a reason that people still run true enterprise systems using technologies like RAC and on proper fault tolerant hardware/software stacks.

I think previous posters have explained why Chris Mellor’s poor comparison is lacking! (Something I’ve noticed more increasingly of your so called "assessments" recently) so I wont repeat them but its something I am seeing in the industry more and more. People attempting to shoehorn systems that previously running on the systems with the appropriate levels of RAS onto "cheap" x86/virtualised stacks, all looks good until they have a genuine outage, you never realize what you used to have until you need it!

Remember people you get what you pay for! VMware has some good technologies and it has certainly bought a good useable virtualized platform to the masses, but it lacks in some of the higher availability features.

IBM 'in talks' to buy Sun Microsystems

Re: SUN has not been purchased yet...

You seem to be confusing revenues with profit. It is true that SUN had a good time in the dot com era.

Unfortunately when I refer to financials I am referring to the ability to constantly ensure a good flow of high margin turnover, something HP and IBM do very well. This also means adapting and changing your business to the market conditions. SUN were very well setup (and still are) for cashing in on web type applications that require high thread throughput and excellent efficiency in running web code (think Java et al). Unfortunatley theur prodcut has not shown the same ability in running other more general applications with the same levels of efficency/availability and more importantly TCO (having a well established services arm helps you keep these low). Unfortunately their business model of "open" has not shown any ROI as of yet and Im afriad time is running out. They have negative cash flow and the bucket is starting to run out (not that it was that big a bucket in the first place, just look at HP and IBM's buckets!!)

I also commented that it doesnt matter what happens now, SUN has a tarnished reputation. I have spoken to 3 customers in the past few days who have expressed various levels of dismay/disappoinment at this announcement. However one thing thay all have in common is they no longer see SUN as a viable vendor for their long term large strategic products, its nothing to do wiht product and everything to do with risk.

Oh and to the AC who keeps confusing me with MB can you stop embarassing yourself.

Thanks,

Adam
