fon

Has no-one noticed...

... that 10 sept was just a TEST using just one beam, and no collisions??? they will not be doing a basic colllision untill it gets upto speed, in about a month.... and it may be Dec. before things really start happening...

(only did a quick scan of posts, so..)

meanwhile, here is a comicstrip view... :)

Virgin Media ads throttled by peak time bandwidth squeeze

fon

hey, no probs...

I still say the problem is lack of *official* info from BE.... sure, you are one of the many lucky ones(and you STILL do not say where you live, what type of usage.)... Just like VM in richmond and twickenham - I have friends there who have NO problems, are continously getting full speed, getting great CS, loading lots of albums, films, etc... recently 'seeded' a 500M film, finished it in 5 mins - it would have taken my old BT line a few hours, IF there were no probs.... newsgroups are great, no more thread limitations...

I say this for all the anti-VM malcontents, who cannot *bother* to find all the help on the website, (available to *non-members* to check as well!), to help find all details needed to 'get you running' ...

If you can get BE to add that level of detail, then it would sure help....

fon

just a bit of 'history'.. :)

Before BB was affordable, loading files more than a few hundred meg was not considered practical on dialup.. Now on BB, no-one worries about it... It only takes hours, not days!

- the bad side is, the website authors are using this extra bandwidth too, making ever bigger, heavier websites... even MS expects you to download megabytse of fixes every week/month!!! and the poor, on dialup(yes, even in USA!) get more probs...

If 20Mb ever becomes the 'norm' , as 2 or 6 Mb is today, (I'm using *realistic' figures!) then I will bet much bigger things happen.... bluray downloads, browser ads that look like the tv ads, etc, etc... but we'll have to wait....

I do not think so though, due to people's hate of 'investing for the future' unlike many other more intelligent places in the world - to say nothing about giant, ancient company infrastructure, that was never designed for it!

they will just go on expecting it 'as a right' wanting to get ever more, from an underfinanced system, due to their greed, and lack of understanding about how it works...

fon

but do you trust BT?????

- I think you will find that if BT get FTTH, and it is attractive enough to most people, then of course lots will move to it, and THEY will start getting congestion and too many big downloads, etc.... and I bet they will be in the same position as most very popular ISPs are in now!! - lack of bandwidth, and no-one wanting to pay more....

If the dream of all this new tech does happen, I am sure BT will mess it up, just like they are doing now....

fon

ah, old times....

ollyc: well your service may have been good, but most hated it!! a point to note is, most TalkTalk customers use an AOL email address.... My mate has been using it since december, with no problems - just avoid the phone support, and use the talktalkforum - quick results, and beats waiting hours on the phone!! :)

yes, TW may have been good, but numbers were much less then, and the phone support was usually clueless & pointless! - at least VM is friendly...

Mainly the problems are caused by bad marketing, companies believing the over the top words of their own salesmen, without realizing it is not possible...

If a garage said it can serve 1000 people per hour, would you believe it??

- not when you realize that means you would have to drive in, fill up, pay the bill, drive out in only 3.6 seconds!!!!

Andrew: The cab may be good for 50M, but how many is this shared to??? you rightly say that of course there are plenty of other 'speed bumps' - a good reason NOT to get a *guaranteed* 20Mb line... I remember when I first got 8M, I had to slow down my browser, due to many sites 'overloading'... it is possible today, but you have to *pay* for it, and then find other problems...

Sure, you may have a 10G network at home/work, but how long are the cables?? how much intereference over the length do they get from road traffic, road works, weather conditions, lightning strikes, etc???? and of course there would be no interference from other services, like telephone, TV, etc....

Sure you could maybe wire up a street this way, but have you figured in the cost of digging up all the roads? to say nothing about getting the customer to pay for it!!!

I dont think they would pay the average 1000 - 2000 cost.....

others: The next BIG problem is that due to all this stupid 'unlimited, very cheap' advertising, people are getting too greedy, wanting something for nothing - this just does not work in the real world... so go on, leave... it will just make it better for the decent guys... :)

fon

more FACTS about ADSL, BE, etc....

well actually, VM is now the NO 2 provider, behind SKY!! (only about 600,000 behind..)

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/review/top10.php

- and if you have a better PUBLIC source, please do give the URL....

Martin Nicholls: thanks for some PROPER info... :)

- it seems people are just NOT doing the research here, just guessing!!!

yes, the old analogue telephone only uses two wires! the third you may see is for the ringer, usually disconnected...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone

and er, ADSL is about the 'signal' not the wire used - you cannot 'switch to something else'..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adsl

ollyc: please clarify... do you mean the AOL that is managed by carphonewharehouse (CPW), or the previous 'owner' ???

- either way, CPW uses BT lines, whether you pay your line rental to them or BT...

VM CABLE does not use BT lines in any shape or form - unless you are talking about the old NON-CABLE service, that uses the old BT ADSL wires, and will have ALL the same problems as all those that use it!

Kieron McCann: 128K?? that is a load of rot! Unless you are talking 'average bandwidth per customer' ?? - this mean divide the normal useage (say 4pm to 4am?? - 12 hours) by 24hours = half the normal rate, then take a rough figure of 60% that have it installed, already the rate is only 30% of normal!!

When I was on tiscali until nov. 2007, I was regularly getting, and downloading at 8Mb/s with no problems d/l-ing albums vids, etc... then they must have made a **really bad** decision (bad, cheap DSLAM, argument with BT, etc???) - It goes to show, DO NOT cut corners, customers disappear...

I looked at the market, and saw how hopeless it was... it was always BT getting in the way, digruntled BT workers having to work on lines that were actually used for, or being changed to, CPW or other non-BT services... I heard even of one that just 'went for parts' and never returned....

That is why I went for VM CABLE - no 'middleman' problems, and good support (My area is old telewest) - I do realise that NTL areas are still working through stuff, due to their bad equipment!!

Also can people say what area and TYPE of service they are using? ANY service that still uses a BT LINE of course will get all the same problems!!

This of course INCLUDES BEthere... look at this review..

http://www.pcw.co.uk/personal-computer-world/software/2157542/unlimited-isp-review

- they were 800m point to point from the exchange, so only got 6Mbits/sec service.

The main reason I did not do Bethere, is the info on the website is virtually non-existant!!! - Unless you have a member login? a bit pointless, you need the info BEFORE!

By contrast, all the info is there on most other ISPs... good reviews from ZDNET, etc, but they are not in my area....

Microsoft says ‘hasta la vista XP’ - well, kinda

fon

still confusion then...

@Ian Ferguson:

what do you mean 'get away with'??

you can buy XP + SP2 for about £50..

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=OS-001-MS

as said, the extended support policy runs to April 2014..

so give them a ring as I did, they did not need me to buy anything else, just understand that it is for experienced users only...

- activation was quick and simple, no need for telephone support..

vista maniacs: yes, it IS possible to get it working lovely, even easier if the vendor has done it for you...

- but then you load some DVD-util program(nero, realplayer, etc...), and find it has taken the 'associations' away for its use, and you cannot see where to restore WMP11 player functions...

- the truth is, you cannot do this, it is locked!! attempts to 'upgrade or repair' wmp11 are met with "the player you want to use is older than that installed!" and you can go no further, until WMP12 ...

@Paul Ashbrook: I think the point is, buy a pc with vista (it is cheaper, due to MS deals with the company!), then just reformat, install *your* OS... BUT make sure the company you buy it from has good OS support, in case of 'strange' components! :D

@linux scaredy-cats: hey guys, its FREE!!! (as long as you agree to the open source stuff!! = for the simple guy at home that does mean no money given...)

- if a Granma can do it, you can, other wise wimps can just send lots of cash to MS!!!!

Virgin Media and BPI join forces to attack illegal filesharing

fon

all the usual idiots, I see....

at least Brian Gannon has the right idea....

- and I dont think you will be any safer at BE, anon!!

I am not going to *bother* to read all the others, skinflints, malicious downloaders, and alll...

as some have said, go on change ISP, and leave the normal guys to it, and of course, the bandwidth and quality will improve due to you leaving!!!

Just like some avoid the motorways, knowing that they will be congested - it may take a bit longer, but at least you will be moving, and enjoying the view, chance to stop and have a picnic, unlike those sitting in a jam, getting hot and bothered, miles from the next exit, etc, etc...

It is good to see VM thinking about those who most likely do not know *how* to get to here - It is usually 'little johnny' that knows it all, etc...

Phorm opponents to picket BT shareholders

fon

ahh, a reply... missing the point though..

yada yada yada... all the beefing about the tech, about how they are 'spying on us' etc.... sure... If you do not yet understand that doing *anything* on the internet is like standing up in the main square, shouting about it using a megaphone....

- and all you are worried about, is someone hearing your 'shopping list' ????

It is a bit like using a credit card... they *know* where you are, what shops you use.... are you really that bothered if they know how many times you visted the 'massage parlour' ?? :D

and I will ask again, about phorm, why all the fuss??? what IS the difference from all the OTHER ways of tracking usage???

I am NOT saying that 'for effect' - I WANT TO KNOW!!!

STILL no-one has explained what the difference is... is it only the paranoid, and those trying to download masses from from thier ISP, who naturally want to track malicious users that do not want to pay a fair price???

fon

well they dont get mine (see my last post)

I do not know about the *loonies* who leave their PC on 24/7 though... talk about a B I G target!!!

regularly clearing your temp data (most will do it for you, no thought involved except settittng it! ) and switching off your PC will be greener, and safer! :) :)

fon

Is it just the terrorists and paranoid here??

surely, if you have a good firewall, so that your PC is basically not detectable, and your IP is *nothing* like the real one, and all packets are inspected for content, to say nothing about all cookies and content cleared or just rejected, why the problem???

- NO, nothing special, you can buy this from maplin for £40... have a look at the netgear stuff..

why all the fuss??? no, really, what is the difference from all the OTHER ways of tracking usage???

And if the clueless gov. is hoping to use this to track all the dubious groups, then what about the 'wireless router hidden in false wall' trick that will stop even the experts knowing where the PC is??

I suppose it is poor joe pubilc that will have to suffer again, from this stupidity...

fon

StillNoCouch: my thoughts exactly....

and google, etc, etc, etc should have **no part** in filtering - there are proper programs to do this like netnanny, etc for those prudes that want it.. and just like the video shop, you should be able to show your registration, to show you CAN handle the stuff....

As for your 'little kiddies' there is a common rule used on the internet:

FYOS rule: - If you would not like your Four Year Old Sister seeing it, then do not do so... and link to that with BIG warnings..

EDUCATION is far more effective for 'curious kids' - most loving families will have explained about relationships and love, so that it is treated with respect...

beyond that, if you search for it, you will find it, even in a dictionary!

dissapointed Opera user, thinking about FF...

the latest 'betabeta' (10005 & 10014) of opera has solved some issues, like cpu overloading etc,

but try this on FF.. (I know it sounds a bit nutty, read on and try it please!! )

how long does it take for 'rightclick' to show a menu?

goto the down arrow on the scrollbar and click - how long does it take to 'start scrolling' ??

On opera it takes about a second.. on opera beta2 no delay is noticable...

Why they could not do this with vista is a mystery, or just stupid overconfidence...

BUT no, they cannot understand 'volume selling'... they only look at how much money they can get, and 'protecting property' - this is a red rag to the buying public, who can afford less & less, and of course the crackers, who *love* putting 'too rich' people's nose out of joint!!

TV from ISP...

This is handled differently by most ISPs, it is NOT part of the users 'internet' , so will not be affected by any *imposed* restrictions! ( and I'll bet it will be a locked, nonstandard format anyway...)

The TV that is available through various other methods (winamp, web, etc..) of course will use the standard ISP account, and costing etc...

@Duncan: Most people do not have the money to get a *television* that will do 1920x1200 - rather wasteful, as HD only does 1920× 1080 ... but hey, its your money...

You may be happy with gaming on a 24" screen, but most want to watch movies on a good size screen! - It is up to the buyer to make sure they get their money's worth, and make sure they are not ripped off by false promises! this is why most say dont use a small screen for HD...

Of course, 'your mileage may very' -depending on the quality of a lot of other things!

fon

it is the arguing that killed 'em...

If they could have *shut up* and agreed to a dual-format deck, then the price would reduce due to sales, and each format would then fall or stand by its *actual* merits etc, not what various people(inc the industry!) thought would happen...

many have brought out an 'uncrackable' system, only to have it cracked on the exhibition floor, in only 5 mins! - so whatever really happens with the final spec, I would bet it gets cracked very soon..

'alcholism' VS 'likes to drink a bit'

There is world of difference!

'alcholism' = you cannot last a day, an hour even, without alchol - usually typified by bottles being hidden everywhere...

'likes to drink a bit' = hey, it's raining outside, the temp is 5 degrees, "no, mate, drank too much last night, still suffering...."

UNLIMITED???? and how do you think YOU can maintain that????

the problem is the greedy users!

it works fine, because most cannot eat that much... until you get those people coming in, that CAN eat 50 pizzas, and then stay there the whole day, using the facilties, and then invite their mates....

Pretty soon you have to suppy 200 pizzas(for only 4 people!) a day, all at the price you have stated....

How long will it be before you go bust??? or will you try to reduce the quality of pizzas, limit the number of pizzas per day, say your offer only applies to very basic pizzas (so the 'normal' customer does not complain about the quality, or just stays away..)

does this scenario seem familiar???

BitTorrenters seek sanctuary in Pirate Bay

fon

good points...

very true, Studebaker... If I may add a point or few...

when they sell new release DVDs for £5 each, I will be the *first* to buy *two or three** - people will be buying them all, 'cos they are much better than anything the 'net or the pirates can do...

But... 'stealing **TV** shows' ??? (you do mean the ones that normally arrive through aerial/dish/cable I hope...) how long is it, since you have seen a *new* one that has not had bits chopped out, ads put in, various words blanked, unless it is encrypted(and even this can be fixed..) to stop you recording it??

most just wait a few more months, and get the DVD...

and as for 'downloading it' - it is only USA's fault, for releasing it there first!!! - again, if it was released *globally* for £5, everyone would be happy, except the pirates....

for those to lazy to link..

Mike, wake up and get a mag!! all the stuff is on disc...

BitTwister, you oviously have not read that link, acid2 is **all about** support for complex data types like HTML4, CSS1, PNG, and Data URLs. It also tests for reaction to badly coded CSS - here is a list for the lazy!!

Transparent PNGs — The eyes are encoded as transparent PNGs.

The object element — The eyes of the face are attached to an object element. Being able to use object (which can have alternative content) is one of the oldest requests from web designers.

Absolute, relative and fixed positioning — Being able to position elements accurately is important for advanced page layouts.

Box model — The original Acid test focused on the CSS box model. Acid2 continues in this fine tradition by testing ‘height’, ‘width’, ‘max-width’, ‘min-width’, ‘max-height’ and ‘min-height’.

CSS tables — There is nothing wrong with table layouts. It is a powerful layout model which makes sense on bigger screens. However, the table markup is troublesome as it ties the content to these screens. Therefore, being able to specify table layouts in CSS is important.

Margins — CSS defines accurate algorithms for how margins around elements should be calculated.

Generated content — The ability to add decorations and annotations to Web pages without modifying the markup has long been requested by authors.

CSS parsing — Acid2 includes a number of illegal CSS statements that should be ignored by a compliant browser.

Paint order — We test that overlapping content is painted in the right order. This is not a feature in itself, but a requirement for other features to work correctly.

Line heights — The Acid2 test checks a few key parts of the CSS inline box model, upon which any standards-compliant Web page depends.

Hovering effects — One of the elements in the face changes color when you hover over it. Which one?

fon

you can STOP IE in Vista!!

Well I have just got a new laptop with Vista - I was bit dubious at first, but it helps if the shop has installed it, and sorted out ony problems there may be, and that you make sure the cpu is powerful enough! (no less than 2GHz!)

- after I have reduced all the 'flashy pointless stuff' down to 'classic' mode, you will find a lot of old stuff starts working properly!! then switch OFF the UAC(unless you WANT an 'old granny' constantly saying 'dont go there, its not safe!' )

And to stop IE, just search for 'iexplore' (use a third party tool!) and rename it or its folder!! - now any 'net calls go straight to Opera....

compatbility?? try this test, FF2 and IE& fail badly!!!

most have no clue..

Duncan Hothersall - the problem with most banks and large companies, is they have **no clue** about the tech, just look at the 'finance' end, without considering how it got there... So an 'official website creator' is contracted to 'do it the MS way' so it works well with the MS OS... I bet they are even wondering why this does not work!!! :) :)

at least spain and portugal has some sense...

alphaxion: no, it is not about choice, whatever... It is about apealling to the 'lowest form of life'! :)

- all 'joe idiot' wants is a PC for internet, and be shown what button to press... (MS *knows* this!!!) - and when his website he has made works, then he is happy, and of course luvs MS...

THAT is why they have made the browser *ignore* all the bad coding, to prevent a 'customer support nightmare' !!

It all then goes 'higher up' to those that use this 'feature' to make really fancy websites to attract more people, that of course 'break' in 'secure' browsers due to bad coding....

I am sure FF has added some 'not that secure'(shush! its a secret!!) features as above, to 'please the users' ...

Opera has all but 'lost it' because it wont 'play dirty' like FF will...

fon

lot of brainless sheep here....

check the phone socket, lines filters(they can dry out, and newer ones will be better now than 5 years ago!), length and quality of cable, connections, anything that cable passes that could create interference, etc, etc...

basically I would find a place as near as possible to where the phone cable comes in, and connect the modem there.. then cat5 network cable from a router...

Digital Switchover: town to lose BBC 2 tomorrow

its up to you...

As for freeview signal quality... the real trial will be 14 nov, when ALL the channels switch off, and the signal power can be greatly increased - I guess they have just swiched over one, to make sure anything bad happens to only one channel!! :)

The people I blame for the current state of retail, is the **utter skinflints** in this country!! They refuse to pay a good price for a very high quality piece of kit, and then they expect to play their *total crap quality* downloaded movies on it!!! - this is the main reason a lot of companies only release them in europe, where people understand that you have to pay good money not *just* for good kit, but also to support the industry, so they can continue to do so...

And of course all this strain on the UK industry to produce cheap stuff means that the quality goes down, giving the skinflints that caused it more reason to grumble...

the next effect of reducing prices is the death of the rental industry, and also of the small repair shop - people just buy a new one, instead of getting it repaired.. I am a technician, so I understand the problem with these plasma screens - all the electronics inside is virtually 'failproof' - it is the high-voltage powersupply and screen that usually go, and as these make up 90% of the price, basically 'unrepairable'... LCD uses a much better low voltage, so are much better... Myself, I am hanging onto my CRT, supporting my repairshop when it goes wrong, until at least 2012 when there will most likely be *even* better TV screens out!!

So again, I would say it is the skinflints killing the business... those who just download their tv, and dont even bother that the quality is worse than that got through RF, or even VCR.. yes, it maybe 'sharp', but the colours are washed out, the dark scenes non-existant, the fast scenes a jumpy mess...

On to connectors... If you TV still has only an aerial input, then how *cheap* are you??? - and pensioners have an excuse!

I think analogue connectors WILL appear on newer tvs, due to customer demand... and if you dont demand it, you deserve what you get!!!

I remind you of the launch of SKY HD.. they did not have anything other than HDMI, and the *only* monitor to support it.... that did not work!! :D :D I dont remember the outcome, except that HD boxes DO now have non-digital outputs...

So when you are looking for a new TV, make sure you do your research... Do you know that most 'HD-ready' TVs will only do upto 720 lines?? yes, they do say 1080, but the screen specs say 1024 x 768... you see the problem?

It is only people demanding ways to connect their consoles, and the connectors they want, that will get them... if you are mad about TRUE HD, you will need to PAY!

Meanwhile 'component HD' is still a good competitor for HDMI...

grumpy old gits!!

yes I mean you Adrian... and tell me one thing, what TV do you watch???

do you have a 'non-sky' sattelite?? well ok, if you can understand startrek in german, 'lost' in swedish, and 'stargate' in turkish.. and also do not mind the female parts being voiced by a man!!

If you just have SKY sat, then you need to maintain it!!(you know, like that car you love...:-) ) rust, dirt, and other things can degrade the signal you are getting, only noticable on the weaker channels that come from the SAME direction...

At its simplest, all it may need it just a good clean!! next check that connectors are solid, the parts of the dish(LNB, arm, reflector, fixings) are not cracked or dented, and check all the parts are solidly fixed...

the rest of you grumby old men, WAIT until it happens, dont use ancient and unreliable boxes, and contact the BBC about issues... I'm sure they want 'good feedback'!

Adrian...

I think you will find the same 'utter drivel' on freeview as well....

I would like to see where else you would get all your sports, movies, etc when the pubs are shut!!!

- and you are taking utter drivel about getting a sat signal.. the 'line of sight' is usually only about 20 to 30 degrees from 'straight up'... and a good installer will know how to get a good signal in almost ANY location.. even for a Motorhome!!! yes, you just need to ask your local sat shop... auto-leveling dishes for boats, lowvoltage sets, etc...

and before the 'mania' sets in, how many people here *actually* live in cumbria?? If you do not, you have another *year* to get ready... further south, 2 , 3, or 5 years!!!

I would like to bet, that when it becomes *necessary* to go digital, the price of everything will drop like a stone.... If there is a large demand for it, it will be easier for prices to go down....
