I still say the problem is lack of *official* info from BE.... sure, you are one of the many lucky ones(and you STILL do not say where you live, what type of usage.)... Just like VM in richmond and twickenham - I have friends there who have NO problems, are continously getting full speed, getting great CS, loading lots of albums, films, etc... recently 'seeded' a 500M film, finished it in 5 mins - it would have taken my old BT line a few hours, IF there were no probs.... newsgroups are great, no more thread limitations...

I say this for all the anti-VM malcontents, who cannot *bother* to find all the help on the website, (available to *non-members* to check as well!), to help find all details needed to 'get you running' ...

If you can get BE to add that level of detail, then it would sure help....

as said, the extended support policy runs to April 2014..

so give them a ring as I did, they did not need me to buy anything else, just understand that it is for experienced users only...

- activation was quick and simple, no need for telephone support..

vista maniacs: yes, it IS possible to get it working lovely, even easier if the vendor has done it for you...

- but then you load some DVD-util program(nero, realplayer, etc...), and find it has taken the 'associations' away for its use, and you cannot see where to restore WMP11 player functions...

- the truth is, you cannot do this, it is locked!! attempts to 'upgrade or repair' wmp11 are met with "the player you want to use is older than that installed!" and you can go no further, until WMP12 ...

@Paul Ashbrook: I think the point is, buy a pc with vista (it is cheaper, due to MS deals with the company!), then just reformat, install *your* OS... BUT make sure the company you buy it from has good OS support, in case of 'strange' components! :D

as some have said, go on change ISP, and leave the normal guys to it, and of course, the bandwidth and quality will improve due to you leaving!!!

It would be a lot different! when XP was realesed, it was a lot of %&*$#, but it was mostly solved by its SP1, and fully solved by SP2...

Hey I would like to support that, But there are already plenty of Bluray users..... and most are either too busy trying to keep their life going, to bother about computers, or understanding them!

The next thing is, a format needs **support** before it gets any where.... minidisc, anyone??? - this actually appeared in shops, but where is it now??? certainly not in my local HMV, where it was a few years ago....

After the great failure that was HDDVD, it will take a big, big, chance to try it...

and what will the 'shop movie' industry do???

**IF** they had any brains or courage, they would sell 'first release' vids at £10 a shot, secondaries at £5 - this would mean a lot more would buy a 'proper box set' , and would be worth it for the shop... and also drive the 'pirates' out of business!!

BUT no, they cannot understand 'volume selling'... they only look at how much money they can get, and 'protecting property' - this is a red rag to the buying public, who can afford less & less, and of course the crackers, who *love* putting 'too rich' people's nose out of joint!!

I am looking forward to next year, when 'multiregion patched' Bluray players come out just like DVD ones did years ago.... :):)

TV from ISP...

This is handled differently by most ISPs, it is NOT part of the users 'internet' , so will not be affected by any *imposed* restrictions! ( and I'll bet it will be a locked, nonstandard format anyway...)

The TV that is available through various other methods (winamp, web, etc..) of course will use the standard ISP account, and costing etc...

@Duncan: Most people do not have the money to get a *television* that will do 1920x1200 - rather wasteful, as HD only does 1920× 1080 ... but hey, its your money...

You may be happy with gaming on a 24" screen, but most want to watch movies on a good size screen! - It is up to the buyer to make sure they get their money's worth, and make sure they are not ripped off by false promises! this is why most say dont use a small screen for HD...

Of course, 'your mileage may very' -depending on the quality of a lot of other things!

go on, set up a cafe, promising UNLIMITED pizza for only one standard payment per day...

it works fine, because most cannot eat that much... until you get those people coming in, that CAN eat 50 pizzas, and then stay there the whole day, using the facilties, and then invite their mates....

Pretty soon you have to suppy 200 pizzas(for only 4 people!) a day, all at the price you have stated....

How long will it be before you go bust??? or will you try to reduce the quality of pizzas, limit the number of pizzas per day, say your offer only applies to very basic pizzas (so the 'normal' customer does not complain about the quality, or just stays away..)

But... 'stealing **TV** shows' ??? (you do mean the ones that normally arrive through aerial/dish/cable I hope...) how long is it, since you have seen a *new* one that has not had bits chopped out, ads put in, various words blanked, unless it is encrypted(and even this can be fixed..) to stop you recording it??

most just wait a few more months, and get the DVD...

As for freeview signal quality... the real trial will be 14 nov, when ALL the channels switch off, and the signal power can be greatly increased - I guess they have just swiched over one, to make sure anything bad happens to only one channel!! :)

The people I blame for the current state of retail, is the **utter skinflints** in this country!! They refuse to pay a good price for a very high quality piece of kit, and then they expect to play their *total crap quality* downloaded movies on it!!! - this is the main reason a lot of companies only release them in europe, where people understand that you have to pay good money not *just* for good kit, but also to support the industry, so they can continue to do so...

And of course all this strain on the UK industry to produce cheap stuff means that the quality goes down, giving the skinflints that caused it more reason to grumble...

the next effect of reducing prices is the death of the rental industry, and also of the small repair shop - people just buy a new one, instead of getting it repaired.. I am a technician, so I understand the problem with these plasma screens - all the electronics inside is virtually 'failproof' - it is the high-voltage powersupply and screen that usually go, and as these make up 90% of the price, basically 'unrepairable'... LCD uses a much better low voltage, so are much better... Myself, I am hanging onto my CRT, supporting my repairshop when it goes wrong, until at least 2012 when there will most likely be *even* better TV screens out!!

So again, I would say it is the skinflints killing the business... those who just download their tv, and dont even bother that the quality is worse than that got through RF, or even VCR.. yes, it maybe 'sharp', but the colours are washed out, the dark scenes non-existant, the fast scenes a jumpy mess...

On to connectors... If you TV still has only an aerial input, then how *cheap* are you??? - and pensioners have an excuse!

I think analogue connectors WILL appear on newer tvs, due to customer demand... and if you dont demand it, you deserve what you get!!!

I remind you of the launch of SKY HD.. they did not have anything other than HDMI, and the *only* monitor to support it.... that did not work!! :D :D I dont remember the outcome, except that HD boxes DO now have non-digital outputs...

So when you are looking for a new TV, make sure you do your research... Do you know that most 'HD-ready' TVs will only do upto 720 lines?? yes, they do say 1080, but the screen specs say 1024 x 768... you see the problem?

It is only people demanding ways to connect their consoles, and the connectors they want, that will get them... if you are mad about TRUE HD, you will need to PAY!

Meanwhile 'component HD' is still a good competitor for HDMI...
