First, servers were deep-fried... now, engineers bring you wet ones

Jaap stoel

I think it was something similar...

At an IT fair last year I came across a stand with a fire extinguishing system for server rooms which boasted a 'liquid gas' made by 3M. I dunked my phone in as well, it came out cleaner and 100% functional.

Which was kinda too bad. The vendor there promised me a new Iphone if my cell ( 2 year old HTC hero ) died after being immersed.

Jaap stoel

Is there a reason to?

I'm wondering what the reason might be for MS to decide to keep access to the SDK restricted.

Re: What about...

Well there is a big diffrence between a movie screening and a blessing or a curse.

First of you clearly know what you're buying. A moviegoing experience that will last a certain amount of time. The exact content of the film probably isn't known but that is a part of the agreement.

With a blessing/curse you're not buying the service of someone changting for X minutes and burning Y sticks of incense. You'd buy an actual curse or blessing. A negative or beneficial force acting against or in someone's interest.

Now with a movie you can clearly say in the end 'Yep, I saw a movie'. You can like it or dislike it but it's clear you got what you bought.

But after the chanting is done. How do you know this curse/blessing worked? ( Well you ought to know you threw away your money because magic is just bunk. )

There's no way to measure it, no way to say 'yep that bastard's cursed' and making it stick.

No evidence behind it, just a sudden rise in violence and of course all those whackos must be influence by video games.

Plus the amount of energy you need in order to accellerate to such speeds. You'd need loads and loads of ReMass and as you get closer to C the amount of energy to accellerate increases exponentionally.

Not to mention that you'll have to carry twice the amount of mass because you need to slow down as well.

Replace work with 'cost effective'

If I want to get from Europe to the UK I could swim the channel. That 'works' but its a lot more effective to take a ferry or plane.

What the author's saying is that these windmills are not generating enough power to be cost effective and its most likely that they never will. But still there's tons of money subsidizing them.

While other experimental technologies (and I use the term loosely) are not eligible for subsidies while they do look like they could become self-sustaining and thus economically viable.

Fukushima fearmongers are stealing our Jetsons future

Jaap stoel

Lets divide the work

So 15 people died... Big whoop.

Compared to those 15 about tens of thousands of people died to produce the same amount of energy from coal. And hundreds more died for the same amount of energy from oil.

I agree that every death is a tragedy. But looking at the bigger picture I'd say those 15 people are a much better deal compared to the amount of deaths caused by oil and coal plants.

In other words. I'd rather talk to 30 grieving parents (assuming each dead person has 2) then to the hundreds or thousands I'd have to talk to if I had to console every household who had lost someone to working in power production from oil or coal.

Just try to put things in perspective.

Dutch courts: Wi-Fi 'hacking' is not a crime

Jaap stoel

Freeloading: yes!

Its gonna be very difficult to sue someone for stealing your bandwith. Because last year a judge ruled against bandwith theft because bandwith wasn't a 'product' so to say. So someone would have to prove that he has suffered damage because of the stolen wifi/bandwith.

Facebook reviews smut policy after slave site uprising

Jaap stoel

That's one side

The other is, facebook offers an infrastructure that offers a lot of quick and easy exposure and an easy way to get a lot of people connected to your site's news updates and such.

And its still a lot easier to make a facebook page instead of installing and configuring your own forum software.

Samsung TV app competition - no winners here

Jaap stoel
Thumb Down

Well DUH!

The TV remote offers a clunky and user unfriendly interface. And todays consoles can do the same thing and more with greater ease and flexibility. Want more? Every TV nowadays has a VGA and HDMI port. Both can be used to hook up PC's to a telly.

Pirate

An end to piracy?

I guess it won't take long for organizations such as the MPAA and the RIAA to start bribing ISP's in to slowing or blocking pirated bittorrent and newsgroup traffic. Its probably a lot cheaper then actually finding and effectively charging the culprits.

Security guard admits he hacked hospital PCs

Jaap stoel

It can be murder or manslaughter

Disabling the HVAC system in a hospital can lead to patients dying from heatstroke.

HVAC systems also help to keep operating rooms sterile so losing the system could lead to infections.
