Re: 992 times

Read the sub-headline and you'll see it says "And that's just the times they were caught..." which I think answers your question...

Alan 6

Re: Even though I disliked Boy Wonder...

To be fair, I think the reason that the article mentioned they're not open to the public is because the planning application emphasises the woodlands and restaurants in the plea for locals' approval.

Alan 6

Not bad value

$995 to get your ashes ejected into the upper atmosphere.

We had to pay the local council £600 to take out a single scoop of earth for my mum's ashes. £600 for a 12" square plot!!!!!

@sabroni

Civil Partnerships are different to marriages in one very important respect in the UK.

With a marriage you get automatic inheritance rights, this is not the case with a Civil Partnership. This means in a civil partnership you are less likely to be murdered by your spouse

Re: Sony and digital photography

Sony have made point & shoot cameras for a while, but they bought Minolta in 2005 I think, and from then on started to move into the DSLR market.

A huge number of cameras use Sony sensors (the iPhone 3s for instance, I think there's one in the iPhone 4 as well) and have done for years , and most CCTV cameras use them. So they know a lot about the most important part of the camera body.

Where they fall down is lenses, but this is where Minolta come in, but you don't need to use Sony optics, you can buy Tamron, Sigma and many other brands of lenses with Sony A mounts

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp - Sony lens database

Alan 6

For the "It's only a compact" guys

Yes, it's a compact, but the picture quality is right up there with the bulk of the prosumer DSLRs because it uses the same size sensor.

Also, the vast majority of people don't want the complexity & bulk of a DSLR, but they do want something that takes decent photos.

If you don't think they'll catch on read these two pages from a Guy who normally uses a Nikon D800 (with a 36mp full frame sensor)

There's a huge amount of snobbishness surrounding Sony cameras.

I have a Sony SLT-A35 and it blows my previous Lumix out of the water, and pisses on my brother's Canon 110D for image quality.

So, Sony aren't a traditional camera company with a long standing history of film camera manufacturer, but Minolta were a traditional camera company with a long standing history of film camera manufacture, and underneath the Sony housing beats the heart of a Minolta...

Alan 6

Re: APS-C

Putting a full frame sensor in the camera would mean bigger body and bigger heavier lenses.

The camera is compact, so requires a compact sensor, albeit one that is much bigger than the 2/3" sensors in most point & shoot and bridge cameras

Alan 6

Re: Wouldn't touch those ISPs anyway.

Some of us are not fortunate enough to live somewhere you have a choice over ISP.

Where I live the only ISPs that can give me more than 2mbps are Talk Talk, Tiscali & AOL - ohh guess what, they're all Talk Talk, which is a bugger, as I need a good speed to work from home, and so Talk Talk is my only option

Alan 6

Have you seen the quality of most CCTV footage?

In a foolish attempt to fit as many cameras as possible into as little hard drive space as possible most systems record in CIF resolution (352 x 288) and use quite aggressive MPEG4 compression.

Most people look like they're made of lego...

Alan 6

metal knife??

If you're going to spend the best part of three figures for a kitchen knife it really should be ceramic.

May I suggest you look at Kyocera FK series knives

http://www.kyoceraknives.co.uk/fk-series-carbon-infused-ceramic-blades/kyocera-fk-series-carbon-infused-blade-cooks-knife-14cm

And for those that want to know where the IT angle is, Kyocera also make damn fine printers

Alan 6

@Blitterbug

The US still use imperial measures, and even worse, their pint is 16 fluid ounces instead of the rest of the world's 20 fluid ounces, so a gallon of "gas" is 6.4 UK pints rather than 8 UK pints, which makes comparing the prices of fuel in the US & UK rather more complicated than most people realise

Alan 6

Re: Just watched the youtube of the comments

"not for some fairly tame idiotic comments from a young man who was drunk and thought for some ridiculous reason that since it's only Twitter he can say what he likes."

Being drunk should not be a defence for any crime.

Far too many people assume that they should not be held responsible for their actions just because they were having a good time.

Sorry to come over all Daily Mail, but some people really do make me think we should have to apply for a licence to breed...

Alan 6

Don't 00's use Sony phones? (ahh yes, they use whatever the product placement guy tells them to use...)

Alan 6

Re: More like 60 per hour.

???

Assuming she was awake 24/7 that's approx one text every 2 minutes - when de she find time to eat?

I hope she has an unlimited text tariff

Alan 6

The title is too long

You may think I'm making this title up, so I'll put an IMDb link in here as well.

The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies

Directed by serial offender Ray Dennis Steckler, it's one of those films that could have been in the "so bad it's good" category, but it stays firmly in the bad camp

http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0057181/combined

Alan 6

@mraak

You may not have to be rich, but I'd say at least 80% of the population couldn't spare the sort of cash needed to fund an Apple addiction...

Alan 6

Why is it that when prices are "harmonised" the UK always seems to lose out?

Alan 6

Fairly sure that the average US citizen has no idea Italy is a foreign land, they probably think it's one of the smaller boroughs of New York...

Alan 6
Devil

"So long Sony, you make Stalin look like a saint."

I'm fairly sure Sony have so far failed to kill 20 million people, so on balance, they don't make Stalin look like a saint.

Alan 6

@theodore

No idea if it's raining.

The film is Japanese, but was made by a French company, and there's several spellings of the title, it is sometimes referred to by the closest English translation "In The Realm Of The Senses".

It's probably the strongest non-pron film ever made, although Shortbus probably comes close...

Alan 6

Ai no korîda

It's a major plot element of this film

http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0074102/combined

Michael Hutchence was a big fan as well...

Alan 6

That'll teach them not to source their images from Google rather than the manufacturer's website

Alan 6

The current £50 DVD boxed set is remastered, the films look really good, although On Her Majesty's Secret Service has an error so when you pop the disk in it goes straight to mid-way through one of the features rather than firing up the menu.

I would imagine this would be fixed for the Blu-Ray release...

Alan 6

I got that set for Christmas - Since new year I've watched a film a day in order - I'm not looking forward to the 14th Jan when I have to watch A View To A Kill...

Alan 6

Travesty

No Bond box set will ever include that rip-off remake of Thunderball. Only the EON production's films are included in the sets
Alan 6

Ever heard of e-ink?

My Swiss Army Knife has a little LED lamp on it (so I can see who I'm stabbing with the 2" blade I suppose), this has a tiny battery, just like you find in those new fangled quartz watches.

Combine the e-ink that only uses power during a refresh, and a lithium cell and your display would work for ever.

Alan 6

I've got a 32gb USB stick, this holds way more than I need to carry from place to place, not sure why anyone would want to place 1tb of data onto a device that could fall through a hole in your pocket...

Alan 6

I've just had to pay £35 for a Toshiba recovery CD.

I did get one with the laptop, but I've moved house three times since buying it, so it's been lost.

£35 stuck me as a lot of money, but seeing as the only alternative is paying £80+ for an OEM copy of Windows they've got me over a barrel.

This is the only expense I've had with the laptop since I bought it 5 years ago, and the first time I've done a system restore, so that's not bad really...

Alan 6

I really like my Dell Mini, it's really useful for surfing on the sofa, and the battery lasts about three hours.

It's small and sturdy enough to drop in my rucksack and use as a back up for my camera SD card when I'm travelling. And it fits on the little tables on a Virgin Pendalino

Alan 6

??

"After all they still rip you off for the e-books, why should you have to pay up from for the priviledge!"

Most Kindle books are well below the paper cost, and they have at least one deal a day @ 99p.

This of course is not the same for ePub books for the Sony readers, which are often the same price or slightly dearer that the paperback equivalents

Alan 6

I've been working full time since 1988, and the only time my employer sprung for Christmas lunch for the staff I was working for a company owned, run, and staffed almost entirely by Muslims, WASPs were definitely in the minority there but we got a full Turkey & trimmings Christmas lunch on the last day before the Christmas break.

Alan 6

Nope, the right to bear arms is merely permission to roll your sleeves up, the merkins have never been good at spelling

Alan 6
Holmes

They were at a bomb disposal range, as stated in the article.

Alan 6

Is the CPU in the picture to scale? If so there's not a lot of room left inside for the rest of the bits.

By the way, do you take the tablet after the Ainol to ease the pain? If so, I've got a mate who'll sell you some Boy Butter that does wonders for that sort of activity...

Alan 6

I think that's the printer used to churn out Dan Brown's books...

Alan 6

Noise

It's all well & good listing the running costs for the printers, but of equal importance for a small office is noise.

I've found that many colour laser printers can be incredibly noisy, especially the carousel models that rotate the toner cartridges between passes.

Any chance of adding a noise level next time you review printers?

Alan 6

Another reason why iTunes is coming off my PC the minute my Cowon S9 arrives...

Alan 6

There's a woman in Rochdale with these two number plates

P 130OBS

P3 13OOB

All I can say after seeing the woman is "Mutton dressed as lamb"

Alan 6

I've always thought that these studies are looking at the results the wrong way.

It's not that drinking a pint or beer or glass of wine a day are beneficial to your health, it's just that people who drink moderately are more relaxed in general than teetotallers, and this relaxation is reflected in their general well being.

Alan 6

I assuming they mention English pint to distinguish from a US pint, which is ~473ml rather than an Imperial pint of ~568ml

Alan 6

H2G2 reference

A bit like Grunthos the Flatulent, who's major intestine, in a desperate attempt to save life and civilisation, leapt straight up through his throat and throttled his brain, BT Tower tried to sacrifice itself to save the sanity of the nation.

As bad as smokers

Can some people not last a 2 hour flight without a 5-knuckle shuffle?

Maybe this is going to be introduced alongside a £1 charge for the bogs, and is yet another reason why I will go nowhere near a low cost airline...

Alan 6
Facepalm

*The Sunday Times said that it would truly mark the end of our days as a "Victorian superpower".*

Are they aware she died 110 years ago?

Alan 6

I thought rockets were fast

So it takes off at around 11pm on 29th October, and is expected to dock at 1:15 on November 2nd, that's a little over 75 hours (clocks go back 2am on 30th Oct) to reach an object that's around 200 miles up.

It didn't take much longer for Apollo 11 to reach the moon...

Alan 6

Bargain

Far too cheap, if you're buying an exclusive phone to lose down the toilet you may as well go to 5 figures for a Vertu or Tag Hauer Link

Alan 6

The only thing I've ever used the keyboard for on my kindle is entering the wi-fi password and the odd web address.

It's by a long chalk the best e-book reader, and that's all it is.

Alan 6

Well that's a good honest name there Grease Monkey, yes I'm called Alan, the number 6 was applied by the El Reg servers, there must be another 5 Alans in here somewhere.

Interesting how us drivers with DAB radios in our cars are all being down-voted for being honest - yes DAB in cars does work...

Alan 6
Happy

I'm not a liar, and I do travel quite a lot, about 2,000 miles a month

I drive from North of Lancaster to Manchester three times a week, 65 miles each way. The DAB signal drops a couple of times for about 30 seconds.

If I drive north then it drops more frequently, and that's the point, it drops, it doesn't go to the bubbling mud, it's either there, or it isn't.

I'm not saying this is the experience everyone will have, but it works for me.

by the way, at least I've got the guts to use a name, unlike someone who's just called me a liar

Alan 6
Happy

I've got DAB in my car too, works fine with the stubby antenna on the roof, signal doesn't degrade to bubbling mud, it just cuts out.

I live in rural North Lancashire, bordering Cumbria, and the signal is OK most of the time.

During the summer it was perfect, I could listen to TMS in crystal clear digital audio, then when I did reach somewhere the DAB signal didn't I could just drop down to 198 Long Wave.

Yes indeed, the Boost radio in the MINI has DAB and Long Wave, I suspect there's a cricket fan on the MINI design team...
