Video in a window

I know it might sound funny, but the ability to keep a video playing in a little window while I do other things is actually something that has me seriously considering the Galaxy S III as my next phone. I might be very happy with my iPhone 4, but Apple now really need to do something amazing to keep me from switching. If their next phone is another 4s they've had it, even if there are fewer games on Android.

So what's going on with the Like/Dislike buttons on YouTube?

They disappeared for me about 2 months ago to be replaced with the G+ button, but then about a month ago they came back. Are they appearing/disappearing for people at different times or am I missing the point about what's going on?

I don't think Apple will do anything...

Personally, I think Apple's answer to this will be the Gatekeeper feature in Mountain Lion. It basically lets the user select between running anything or only apps signed for the App Store.

I strongly suspect that "App Store-only" will be Apple's "default" mode and if a user chooses to leave the walled garden then Apple will take no responsibility for anything that forces its way onto users' system.

Assuming it actually does block all malware when switched on it's a clever way to side-step the problem without actually dealing with it...

I think the Megadodo Publishing Corporation has been putting pressure on them.

Frontios

Sorry Christopher, if you're reading I need to talk Doctor Who for just a second. I'd just like to say Frontios is one of my absolute favourite Doctor Who stories, the whole thing was great from start to finish.

I'd love to see the Tractators revisited in the new series, I'm sure with CGI they could do justice to them curling up into a ball like a pillbug. That said, the recent Silurian story borrowed very heavily from Frontios with people being sucked into the ground which is a bit of a shame.

Re: 4G on an iPhone? I can't wait!

Is it so hard for you to believe some people buy iPhones because they're good pieces of kit? Why do you feel the need to tar all iPhone owners as people who would buy anything with an Apple logo?

Still my favourite film ever

It's been my favourite film since I saw it on VHS back in the '80s. I'm not sure how old I was, but I definitely wasn't 18!

I'm really looking forward to Prometheus, the only thing that could get me more excited than Ridley Scott making a new Aliens film is James Cameron making a new Aliens film.

Re: hmmmm...

Yes, I spotted that bit of bullshit too. First she said: "No one is going to be looking through ordinary people's emails or Facebook posts."

But if that's the case, then how will they know to investigate or suspect someone of being a terrorist or paedo in the first place? They have to snoop in order to know!

And of course as we all know any terrorist/paedo/criminal with at least two brain cells to rub together will know to encrypt and obfuscate their communications so that they're impossible to track/read. An utter waste of tax payers money.

No Bayformers?

Surely Bay's three Transformers films count as crimes against both celluloid and humanity?

You can't call it global warming any more, they had to change the name to climate change after the warming stopped about 10 years ago.

Scars opening up!?

I've got a large scar on my arm from when I broke it once. Does this mean my dream of one day being an astronaut is knackered then?

Big Brother

Why did they go after O2?

Was this a case of picking off a smaller ISP with less legal resources so they could then move on to bigger ISPs after setting a bit of a legal precedent?

Si 1
WTF?

ARM based 360???

I'm sorry but how is an ARM CPU supposed to stand in for the 360's PowerPC based Xenon CPU? It's not going to happen is it? The instruction set is wrong and there's blatantly not going to be enough horsepower for emulation.

Reading the original rumour it's clearly a Windows on ARM powered set top box with Kinect compatibility and built-in apps like Netflix, not a slimmed down, backwards compatible Xbox 360.

Binary Domain

It's great to see Binary Domain in the list, I think it's quite the underrated gem, mixing elements of Terminator with Gears of War and a small dollop of Mass Effect character interaction. To be honest after the bad taste the Mass Effect 3 ending left in my mouth this is the game I've gone back to replay again.

Despite having very cliched seeming characters, the sci-fi story on offer actually asks some interesting questions about what it means to be human or a robot and where the line between the two is drawn...

Are you still waiting for Apple to ship yours? Me too!

While it is annoying that I get faster broadband over a Three HSPA+ dongle than I do via BT's rusty wires, I knew I what I was getting into when I moved out of a large-ish town for the countryside. Of course with Cameron's plans to concrete over the countryside I'm sure a major conurbation will be sprawling in my direction soon.

Opportunists

Looking at that graph the Android dip starts at exactly the same time that Windows Phone 7 started gaining. My guess is that these developers losing interest in Android are perhaps early opportunists looking to exploit an initially empty Android app store with clones of successful apps on iOS.

Now that the Android app store has matured and has plenty of decent apps, they're off to the fresh pastures of Windows Phone 7 where clones and simple apps once again have a chance of selling.

Happy

I'm upgrading from an iPad 1. My main reason being the lack of RAM (256MB) in the first model. While it just about copes, surfing with multiple tabs quickly becomes a problem with the device forgetting the page I've just looked at because I've switched tabs. The single core CPU is a bit slow at loading web pages too, and the upgrade to iOS 5.1 seems to have made things just a touch slower all round as well.

I'm definitely looking forward to the new screen, but a faster more stable device is also something I'm really looking forward to. I was such a sceptic when Apple announce the iPad, yet it hardly leaves my side these days!

With any luck Chris Huhne will be off to prison for lying about his speeding ticket and the government can put someone who doesn't listen to whale music in charge of building a new generation of nuclear plants. It's a pity our nuclear skills have been allowed to atrophy to the point that we need to buy in French expertise to build the new reactors.

Of course that assumes we won't have all the scaremongers spreading FUD about nuclear power...

The New iPad

If Apple's servers are struggling to process Siri requests, that would perhaps explain why the new iPad doesn't have Siri. It seemed like such an obvious feature to add, yet it doesn't have it, but if Apple are overloaded then that would explain a lot...

I completely agree

The endings are awful. I finished the game earlier today and I was utterly gobsmacked by how bad the three ending options were. It was Deus Ex Human Revolution all over again, except this time it's the end to an epic trilogy rather than a single game being spoiled.

Would it have been so hard to do a Return of the Jedi-style "Yub-Nub" ending? :(

I never played this one thanks to not owning a PC with the horsepower to run it, but it does remind me of the old DOS classic Quarantine, which helpfully had windscreen wipers for when you ran pedestrians over: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/146/Quarantine.html

I stopped reading as soon as I read Harriet Harperson's name.

Si 1

Tell me about it. What's the point of all that i7 horse power if you're going to shackle it to Intel's pathetic graphics chip. Given the thickness of the casing they should have had plenty of room to squeeze a dedicated graphics card from nVidia or AMD in there (Dell's Alienware brand has an 11" system with an i7 and a decent dedicated graphics chip).

Si 1

Re: Hmm, anyone else see a pattern?

Well it's not going to work for me. I skipped the iPad 2 because I was expecting a "retina" display and I might skip the iPad 3 if it doesn't have a quad-core CPU. Every other Android tablet is likely to have quad-core by the end of this year so Apple will have a job convincing me to upgrade my iPad 1 to iPad 3 if it's just using a souped-up dual-core to push that hi-res screen.

If Apple are responsible for these leaks about high specs they really ought to stop them as all they do is put me off the finished product because what they launch doesn't live up to the hype (I really ought to stop reading all the rumours).

Looks like something you'd see when booting into safe mode... Is MS trying to tell us something about Win8?

Si 1

I reckon it's a miscommunication, it will be an 8" device but a 7" screen (if it exists at all). Even on a smaller device you can't really have an edge-to-edge screen as you need some space around the screen for thumbs to hold the device.

Si 1

Almost exactly what I'm looking for...

This seems really close to what I want to replace my current Samsung TV/Monitor combo which is sub-HD and a little small at 21". The only real deal breakers are an absence of picture-in-picture, s-video/composite connectivity (for old games consoles) and a lack of (or only minimal) motion interpolation. The price is really good too, so I might still go for it as the passive 3D is quite tempting!

Si 1

"Crittercism has funding from Google Ventures."

So, no conflict of interest there then.

Si 1

I didn't bother with IB2 when it came out. The first had some novelty but the lack of exploration and limited gameplay eventually made it rather boring and I just didn't feel like bothering with its sequel.

I'd much rather Chair stop producing IAP cash-cows and get on with Shadow Complex 2...

YouTube Like/Dislike buttons

Has anyone noticed that the Like/Dislike buttons have vanished from YouTube? You used to be able to gives a thumbs up (or down) to videos but that seems to have been disappeared and all that's left is a Google+ button now. The thumbs are still there for the comments section at least.

I suppose we've all failed to want to join Google+ so now we're going to be made to join it. It's bad enough that every time I sign in to YouTube it tries to prize my mobile phone number off me under the pretence of it helping with security...

Google, et al are just getting way too intrusive now.

Been waiting for the iOS app for ages

I suspect Apple aren't going to approve the OnLive app. It's been stuck in approval hell for so long I think there must be a problem with it. It's probably down to OnLive wanting to sell games through the interface but not wanting to pay Apple 33% on every transaction. It will be interesting to see if OnLive re-work the app or if they just give up.

Android cases

I wonder if Apple would have objected were it not for the fact that this company also make "driPhone" cases for Android phones? I can think of a few iPhone accessories that use "i" in their name without any legal problems (e.g. iTrip), so I suspect the real issue here is the association of the "iPhone" name with Android.

Maybe Apple are concerned about iPhone becoming a generic catch-all name, like Hoover is to vacuum cleaners or Nintendo was to video-games?

@James Howat

I've just had a go on my iPad and the greying occurs when you touch the key, rather than after lifting. I wasn't able to get my iPad to miss any keys, but it was only a quick test. I've definitely noticed missed keys in the past, but that's usually when there's something installing in the background and the key doesn't grey in those situations.

I did notice that if you touch a key and then slide your finger off it, it won't count that as a key press. This makes sense as touching a control then sliding your finger off it without releasing is the standard way of telling iOS you touched that control in error and don't want to complete the action.

So it's possible this guy is sliding his finger a bit too much before lifting off a key. Ideally he needs to film with two cameras, with the second one horizontal to the screen so we can see if he's sliding or lifting his fingers when it goes wrong. In some cases it did look like he might have dragged his finger a bit when it went wrong, but from the top-down perspective it's virtually impossible to tell.

Personally, I don't like typing on my iPad if I can help it. The lack of tactile feedback just makes it much slower to use, although I personally think the auto-correction is generally very good. It seems to get better with every major new iOS update and is getting scarily good at interpreting utter nonsense words into what I actually meant to type.

The Last Guardian

Any bets on whether Sony will be able to get The Last Guardian out of the door next year? All the behind the scenes goings on suggest Sony management has had enough of waiting and are pushing for the game to be done and released even if it upsets the creators.

After Mass Effect 2, ME3 has an enormous mountain to climb to top it, but I think it's my most anticipated game next year, with Bioshock Infinite and the new Tomb Raider following closely behind.

No doubt, Ubisoft will trot out another tired Assassin's Creed game. I really, really enjoyed the first two installments but they've milked it too hard now. Annual sequels are too frequent for me, I much prefer every two years.

Next year has the potential to be one of the best years ever, but then so did this year, and I was quite underwhelmed by most of the big releases (Gears 3, Uncharted 3, Saint's Row 3, etc).

Sadly she died from cancer a few years ago. She did manage to record one last performance as the voice of the computer in JJ Abrams new Trek film though, which was a nice send off as she was the voice of the computer in just about every version of Star Trek except Enterprise (which didn't have a talking computer).

Si 1

I've been playing GTAIII on my iPhone 4 for most of today, and I'm now a few missions into the second island. So in the case of this game, I'm definitely going to try and complete it. The controls are pretty decent, so it's not like some ported games that just don't work on a touch screen. There are plenty of games on the iPhone that I can't be bothered to complete thanks to shite controls.

I'd say to only real drawback is performance gets quite laggy and slow when there's a lot going on. I'm sure the iPhone 4S is fine but my old iPhone 4 is single core so it struggles in comparison to all the dual core devices the game supports.

Si 1

Yeah starting again is usually the best option, especially if it's your own computer, but I recently had a problem like this with my aunt's PC. It had one of those anti-virus viruses that blocks all internet access except access to their site to buy their fake anti-virus product.

While I could have suggested a full re-install, she hasn't got a clue what files need backing up or where she keeps them on her computer and so I would inevitably get the blame for not backing up everything properly. Plus there's the onerous chore of waiting for her wheezing P4 to reinstall everything (assuming she can find the discs).

If MS can release something that will clean a system up to the point that I can get back on the internet and download other clean-up tools I think it will be my preferred route... because I'm lazy like that. ;)

Si 1

Had that anomaly been detected when when they launched back in 2006?

It's pretty amazing to think they launched 5 years ago and they've still got another 5 years of waiting before their probe reaches its destination. I hope it all goes well for them, as I would imagine 10 years of waiting only for the probe to go wrong like Phobos-Grunt would be devastating.

Si 1

Thank god Moffat's in charge!

Arcade racers

Personally I can't live without some arcade racers, and I find Sega Rally 3 and Daytona USA HD both fill that gap nicely. Sure they're not Gran Turismo in terms of content, but the gameplay (particularly on Daytona) is still magnificent!

Si 1

I'm playing this game at the moment, it's very good fun but I think I marginally preferred Saint's Row 2. SR3 has spread out each of the side missions, so instead of just finishing one level and continuing with the next, you have to drive to another location in the city to continue. In one sense it prevents repetitiveness but in another it just breaks up the gameplay mid-flow.

SR3 also seems to be missing some of the better side-missions from SR3, like the bodyguard missions where you had protect a celebrity from their rabid fans by throwing the fans in front of trains, into lumberjacks with chainsaws, into the blades of a helicopter, etc. Also missing so far are the sewage spraying truck and the police brutality side-missions.

Still, lots of the good stuff is still there. Cars can be very heavily customised, the custom character creator is fantastic, there's loads of silly costumes to wear and so far I've still not run out of things to do. Driving a tiger around in a car is a favourite new addition to the game.

My only really serious gripe is that it's crashed on me quite a few times now, to the point where I'm having to remember to manually save after every missions. I'm not sure if that's because my 360 is on its last legs or because the game was rushed onto the shelves. Halo Anniversary hasn't crashed on me so I'm more inclined to blame the game at the moment. Hopefully there will be a patch at some point.

Si 1

I might be jumping the gun a bit, but if the hackers got in via the forums then I think it's a bit weak of Valve to have kept their forum server so close to the rest of their infrastructure. Their forums run vBulletin, which isn't open source but it's very common, so I would imagine getting hold of the source code to look for flaws would be no problem. Or worse still, it could turn out that Valve were running an old version of the forum with known security flaws.

Either way, for such an obvious vector, it's disappointing that it was possible for the hackers to use the forum as a springboard to get at the rest of their infrastructure, when really it should have been firewalled off on its own subnet and kept fully separate from servers hosting banking and personal information.

Si 1

Odd features to focus on

I have to admit I've never seen the appeal of text reflow, all it seems to do is make text wobble and jitter about the screen while I'm trying to zoom in on it.

Also, I'm not sure I see the point of Smart Dial. Surely it's quicker to jump to a name in your contacts than trying to remember their number and typing several digits? Or am I missing something about it?

Si 1

How many years now have bendable/foldable displays been imminent?

Companies have been promising these sorts of screens for years now, so it's hard not to be a but jaded about yet another claim they're nearly here. Still, very cool if it's true.

Si 1

Indeed, my first thought when reading the article was that it wasn't a strictly fair comparison as one was a brand new disruptive device, while the other was a version update of an existing product.

It's like comparing the launch of the iPod Photo (remember that model anyone?) with the launch of the Sony Playstation.

Si 1

I think the problem is that Apple didn't announce the 4S earlier in the year like they did with all the previous iPhone announcements. This led to the expectation that something special or game changing could be in the offing, because Apple were taking longer than usual. IOS 4 and the iPhone 4 were announced to be made for each other, so it was fairly natural to assume iOS 5 would result in an iPhone 5. Let's not forget also that the iPad had a facelift after just one iteration.

I think the expectation was there for something that looked new, not just something that is apparently all-new on the inside, so the disappointment was understandable, especially since Apple made no move to try and quell expectations of new form factors and wider touch sensitive home buttons.

I recall being disappointed when the iPad 2 failed to have the rumoured retina display (and I'll be even more disappointed if the iPad 3 doesn't have it)!

Si 1

Ridge Racer Accelerated

Personally, my favourite iPhone racer is Ridge Racer Accelerated. It was pretty crappy when Namco first released it (I had an iPhone 3G back then and the hardware just couldn't handle the game and the controls were terrible). Since then Namco have added much better control options and added retina support, making it great fun to play (assuming you have a 3GS or better with the grunt to run it).
