Windows 8.1

My 2 cents worth (talking from a desktop perspective, not tablet):

Windows 8.1 is a good OS. It is stable, integrates well in active directory, runs just about any programs that was running on Vista and 7. The biggest issue by far is the modern UI. It does not make sense when the OS is used on a desktop or laptop for that matter.

If MS decided to listen to the customers and managed to detect the hardware platform and docking status to present either the classic desktop with a real start menu if no touch screen is available, if it is a desktop chassis, if it is docked or the modern UI if it is tablet chassis and it is not docked, the OS would be much more accepted.

We are about to roll-out windows 8.1 in the corporate environment. Classic Shell is our savior. From a user perspective, with classic shell loaded, it is like using XP or 7 (close enough), no re-training needed.

As a tablet, I am not a fan. Android and IOS are far friendlier to use, but they don't run our corporate apps...

Because if MS can manage to release the device at that price it will bring the price of every other device down.

It would also show how Apple has been overpricing their devices. Of course there will be the law suits because bundling hardware and OS will deemed unfair. The lawyers are already spending their Christmas bonuses....

What a load of

Who in their right mind would purchase virtualisation software and/or windows OS just for the purpose of lodging a tax return? Can you deduct your time to install the software at IT rates? If the ATO really wants you to lodge on-line, it should provide software that runs on multiple OS.

Outside the US and Canada

I just hope that this will be available to the entire world, not just the U$ and Canada like it was the case for discounted pre-sale W7.... And for those who don't like Metro UI, don't upgrade, very simple.

Low specs!!!

Why bother with an atom processor? If one wants to have a low power tablet, get an ARM... If you want to run x86/64 then get a i5/i7 or a AMD APU. 2GB RAM, including graphics?? What is wrong with 4GB? Better resolution is also needed. Could also have larger SSD.

The duo format is not the way to go, the tablet has to be removable, ASUS transformer style.

Dell does not seem to have learned anything from the failures that Latitude ST and Inspiron Duo are.....

Dell tablets are not too far away. In the style of Asus transformer hopefully. Windows 8 either in x86 or arm. Bring it on

The most complicated

The most challenging and complex process in upgrading to win 7 was to find out what licence was needed. Too many editions, too many different options for different countries. Lets hope MS has this sorted as well.

Yes but

Please, consider that the current version of office is 2010, not 2007. The ribbon in office 2007 was so bad it was significantly and for the better in the later version. So if you have to have a ribbon, base it on 2010. With screens getting wider, the realestate is on the horizontal plan. Putting fat ribbons at the top does not make sense anymore.

Shame

The streak 5" has been my"phone" for a while. Like most who like the streak 5 I don't use the phone much, but it is a nice add on to a good size tablet. I understand it is not for all. it will be a pain to have to carry 2 devices to achieve the same.

Too easy

Facebook has yet again made it too easy for phones to sync contact info to the site. All info sharing should be off by default and then it should be made difficult to enable. Once enabled it should warn before the first few syncs. And removing sync and info should be made superb easy.

Is it genius or madness?

Then difference between genius and madness is success. Is it possible that M$Okia are seeing something that is missing? A mobile OS that integrates with corporate systems running on good quality devices? After all that is how blackberry made a squillion back in the old days when emails to mobile was the ultimate integration.

If your os was a car

It would be doing 500 kph and consume 2 litres per 100 kms. Sure it would need restarting once in a while. Ask per bagging M$ for software that need patching. Show me a os that doesn't.

How much cheaper

would smart phones and tablets be if CrApple stopped sewing Samsung who stopped sewing M$ who stopped sewing HTC who stopped sewing CrApple.... Hardware $20, legal fees $600.

VMware is paving the way

for hyper-v. M$ must be pinching themselves. Hyper-v may not be as good yet, but of VMware becomes money hungry, M$ could catch up.

Simple maths

Oz gvt will give back 50% of the tax to ordinary Aussies. Since there is no way businesses will absorb the other half, it leaves the compensation around 50% short.

So cut the political crap and just admit it will cost us to clean the air.

of processing power. It is useless, but if Apple sells it, it will be a hit.

Let us hope that AMD will produce a great processor and give intel a kick up the butt. If the processor is good enough, it will become popular.

Had a vision. Yes he did. Today we have standards. Files can be shared between different systems. if it had been to Apple or IBM, we would be buggered for sure.

The price to pay for brand name. Really it is like paying Louis Vuitton price for a suitcase or Dior for a perfume... Some just have too much money.

Is over stepping again. There are many valid reasons why corporate pcs are locked and if google wants to gain ground in the corporate environment, it should look at ways to better fit in, not ways to bypass controls. The site is now on my black list.

Microsoft is expected...

To remove malicious software. It releases an update for this purpose every month. Having said this, the corporate line for many organisations, IT or not, is denial of issues to start with, then comes the real solutions. Apple, Telstra, M$, Governments all do it.

And to celebrate twenty five years, I finally removed the dual boot from my laptop and run 100% Linux. Long live windows, still one of the best around.

Please, take as long as you want. Make 7 last as long as xp. 7 is a very good os, and with 6+ years support and sp's, I willow be very happy.

The Authorities
