In Vodafone Access Gateway 3G

"Does it mean that if this femto cell is installed in the place with existing macro coverage, unregistered handsets are actually worse off, because the femto will wipe out the weak signal from the macro cell and the handset will be left cold in the waters?"
This is a distinct possibility if the femtos are not located ideally, the link below outlines the potential femto 'dead zone' for example :-

In T-Orange: It is possible to have too much spectrum

>>Running down the dial to 1800MHz, Orange and T-Mobile each have 60MHz of spectrum >>around here, which carries their 2G services. Combining those holdings gives 120MHz of >>spectrum, which is certainly more than the company will need.
Presumably this spectrum can currently only be used for GSM1800; and is effectively paired - a 30 MHz chunk from each operator in the downlink band ( 1805 -1880 MHz) and a 30 MHz chunk each in the uplink band ( 1710 -1785 MHz)

In T-Mobile picks Orange for merger
These mergers tend to be good for nobody, with the possible exception of the shareholders.
anyway:-
Voda and 02 do have a small slcie of GSM1800 spectrum to play with, 5 MHz each IIRC.
A monumental integration nightmare at all levels.

In Nokia 'actively looking' at own netbook
>> "The Nokia N810 already looks a lot more attractive than most netbooks (the Eee-clone
family), with a screen that's just fractionally smaller, but one third of the weight, and hugely more portable."
mmm .. a typcial netbook has an 8.9" screen , the N810 is 4.13" - that's hardly 'fractionally smaller' unless you work in marketing. Agree with your other points though.

In Digital Vision GiGo DV-DTR1 USB PVR
To be something like 'granny proof' I think this device needs an RF modulator rather than just passthru - no mention of this in the review eitehr way I can see.
I doubt if you can digitise VHS via the RF IN as I can't see any mention of any analogue RF input capability - just analogue output to VHS via composite video like any other PVR box.
Seems like an interesting idea, I'm surprised by the lack of record to USB or SDHC devcies on the market, I find my old Sandisk V-mate handy for this now and agian, but that's hardly 'granny proof'

In Dell accidentally sells 140,000 monitors for $15 a pop
>>in the UK actually they do have to accept whatever price they have put onto the item i think it comes under the fair trade act, one prime example i got a sandwich that is normally £3.50 for 95p because the person labelling them had put the wrong price on and the shop had to change 95p.
It isn't that simple in the UK, the price marked is merely an ' invitiation to treat' ; the price is not legally binding on either side until a contract exists, generally at the point when money changes hands. Thats's why most internet shops have something in their T&Cs along the lines of ' a contract does not exist between us until the item is shipped' or similar, maximising their time window to spot cock-ups.
Anyway, 4 years ago I bought a decent Dell desktop system with 19" (4:3) monitor for 350 quid, at least 200 quid below the going rate at the time, last week they had some high spec desktop units for 350 quid, allegedly underpriced by 150 quid.

In Rogue Atlantis knob removed by hand

>>Americans cars are now BETTER than the average European car, by being equal quality for the same price but in a size large enough you can actually fit more than two midgets inside.
Not according to JD Power, although I guess it's tricky to define 'better' versus price from this data :-

Agree about the size thing though.

In US senators demand boycott of Iran 'snoop' firms

Not really 'entirely separate' - wholly owned by Nokia and Siemens between them IIRC, NSN financials are reported via Nokia.

In Vodafone offers customers chance to pay for own infrastructure
>>one for my travel bag (VPN back to the UK so no GeoIP problems)
Existing femtocells in the USA use GPS to keep track of the femtocell's location, not sure if this is implemented in the Vodafone gear. What happens if you 'accidentally' remove the GPS antenna I don't know...

In Vodafone offers customers chance to pay for own infrastructure
I'm pretty sure this femtocell was described as 3G not GSM at the conference yesterday.
A main aim of the product seems to be to provide fast enough 3G download capacity indoors for video streaming to the phone, not just voice. Hence the issue of using the ISP's backhaul for cellular traffic does rear its ugly head. BT's director of devices, mobility and innovation gave a presentation a couple of hours after the Vodafone announcement and commented along the lines of " that's something we'd want to talk to them about" presumably referring to the prospect of cellcos using BT's backhaul for free.
In terms of 'why not just use WiFi' then the issue is that only 10% of phones shipped last year include WiFi, so it isn't that mainstream yet - plus the already mentioned issues with battery life, setup etc.
