Facebook and Robotics

This sounds a bit like Facebook attempting to get ahead of the curve and mimicking Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror episode "Be Right Back". It wouldn't be a surprise if they decided to offer personalities in robots for times when Mum or Dad is away, for example, temporarily or otherwise.

Citizen Lab says Sandvine network gear aids government spyware

Petey
WTF?

There is a MASSIVE difference with the use described in the article versus the UK ISPs telling you that a site is blocked. The difference is that the UK is being transparent and you are not being duped into viewing something that you had not requested. In fact, it is out in the open that they were going to hijack your request as it was mandated by court orders which are in the public domain. You EXPECT this redirect to happen.

Having malware injected into a legitimate request isn't remotely comparable to your example. It's a nefarious, underhand and downright unethical practise.

The uni aren't "jumping up and down" about the UK because those activities are not unethical.

Sky snaps up Virgin TV channels

Petey
Pint

No, you're not

The deal is for nine years and is at no extra cost to Virgin Media viewers. The shareholders will only benefit if customer churn stays the same or decreases and the decision was made that VM customers will NOT be charged more for HD.

Petey
Pint

Read the press release!

This does not affect UKTV channels, which are the ones owned in equal parts by BBC and Virgin Media. This is for VMTV channels only, which were wholly owned by Virgin Media. Sky won't be working closely with VM once the deal is complete.

iTunes?

I cannot BELIEVE you've put that on the top ten list of free stuff. Nothing associated with iTunes is remotely free. Sometimes spending €30 on a lifetime licence of a high-class music manager like Mediamonkey is FAR more beneficial than paying homage to Jobs. Free my arse.

You would never stop taking the bus just because an idiot smashes the bus shelter. You HAVE to get your windscreen replaced.

Telco, Broadband, TV et al are items that DO give you choice. If it doesn't work, you can move on.

If this was a scam then I would guess that you would be the only one senseless enough to undertake it.

I hope you run your own business and use your own tactics because your cynical assumptions would run it into the ground pretty darn quickly.

Try and use some logic before spouting this garbage.

BBC iPlayer rejects open source plugins, takes Flash-only path

Petey
Paris Hilton

I use Boxee too BUT (big but)...

... I know a lot of people who are ditching their TV and TV service entirely in favour of netTV. In the UK this means you don't need a TV license.

BBC iPlayer is specifically for UK TV licence subscribers as the content held therein is not even available in the Republic of Ireland, yet BBC has always been broadcast there.

DRM etc is a load of shit but I can see why they would want to do this. I don't agree with it.

p.s. Boxee ROCKS. And yes, this will apply to Boxee as well.

Paris, because she lets the whole world see her Flash for free.

Oracle sues support firm over 'massive theft'

Petey
Black Helicopters

Hmm - not sure on that one

Maybe Rimini are the REASON metalink was so bloody slow! It has improved somewhat since classic metalink has retired. Again, just my opinion!

I back Oracle on this one (not an employee) but I can see how Rimini have managed to garner a share of the market as Oracle Support is sometimes appallingly unreactive. Personally, I have got a ton of support and development guides on an external HDD just because I can't be arsed to keep logging in and searching for them!

Will be keeping a beady eye on this if I can. It might set a precedent!

Ubuntu Firefox shuns Google for Yahoo! search

Petey
Gates Horns

Hardly affecting the commercial side

The Linux kernel is fairly bloated anyway because of the support for virtually everything on the market, no pun intended.

Given that Ubuntu is essentially Debian for those who aren't comfortable with complete root access, 99% of users won't be aware that there is hypervisor support nor does it act as an active revenue stream for Microsoft.

The branding involved when Yahoo is the default search IS a revenue source.

That's what I do not agree with.

Petey
Paris Hilton

Thanks Microsoft

... for persuading me to dump ubuntu and go back to my Debian roots instead.

I don't want Microsoft NEAR my distro.

Paris because she wants everyone to stick a Yahoo! in her box too.

Shallow-minded

I (to some extent) agree with all of you who say "you must have something to hide" when it comes to denouncing TOTAL privacy.

However, TOR is used in China to circumvent the Great (fire)Wall of China so that free-thinking citizens can have free speech and access to sites which apparently are "violating public morality and harming the physical and mental health of youth". (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/24/tibet_china_youtube_ban/)

IMO, all of you who discourage this kind of activity and the development of systems such as TOR are no better than the commie dictating tosspots over in China.

Anyone who thinks that privacy is not inherent as a basic human right should walk around wearing cling-film, have no password on your email and leave your front doors unlocked with an "Open All Hours" sign hanging on it.

The pope and all his fellow plebs should be more worried about films like Angels and Demons which suggest that members of the Vatican close to the pope are corrupt and sick.

I totally agree - the instant search functionality makes it a breeze to find what you want. However, labels are still useful in some cases for me - like Jokes, Internet Accounts (ever had to change all your passwords and not remember what accounts you held?!), e-bills, e-statements to name but a few.

However, @DJ 2? You just don't get gmail my friend, you definitely should use outlook! ;-)

Paris, because it would be so good to drag her labels off whenever I want...
