After 10+ years as a member of a local Aquarium/ocean research institution and always reading their emails about upcoming events and the latest happenings I was floored when I got a "we notice you haven't been opening your emails" a few months back. Searching for Skylab: Even the most casual astro-nerd will revel in this respectful elegy to unsung space history

TimeMaster T
Unhappy

NASA could have saved it.

NASA had a booster module in development that would have raised Skylabs orbit and kept it there for years. It was supposed to be launched on a Titan II launch body, it would have attached to Skylab's docking ring and not have needed anyone to actually be there to install it. But the atmospheric drag on the station increased faster than expected, the booster module got stalled by the funding committee for various political reasons so nothing got done and the first real space station ever put in orbit was lost.

I still remember going out one night a few weeks before the station burned up and watching it pass over head, a faint point of light moving slowly across the sky. Looking back on that night and knowing what I know now about why the station was allowed to fall and the way the station has been ignored and forgotten* I get a little ticked off, it was such a wasted opportunity for the space program.

* seen several timeline of the events and milestones of Human spaceflight, they mentioned everything but Skylab. Given how extensive they were I find it hard to believe the omissions were an accident.

Re: It always pays to carry a Micro-Uzi in a shoulder holster

I don't own a gun because I want to overthrow a corrupt government. I own a gun so I can protect my family and myself when someone else tries to overthrow the government, or any other time the rule of law fails.

I live in an area that gets the occasional BIG natural disaster, the sort that takes out utilities for extended periods of time. I have supplies set aside for such times so my family and I are OK for a up to 2 weeks in a worst case scenario. Those supplies also include a gun and ammo, so that when, not if, someone else who could not/did not set aside supplies comes looking for my supplies, and anything else of value that catches their eye, I will be able to ensure that my family is safe. I know from experience that most of the time looters will simply move on to easier pickings when they see that you are armed, even if they are armed themselves.

TimeMaster T
Meh

Re: It always pays to carry a Micro-Uzi in a shoulder holster

"It never pays to carry a gun."

I have to disagree.

Over the years I have been in two situations where carrying a gun saved my life, or at least kept me from being seriously injured. In both cases I did not have to draw my weapon, once it became known I was armed the threat to my safety ended.

Guns are tools, just like a car, if you are careless or don't know how to use them properly they will end up injuring or killing someone.

What does need to be addressed however is the sub culture that considers the use of deadly force to be an acceptable first response to any disagreement or conflict. Social programs that reduce poverty, improve education and provide job opportunities do more to reduce violent crime overall than gun control laws.

'Repeal hate crime laws for free speech' petition passes 14k signatures

TimeMaster T
Megaphone

My view

You should be able to get up on a soap box on any street corner and start speaking your views, even if you say that Gay's should be stoned, Jews should be gassed, US President Trump should be impeached and local zoning laws should be changed to allow a brothel next to the church. The only restrictions on public speech should be in regard to interference with local business/private dwellings, bothering people in their homes or other non-public spaces, disturbing people late night, etc. (personally I would also like a noise ordinance to keep Public parks reasonably quite, you could still stand there in a sandwich board and speak at a normal volume). If I don't agree with the person speaking I can ignore them and walk away, or ask them to move from in front of my business/home.

"Free speech" should be about expressing you views without fear of censorship, no mater what you want to say. Putting limits and restrictions on what can be said, no mater how repugnant those opinions may be, goes against the entire concept of "Freedom of Speech".

I think it was US's "Founding Father" John Adams who said that when defending freedoms you will often have to defend those who are repugnant, because that is where the erosion of freedoms will begin. The restrictions will first be targeted at those on the fringes that no one will object to, and then it will grow. If you say nothing when they come for the Neo-Nazis eventually there won't be anyone left to speak out when they come for you.

I'm fully aware that my view on this is more than a little simplistic, idealistic, and naive to the point that it will beggar some peoples minds but it is how I see the topic. I would rather have someone venting their hate for X publicly and being ignored than them keeping silent and letting the hate fester and build until it actually harms someone.

I will now step down from my soap box. Thank you for your time and have a good day.

Re: Cheapskates?

Because they were cheap ass consultants who didn't want to spend the money on fully licensed MS software but were also to lazy to get Libre/Open Office.

I've encountered that in many small businesses I've done IT work for over the years. One time there where 4 of 5 machines running hacked Solidworks CAD software and ALL the machine (23 total) were running hacked installs of MS Office 2003. I brought this to the owners attention and he told be "I've already given MS enough more money, they aren't getting anymore from me" and my favorite line was "It's too expensive" when I brought up the Solidworks (each license was something like US$40K at the time). About a month later he had me spec out and purchase a new US$ 3500 desktop system, and he asked me if I could download a 64 bit version of Windows instead of paying for it. I was laid off fairly soon afterwards because "the network is running so well we don't think we need a full time IT guy anymore". I thought about tipping off the BSA but the boss wasn't worth it.

The moral? Even when someone can afford it they will cheat because they want to save a buck or two and don't care how they do it.

80-year-old cyclist killed in prang with Tesla Model S

TimeMaster T

I have to wonder.

If the story had been

"80-year-old cyclist killed in prang with Lamborghini Huracán"

would anyone care?

Any car, with auto-pilot or not, can hit and kill someone if the driver isn't paying attention. Even if the Tesla's autopilot was engaged and working perfectly the driver was not paying attention to the road and thus is to blame, not the car. I believe Tesla makes it quite clear that the driver should not take their attention off the road even with the AP engaged.

As a driving instructor once said "There are no 'accidents', its always because someone wasn't paying attention"

Chinese whispers: China shows off magnetic propulsion engine for ultra-silent subs, ships

TimeMaster T
Alert

MHD engines will NEVER be used for a Military "Stealth sub"

Back around the time "Hunt for Red October" came out I had co-worker who had done some contracting work for the US Navy, the sort where he couldn't say more than "I did some work for the Navy awhile back". After seeing "Red October" asked him what he thought about MHD engines and he told me that while they might find a use in civilian ships eventually they would NEVER be used in a military sub because using a HDM engine would always reveal a subs location.

A MHD engine may be silent but they have large and easy to detect magnetic signature that would reveal the location of a ship from a surprisingly large distance away. Since both "Hunter" and "Boomer" class subs rely on not being detected using something like a MHD propulsion unit would be avoided at all costs.

I can understand your viewpoint but remember that whatever freedoms you have now where more than likely secured for you by the use, of or threat of, a weapon at some point in the past.

That said the American obsession with guns is a bit disturbing, but it is not the guns at fault. One of the core issues is the culture that glorifies and promotes violence as an acceptable first response to any disagreement.

Re: Perjury

funny thing about free speech is your going to hear stuff you don't like.

As soon as you say it is alright to censor someone because you don't like the intolerant racist shit they spout then you become just like the many tyrants of history and today who would silence any speech they disagree with.

If you don't like what someone is saying don't do business or associate with them, but don't try to shut them up. Let them speak loudly and widely so everyone will know exactly what sort of person they are.

I for one would rather have the racists and other intolerant extremists saying exactly what they feel like saying. Makes it easier to know who the bigots are.

Super conspiracy mode : ON

What if the chicken wing theft was just a false flag operation to get a stingray activated in an area that contained a "person of interest" (terrorist, civil rights lawyer, environmental activist, etc.).

Sure, they could have just used a Stingray without a warrant, and risked getting anything they collected thrown out later as tainted. BUT by getting the warrant to use the device they can say the data collected against the "person of interest" was not illegally acquired since it was the result of a legal search using the Stingray device that just "happened" to pickup some other data. Sort of like a cop using a warrant to search a house for a stolen coffee maker and finding a few lines of cocaine that belong to a visiting friend on the kitchen table, sure its outside the scope of the original warrant but still admissible.

After all, they didn't catch the wing thief did they?

Re: What a criminal waste of helium

Most of the "issues" were caused by bad design choices. The Hindenburg was covered in a paint that was effectively thermit and had thousands of gallons of diesel fuel on board. All the hydrogen was burned up with in the first 90 seconds, and the hydrogen fire burned UP, it was the burning diesel fuel that fell down.

Watch the video of the Hindenburg again sometime, and remember that Hydrogen flames are nearly invisible.

TimeMaster T
Boffin

Re: What a criminal waste of helium

They could always switch to Hydrogen.

Seriously.

These are unmanned units so loss of life is not an issue, except possibly when taking off and landing. What made the Hindenburg so deadly was not the gas it used but the highly flammable paint it was coated with and all the diesel fuel it was carrying. With a properly designed gas envelope and equipment pod there is no reason it couldn't be at least as safe as what they currently use.

Most people reactions to using hydrogen are just like their reaction to nuclear energy. Hydrogen==Hindenburg!! nuclear==Fukushima!!, both cases the problem was caused by poor design choices, not the core technology itself.

Something else I just thought of. It might be possible to use condensed water from the air and some of the solar energy to keep the gas envelop topped up so the "on station time" might be extended. This is just an off the top of my head idea, I don't know what the rate of gas escape is and all the other factors that need to be accounted for but it might be something to look into.
