NASA could have saved it.

NASA had a booster module in development that would have raised Skylabs orbit and kept it there for years. It was supposed to be launched on a Titan II launch body, it would have attached to Skylab's docking ring and not have needed anyone to actually be there to install it. But the atmospheric drag on the station increased faster than expected, the booster module got stalled by the funding committee for various political reasons so nothing got done and the first real space station ever put in orbit was lost.

I still remember going out one night a few weeks before the station burned up and watching it pass over head, a faint point of light moving slowly across the sky. Looking back on that night and knowing what I know now about why the station was allowed to fall and the way the station has been ignored and forgotten* I get a little ticked off, it was such a wasted opportunity for the space program.

* seen several timeline of the events and milestones of Human spaceflight, they mentioned everything but Skylab. Given how extensive they were I find it hard to believe the omissions were an accident.

GPU's good enough for gaming but not so great at bitcoin and other non gaming applications will bring the price on high end gaming graphics cards back down to something more reasonable.

The bit miners can create a niche market for dedicated "BmPU" (Bitmining Processor Units) that I'm sure someone will seek to corner.

There has been a Succubus hanging around my place for the last couple weeks and I need to tell these guys to stay away regardless of the complaints by the neighbors.

My view

You should be able to get up on a soap box on any street corner and start speaking your views, even if you say that Gay's should be stoned, Jews should be gassed, US President Trump should be impeached and local zoning laws should be changed to allow a brothel next to the church. The only restrictions on public speech should be in regard to interference with local business/private dwellings, bothering people in their homes or other non-public spaces, disturbing people late night, etc. (personally I would also like a noise ordinance to keep Public parks reasonably quite, you could still stand there in a sandwich board and speak at a normal volume). If I don't agree with the person speaking I can ignore them and walk away, or ask them to move from in front of my business/home.

"Free speech" should be about expressing you views without fear of censorship, no mater what you want to say. Putting limits and restrictions on what can be said, no mater how repugnant those opinions may be, goes against the entire concept of "Freedom of Speech".

I think it was US's "Founding Father" John Adams who said that when defending freedoms you will often have to defend those who are repugnant, because that is where the erosion of freedoms will begin. The restrictions will first be targeted at those on the fringes that no one will object to, and then it will grow. If you say nothing when they come for the Neo-Nazis eventually there won't be anyone left to speak out when they come for you.

I'm fully aware that my view on this is more than a little simplistic, idealistic, and naive to the point that it will beggar some peoples minds but it is how I see the topic. I would rather have someone venting their hate for X publicly and being ignored than them keeping silent and letting the hate fester and build until it actually harms someone.

MHD engines will NEVER be used for a Military "Stealth sub"

Back around the time "Hunt for Red October" came out I had co-worker who had done some contracting work for the US Navy, the sort where he couldn't say more than "I did some work for the Navy awhile back". After seeing "Red October" asked him what he thought about MHD engines and he told me that while they might find a use in civilian ships eventually they would NEVER be used in a military sub because using a HDM engine would always reveal a subs location.

A MHD engine may be silent but they have large and easy to detect magnetic signature that would reveal the location of a ship from a surprisingly large distance away. Since both "Hunter" and "Boomer" class subs rely on not being detected using something like a MHD propulsion unit would be avoided at all costs.

There are some things money can't buy

While I can think of a lot of things I would do with 7 million there are also some things that I wouldn't sell for anything.

Glad to hear there are others who don't value money above everything else.

Sadly those who do value money will do whatever it takes to get it from those who have it. I wouldn't be surprised if some new city regulation or ordinance gets passed that will either force the land to be sold, or simply seized, shortly after some "contributions" to the local city government.

An "assault rifle" as legally defined is full auto and used by military and LEOs.

An "assault weapon", which is what the gunman had and has no standard legal definition, is a semi-auto civilian version of a military assault rifle.

Just being pedantic but this always ruffles me off when people mix up the two.

What if the chicken wing theft was just a false flag operation to get a stingray activated in an area that contained a "person of interest" (terrorist, civil rights lawyer, environmental activist, etc.).

Sure, they could have just used a Stingray without a warrant, and risked getting anything they collected thrown out later as tainted. BUT by getting the warrant to use the device they can say the data collected against the "person of interest" was not illegally acquired since it was the result of a legal search using the Stingray device that just "happened" to pickup some other data. Sort of like a cop using a warrant to search a house for a stolen coffee maker and finding a few lines of cocaine that belong to a visiting friend on the kitchen table, sure its outside the scope of the original warrant but still admissible.

After all, they didn't catch the wing thief did they?
