Re: Breaking up something large is PATENTED?

Long a go people used to write something known as letters on something called paper.

Often one piece of paper wouldn't suffice so you sometimes had to send multiple pieces of paper in one letter!

Re: These have their flaws, too...

I've had this on a bike too. Once I even had it in a Nissan Micra. Had to move back and forward until the sodding thing detected me!

Re: iPad?

I don't see why your comments need to be quite so offensive to be honest. Welcome to the world of forums where people have different views to you. Just because you've a preconception in your mind as to what a PC is in your mind doesn't mean it's correct. Open your mind a bit.

For reference at least one edition of the Commodore 64 had "Personal Computer" stamped on the front of it and yet it bares little resemblance to what is currently considered a PC. It definitley didn't run Windows or Linux! Nor was it very upgradable.

A smartphone is a personal computer. A home computer used by different members of a family is obviously less personal but I guess it depends on how encompassing you want to make the word 'personal'.

Many of these tablet and phone devices you can plug into large screens, attach a wireless keyboard too - and do pretty much everything a desktop machine can do...Why does form factor or the type of memory it have suddenly affect whether it's a personal computer or not?

Re: iPad?

Last time I checked PC stood for Personal Computer.

I can't think of anything much more personal than a smart phone or a Tablet. They are also undeniably computers.

Many desktop computers by comparison are not Personal Computers - simply because they are not used or owned by one person - they could be classed as workstations or some similar terminology....

Re: Resolution

Agree with JDX.

I'm currently sat in front of a 23" widescreen with the same res as this 17" laptop.

I've got 20 / 20 vision so they tell me but I have to get within 10cm of the screen in order to see those pixels!

Re: Correlation is NOT causation

"It's fine extolling the law abiding virtues of a strict dictatorship of the kind that Singapore is, but do try and get figures for lawlessness/crime from areas sharing Singapore's very high per capita GDP and median income."

Could Singapore's high capita GDP and Median income be because rather than taking drugs they're all being productive and working?

Re: It's been obvious for years that punishment does not deter;

"It's been obvious for years that punishment does not deter;

If it did, there would be no crime."

That is an absurd statement.

For all we know the amount of crime might be 4 or 5 times higher if there was no punishment.

All this proves is that it punishment does not deter everybody.

Would there be a reason to make examples out of people that were involved in the London Riots otherwise?

Mr ChriZ

Re: Too late.

To be fair he did say pays the interest.

Not pays the difference.

Imagining there was £100 difference per drive and that there were 4 drives - £400. Interest at I dunno lets say 6% is £24 a year.

Not sure what that's supposed to mean but he is technically in the right ball park!

Fridge

Knives and the Fridge for me.

Living in a shared house with a crap fridge for 4 years. As soon as I've got my own place decent Fridge is first thing that's coming my way!

As for Coffee I'm going to put it out there. I love instant Coffee. Definitely the more expensive ones not the cheap ones.. Not that much of a fan of poncey filter coffee. To be fair though that may just be because no where and no one actually makes it well in the UK. If I have to drink it I have a Latte which is often luke warm with burnt milk, rather than just luke warm with burnt coffee...

Re: Awesome little tablet

Does everything the two 7" tablets I have do. Says Samsung 5" Tablet on the receipt.

If you're going solely on the physical size side of things ....and want to call a Phablet as per Wikipedia then be my guest but.... to me it's a small tablet.....

Re: @Mr ChriZ: Please buy a clue.

I've produced a skin for a Media Application with a couple of hundred PNG files integrated into it produced primarily from Vectors. I'm quite aware each PNG file has a set resolution where as obviously a vector should scale to any size. I can see that obviously if each pixel is 1 to 1 with the screen you're guaranteed to be displaying it at it's best quality. However I'm also aware that for many years we've had the ability to stretch images over as many pixels as we want. (Otherwise we wouldn't be able to display an image on the back of a camera and on a 27" screen). Normally it doesn't produce too problems as long as you don't stretch it/zoom in to far.

As the IPad's resolution is supposedly beyond retina level then you'd think doubling the pixels like this shouldn't cause any issues - it certainly shouldn't really make it worse than displaying it on the original IPad.

I make no attempt to claim to be some genius in these matters but I believe I have a clue.

Mr ChriZ

Re: Lazy publishers, Silly subscribers

@TechBen

While I get what you're saying the surely however the image is physically not being displayed bigger - so as long as there is sufficient resolution in the PNG file no problems should be noticeable. Just the same as if you zoom in on such a graphic on any other display.

Bitmaps aren't normally targetted at certain devices they are just saved with a certain resolution.

Otherwise every website which uses PNG/JPG files to display (but obviously not render) vector type graphics would look bad on the IPad 3.

Re: Lazy publishers, Silly subscribers

Due to the way PNG Compression works I'd imagine they'd be pretty tiny PNG files.

PNG is very good at producing small files where the number of colours/shades are low whilst keeping the data lossless.

It seems to me there's two possible problems - either the original PNG's were not saved with enough detail or the IPad is rendering them badly.

PNG itself is a great format. Agree with the other chap. JPG's are much worse for this type of image.

Mr ChriZ

Nice

Been waiting for these. However I'll wait until they come down from their flood inflated price which should be nearer £130 me thinks.

I purchased a 1TB 2.5 inch drive for £53 just before the floods.

Smarter Phone

I'll carry on using my Samsung GTE-1170 Non Smart phone.

I last charged it on the 10th and it's still got about another 5 days before it runs out.

Plenty of time to find a plug socket :)

As yet however I've not managed to get a single fart app running on it.

People aren't thinking Jobsian here

If the Jesus phone tells us that the the town is now called 'Valley of the waters' as blessed by his holiness Steve Jobs - (God rest his soul until his resurrection) then the town is now called 'Valley of waters'. It is done. Amen.

Jobs says it's in the wrong place? Someone start the iDiggers(tm).

Completely ignorant question

How does this compare to the stuff the rest of us are using?

How long will it be before my mums buying a laptop computer/tablet from Currys with the power that was available in super computers of yesteryear?

Can we see a version that hasn't been completely trashed by JPG Compression?

If you were here for quality fact based peer reviewed discussion backed up with references I apologise.

My initial post had a pint next to it. It probably is the best beer in the world.

I believe I said Eco System, not MacBook Pro.

The latest Macbook pro is a VERY nice machine.

That said I'm sure it's a matter of time before the latest Macbooks are also locked into the "App $tore" and the apple money pyramid system.

They will probably then charge me if I want to write software for you, or make it available to you.

If my software does something that they decide should be for them to do and not me then they will probably scrap my software at my cost.

Apple are probably also working on a patent on the rubber matt that you use to put your coffee mug on next to your macbook and next year your car won't probably start without your IPod.

Some years ago they talked about splitting Microsoft in to Hardware and Software or similar... it never happened in part because it was too little too late. I believe Apple has reached an even bigger size and level of domination where benefits could be seen from doing the same IMO. However Apple is probably to much of a fashion accessory for anything like this to ever happen.

Mr ChriZ
Pint

hmm

Can I donate to a good cause?

I've never bought a simple apple product due to their locked in Eco System and general anticompetitive behaviour.

However I do like their hardware which sadly seems to remain untouchable and their software UI's.

I'm currently developing an android app....

Beige

To be honest the Beige looks far nicer to my eye than the grey grey grey that all other cars seem to come in at present. The plastics seem to get ever cheaper too.

The latest ford focus interior plastics looks like they came off the same production line as a power ranger kids toy.

Mr ChriZ

Nope....

I've seen the same here.

We've done a fair amount of testing on brand new Dell Latitudes.

Out the box Vista with updates is quicker to start...

However...

Give it 4 months and Vista is on it's knees if you've so much as loaded a new calculator program on it.

It takes about 6 months for 7 to get to the same point.

Why we'll all end up Windows Tablets

It suddenly dawned on me earlier why Microsoft is going to sell these things in droves.

The reason being that a significant number of us that work in the IT crowd carry hefty laptops into work. High chances are that it's probably a Windoze laptop, love em or hate them they're still very standard across a significant number of businesses. They probably have a Dell or HP logo on them.

If someone were to offer me a tablet that could replace these hefty beasts, which also doubled up as a replacement desktop computer that I could plug a standard screen, keyboard mouse into and get a standard Windows Desktop I'd bite their hand off.

As yet I've seen a few Samsung Android tablets comes close, but even then sadly I live in a Microsoft world and work with many many Microsoft based customers...

Much though I have a love/hate relationship for my HTC Android based phone I can see myself opening up a brand new Microsoft tablet box some time in the next two years..

Fun

I had one of the older Micra's before this one came out as a hire car.

It actually really surprised me by how much fun it was.

The Micra felt like a bumper car on steroids. I hope they've not lost that in this new generation.

Although new Festas, Corsa etc are very much more refined they really have lost all sense of fun to drive. The economy wasn't bad either Even that one easily achieved 50mpg, where the fords/vauxhalls achieve 40 at best.

I just wish they'd produced a more manly version! (Definitely nothing with a Reno badge on it)...

XPS

I'm currently working on a 3 year old 15" XPS.

At present I wouldn't buy another. From the day the box was opened the wifi was unreliable, within a year the CD Drive stopped working, 3 years in the screen is falling to bits.

I use the machine as a desktop replacement, and it very rarely actually moves....

Dells business kit I find quite good, but their home laptops seem to be quite bad.

What Noise

I'd happily have a Modern Wind Turbine Farm next to me. I've stood underneath one and to be honest I really can't see what the fuss is about. There is no noise! Especially once you move away from them.

I wish people moaned as much about electric lawnmower noise, or car tyre noise or some of those other things that actually make a lot of noise that is irritating in every day life....

Not convinced

I've had more than enough faulty build your own kit.

You also have just as big a problem keeping the kit inside the same as ASUS/Gigabyte and the likes always have to be using the latest and greatest so have new boards out almost continuously.

When it does go wrong figuring out which component has actually failed is a pain in the bum unless you're lucky enough to have an identical component somewhere close.

Not to mention all the problems with finding decent cooling systems that don't sound like lawnmowers etc, issues of keeping licenses across an estate..., and finding out the distributor you bought through went under 2 months ago, so your 5 years warranties are nearly impossible to follow up...

For home sure I'd build my own every time.. but for corporate stuff. The likes of Dell seem the only reliable way forward to me and way cheaper when buying bulk....

Holier than thou attitude

"Cornering at speed" does not necessarily mean breaking the law or speeding or any of the terms you're using above.

There's plenty of of corners that can be taken with reasonable speed legally and safely that with bald (or old) tires that can be dangerous.

It always amazes me whenever articles like this crop up - how many people find 1 million different ways to say "Yeah but I'm holier than thou, and you're obviously driving very unsafely" and whom probably don't spend all that many hours on the road or lie through their noses about how perfect their own driving is.

Anyhow I'm going to have to stop typing now as there's a police car catching me up.
