HDR still broken?
I wonder if they'll finally fix HDR on Windows 10, it has been broken since the creators update on nvidia graphics cards.
Not fun if you've got a media centre pc hooked up to your HDR capable tv.

It's amazing how security is always an afterthought, at almost every company I have ever worked at security is always thought of last. It's always sales making unrealistic promises and management giving unrealistic deadlines. So of course everything is rushed and damned if you dare propose sane ideas on high availability or security to dare take the focus away from features.
Hell, it's shocking how few "IT Professionals" even know what a HSM is let alone layered security.
And this new build feels like a really big step backwards from previous builds.
* The start menu has gone back to metro, you can't resize it, it isn't anywhere near as customisable as before and just feels like they've gone back to windows 8 and thought "hey, lets use that".
* They've sneaked bing into a few more places and it feels more awkward, the fact you can't change it to google makes it all the more a frustrating experience.
* Onedrive is really being pushed down your throat. "Don't like it, tough.. you can't disable it anymore without hacking it up"
* They are pushing the metro stuff a lot more in this release, a lot of apps that you could uninstall before you cannot now.
Overall, if you're using a previous build of windows 10 I would say avoid this one as it is a big disappointment. It feels like Microsoft have ignored all that positive feedback that has been given to them and taken massive steps backward. It's a damn shame.
They perform packet inspection on HTTP headers, if they see a desktop browser user agent then it's naughty time for you.
Before I switched over to a sim only plan that included tethering I got around that limit by simply tunnelling the traffic through an SSH connection. It is pretty easy to bypass, use a VPN, tunnelled SSH etc.
Only Microsoft could make it hard to port a web browser.
Mozilla, Google, Opera and Apple can all not only manage multiple versions of windows but also multiple operating systems. You really have to wonder what Microsoft's thinking is of tying some of the capabilities so tightly to the OS are.
You might have trouble then, all big international corporations do that. Amazon, Apple, Google, Starbucks, Microsoft, Yahoo etc.
So, you may find it somewhat troublesome if you're avoiding those companies if you want to say do a search for something on the net. And before you mention something like duckduckgo, they use bing.
The only way it will stop is if politicians grow some balls and legislate to not allow tax avoidance schemes like the ones these corporations have been using so far. But the reality is, the politicians won't.
I've done my tech buying for the year and honestly why would I switch to Windows 8 anyway? There's no incentive to switch, I get an inferior experience from Windows 7.
Bought a few toys this year like a Nexus 7, an SSD for the pc etc. My next purchase will not be Windows 8, i'll see what Windows 9 is like for my next OS update. Heck, I could even end up on Ubuntu for all I know by that point.
Windows 8 is an improvement over 7, if only they'd kept the start menu and made the start screen/metro/modern ui optional I would be singing its praises.
If you use something like Start8 or Classic Start Shell then it's all good as you then never have to interact with the awful start screen. There are a number of little things like the task manager is a great improvement. But honestly, I can't seriously recommend Win8 over Win7.
The forcing of a touch screen UI into a desktop keyboard/mouse environment is the very epitome of stupidity. How did anyone at Microsoft seriously not put up their hand at some point and say "isn't having to move the mouse cursor to the side of the screen where there is no indicator that it does anything horribly unintuitive?" or a various number of other usability problems that windows 8 creates.
It boggles my mind how Microsoft have managed to be the jack of all trades and so have become the master of none. Apple and Google have realised you can't force a desktop UI into a touch screen device and vice-versa, why can't Microsoft?
"Obviously, they're going to take down the notice, get through as much Friday evening/Saturday weekend traffic without seeing it as possible, and then put up the new notice after 47.9 hours."
That's just tempting fate on Apples part. That said, this is all highly entertaining. If Apple hadn't done their little strop this wouldn't be all over the news sites in a Streisand like effect.
You're right.
But, now this person has an image plastered over the internet the chances of him going abroad are next to nil. He'll be limited to Russia for the rest of his life. Lest Georgia put a request for his extradition with some pretty solid criminal evidence.
Because that is what I'd do, I'd find out who this person is and keep an eye out for when he goes abroad. The moment he lands in another country I'd put out an arrest warrant through interpol and have him extradited to Georgia.
So, no going to defcon for this fellow. Ever.
Actually, you're wrong on that. The Nexus One had a microsd slot.
A few reasons why I like a large amount of storage 1. I have more than 16GB of music. 2. Google Music isn't yet active in the UK like in the US (as in streaming from the cloud, but I understand this might be available next month) 3. Streaming music over a mobile network is very expensive, because it uses lots of data. So therefore isn't practical hence I need to store it on an sd card.
I might hold back and see if Google release a 32GB or 64GB Nexus 4. I'm still of the preference about screen size though, 4.3" is my sweet spot.
A phone that is a Nexus device, has an sd card slot, a 4.3" screen at 720p with a decent camera, 2GB RAM and a minimum of 16GB storage. (essentially an upgraded Galaxy S2 but with software support from Google rather than Samsung)
I hate this obsession with ever larger screens, 4.3" is my sweet spot of screen size on a mobile phone.
You're really early in the game, essentially you are still in what i'd consider the tutorial/introductory phase.
As for how far can guards see etc. You need to use runes you find (by using the heart) to upgrade your powers. (I'm on the pc, so pressing J brings up the screen for that)
Also, you get a little warning about guards seeing you by the little three bolts thing above their heads. It's at three they go into full alert and see you.
As long as you're crouched the guards won't hear you.
As to getting better, it gets better and better.
I feel like this game has been a long time coming, I love the style of it. Everything about it is pure class. It really does put to shame a LOT of what people consider AAA games.
I've been doing this for a while now with both DVD and Bluray. Buy film, copy onto media centre pc (or re-encode to save space).
Why bother with the hassle of creating accounts and drm when I can easily rip the film onto my media centre pc or just download it from a less than reputable place if I'm feeling extra lazy. Then I've got a easy to use front-end to all my media without having to dig through a bunch of dvd/bluray boxes.
The front end to which I refer is XBMC of course.
They're referring to their australis thing.
As to metro, I don't think I've ever heard them say anything negative about it. They have been very rightly vocal about MS limiting Windows 8 RT to IE only. Which is an awful, awful decision on MS' part.
I highly recommend classic shell from what i've used so far it's the best start screen replacement. It makes Windows 8 usable again.
It's the same story over and over with Oracle, they buy up a company which runs a project relying on a community of developers. Then, Oracle does something to piss off the community which then goes off and does its own thing. See Jenkins/Hudson and OpenOffice/Libre Office.
If you need to find something the UI on the start screen is terrible since you have to scroll horizontally, the gigantic buttons waste vast amounts of screen space, the entire UI is designed for a touch screen rather than a mouse and keyboard.
Also, it plays into breaking the users train of thought. This is known as the doorway effect. (google this, it's quite interesting)
Say you're working on a document and you need to open something else, so you go to the start screen which covers the entire screen and you open a program you were wanting on a second monitor or side by side with the document. Only you've now forgotten what you were thinking of.
Sounds funny I know, but having something that doesn't cover what you were working on keeps it at the forefront of human memory. Ever walk through a doorway into a room and forgotten why you went in there in the first place? Same effect, the doorway acts as a "new thing, new memory" event just as the start screen does.
Honestly, I would like a higher screen resolution on my S2 than 800x480 like 720p or 1080p.. but for me the S2 screen size is the perfect size. I can just reach all parts of the screen without the use of my other hand, hence mobile.
To be fair, I'm pretty fond of it. If I could have an upgraded S2 with the same shape, size etc along with the 2000mah battery (it's an official thing samsung sell for the S2) I'd be perfectly happy.
"There's nothing wrong with Windows Phone 7"
Does not support native compiled code for the processor architecture
Does not have multitasking
Does not allow browser engines other than IE
Does not support OpenGL thereby limiting its usefulness for cross platform games
MS have too many limits upon the manufacturers (for example, 800x480 is the maximum screen resolution)
I can continue if you like?
If you can't admit to a platforms limitations and failings, then how can you ever expect it to improve?
A note on Chrome, whilst you can download an app named Chrome on the iPhone. It isn't Chrome itself. It's merely a reskin of the Safari webkit engine. As Apple forbid browser engines other than their own.
Also the fast safari nitro javascript engine is limited to Safari only, so all those browser safari reskins on the appstore use a much slower js engine. Lovely eh? It's one of the reasons I stopped using an iPhone and switched to Android.
By the way, windows phone has the exact same limitation. You're stuck with IE. Lovely eh?
I can see them removing features that are rarely used on the Nexus 7 like GPS (it's useless outside of a wifi network anyway, so all it's really telling me is where I know I currently am) and the front facing camera.
But knocking the storage capacity down to 4GB would be a nightmare, it's bad enough for those people on the 8GB. But with 4GB after the OS and a few apps they'd run out of space damn quickly.
Can't say I like the new kindle fire much, but amazon were bang on the money when they said the minimum should be 16GB.
Pure speculation warning.
My guess, is Apple and Google are disagreeing over some aspect of Google Maps as a separate app. Like Apple want a feature add/removed from it. Whilst Google probably want something add/removed or possibly an option for the user to select Google Maps as the default. (which Apple would not like)
Oh stop whining dx.
First, there is a button at the bottom right on Google Maps called "Report a problem" that allows people to quickly send corrections. Because, lets admit it nothing is perfect. Especially with something as hard to do as mapping an entire bloody planet.
Second, google maps only has rare occasional mapping problems. I can't actually remember the last time I came across something incorrect.
Third, Apple maps in its current state is horrendous. Lets not beat about the bush here, it was released before it was ready by at least a year if not more. Want to know why this is a story? Because it is newsworthy and people are loudly complaining about Apple maps.
TL;DR.
Moral of the phone market place, don't become stagnant. Nokia became stagnant (and still is sadly), Apple came and ate their cake with a vastly superior phone UI/UX for consumers and the press made them darlings for it.
That's why people were digging into Nokia, because whilst they were number one their share of the phone market was falling off a cliff whilst they dithered around with shitty phones in comparison to the iPhone.
I frequently see iphones, android phones and blackberry phones. Not once have I seen a win phone.
The UK is Europes biggest smartphone market, if MS want to make a dent anywhere it has to be here. Sad thing is their market share is decreasing, it went from 1 percent last year to 0.4 percent this year.
The only place in the big European countries it saw growth was Germany for some bizarre reason. (0.9 to 1.4 percent)
