What a joke

"Following further restructure, Dick Smith will be divested as a going concern to an appropriate buyer and will continue to operate as normal."

It ceased to being a going concern when it became another toaster shop.

How many people have had Chrome installed when they have been installing something else. I've seen it on numerous PC's and the people have not actually made a point of installing it. It has just turned up with something else.

mikebartnz

If I remember correctly the Linux version got pulled at about the same time as MS and Corel settled a disagreement and it isn't strange when you consider Borland stopped producing Kylix at the same time as MS and Borland settled a disagreement.

mikebartnz

@Dazza

You are being very disingenuous by ignoring the behemoth that MS is.

All they have to do to convince everyone of their good intent is add that there has to be a mechanism to turn off secure boot so that other OS's can be booted to get certification but they seem very reluctant to do so.

I often use a Linux live CD or USB drive to sort out a PC Windows has screwed up.

mikebartnz

Speak for your self.

I don't know what cave you have been living in if you think NZ is low tech. May be you need to travel more.

Rolling updates

Why maintain old kernels when you can do rolling updates like PCLinuxOS does.

mikebartnz

You're right

You're right none of them have the balls to do what is right.

mikebartnz

Pathetic

Quite frankly the whole USA patent system is pathetic and a lot of USA firms are coming across as childish little bullies. Why the hell they can't just start competing by putting out a better product rather than being a bunch of patent trolls I will never know

mikebartnz

Waste of time

By the time IE10 comes out all the other browsers would have moved on and probably by several versions so the article is a complete waste of time in my books.

I to am suspicious of him testing IE10 and not the latest test builds of the other browsers.

mikebartnz

Grow up

You are just throwing all your toys out.

Considering Opera's presence in the mobile field I think it is a good move of theirs as this is where the real growth will be. I wish them luck.

mikebartnz

W*****s

When are MS going to learn to just compete without behaving like a bunch of tossers.

F*** Sony

Years ago I decided to never touch another Sony product after trying to help a friend with his Sony MP3 which was so riddled with DRM crap that it was next to useless.

Quote"i think ill stick with Windows thanks, whats linux anyway,"

Quote"oh and before you down vote me as well you will note ive not offered an opinion in favour of Linux or windows,"

Yes you have.

It would be truly interesting to know what the issues were. Someone said printing was one in which case the whole thing hasn't been handled properly

@SCO

Oracle are coming across like SCO and alienating too many people. They better watch out else they will go the way of SCO.

Stupid sods

WP7 hasn't exactly been a great success and they want to hobble it even more. Really bright move but that's alright because the programmers will put their time into Android instead.

The past

It makes me wonder why Ray Ozzie is leaving. Is it because of bumbling Balmer and his lack of vision for the future so he tries to cling to the past.

As far as I'm concerned MS have been full of piss and wind accusing Linux of infringing their patents and yet doing nothing apart from being a big bully and not pointing out the patents being infringed.

@Dest

Quote "Something like that would make it appear that Steve Ballmer is a failure."

Well he is isn't he.

Weta

Jesus I wonder how Wetea studios ever survives listening to so much tripe here.

Compact Folders

Having read a few comments here I think quite a few would benefit by running Compact Folders and I can't understand people keeping gigabytes of old emails but see it all the time.

Unhappy

Who cares

It's a beta and not out for a month and the release not out until next year so who cares as it is too far behind and it doesn't run on linux.

mikebartnz

Sad sacks

I have never owned an Apple product and don't intend to in the near future but what a bunch of sad sacks here. My three to four year old Nolia will drop reception if I hold it incorrectly so I took note of what it said in the manual. Big deal.

mikebartnz

Get rid of the idiot.

They would need to get rid of that idiot Ballmer for one thing.

Quote "Never mind the dialogs with controls off the bottom, because no-one would ever use a screen that was only 600 pixels high."

Hold the Alt key down and click and drag anywhere within the window.

If it is one used regularly click on the menu button on the title bar, go to Advanced/special window settings/Geometry and force position or size.

Those two have no equivalent within Windows.

@Derek Bradshaw

While you won't find a Gnome version of DigiKam it will still run in Gnome just like Gnome apps will run in KDE so DigiKam, DigiKam, DigiKam, DigiKam.

@AC 23rd June 2010 09:40 GMT : Wrong

Do you really think that when you pay for Windows (whether on a new PC buy or the full product) you are not paying all those programs you mention.

mikebartnz

They are.

That's because they are. They are too far behind the game.

mikebartnz

Yeah right

If MS think it was the wrong thing to do it must be the right thing.

mikebartnz

@Eddy Ito

Well said. I can't think of anything so brainless as having the homepage the same as the default search.

mikebartnz

Good news

Great news I have been waiting a while for it to run on the latest version.

Mark Simon you need to use an older version of Lightning.

blackworx wrong you can.

mikebartnz

@Neal5

You are either a troll or thick as a plank when you write

"CrptoAPI isn't broken. the browsers are broken, and all those who harpen on about the OS being broken are wrong."

It processes characters in a string after the null character which it should not do so it is very broken. You said yourself that you weren't a programmer so when it has been pointed out that you don't know what you are talking about it would be wise to shut up.

the installations are one of the reasons why i find linux too annoying to use as well.

Lets say, for example, the firefox guys release firefox 4 tomorrow and it's going to completely revolutionise the web. With windows i got to the firefox site, click get firefox. double click the installer file that downloads, press next a couple of times and i'm using it.

for linux, if it's in the package manager then great, it's really straightforward, probably, update the list and click install.

Of course if, by some strange happenstance, the repository for that distro hasn't been updated yet, thats when the problems start, i go to the firefox site and am presented with 2 or 3 different types of package files, and a load of source code. Probably for 6 different versions. stable builds, experimental branch builds etc. i download one of the packages hoping it's the right one, and double click it, 9/10 times, if anything happens at all, the package manager launches and i get told i need something else, a library with a cryptic name also not in the repository, before it can be installed. If you have to compile it, yes make/make install might work, if you happen to have all the right headers installed already, but why shoudl you have to compile it!

Somehow, just double clicking on a file and pressing next, seems simpler to me!

"

Once more someone who doesn't know what they are talking about. Without even leaving the file manager I can go to the Firefox download site and download the file firefox-3.5.2.tar.bz2 uncompress it then run the program and when the next version comes out I delete the old directory and do the same again.

mikebartnz
Jobs Horns

Typical

Why don't they just give up on it as it is usually just an annoyance for legitimate owners.

mikebartnz

About time

Now this only needs to happen for the rest of the world.
