nbn™ puts the acid on Australia's ISPs to speed up its NBN

Mike Echo

Re: The Need For Speed

"Then receiving a tailored speed to expect AFTER you place the order." (my caps)

Unless there is a way of testing the speed prior (eg a trial), users will not want to pay more money for the top tier speed if it is unattainable at that location.

Welcome to the Wipe House: President Trump shreds climate change, privacy, LGBT policies on WhiteHouse.gov

Here, have an upvote.

It will be interesting keeping an eye on the website http://www.track-trump.com/ which will simply keep track of promises kept or broken in the first 100 days. I am certainly no fan of Donald Trump but there is no law against voting for an imbecile. Or against imbeciles voting, for that matter.

Forgive me, father, for I have used an ad-blocker on news websites...

Mike Echo

Sometimes, just sometimes

I use an adblocker and will turn it off for sites that allow me to view decent content (ie not clickbait) and as long as the ads are not in my face.

NBN delivers boring, solid result for 2015/2016

Mike Echo

Re: 82% at 25Mbps or slower

Who would be foolish enough to pay for "up to 100Mbps" if the copper making up the last mile was in such poor condition it meant that they wouldn't get anywhere near that speed? I certainly wouldn't pay for 100 if 50 was the most I could get.

Liberal Party of Australia: why are you paying so much for ancient software?

Mike Echo

Lo tech

Old software, old copper for an updated broadband network. The Libs really are showing their true level of understanding of modern technology.

No means no: Windows 10 nagware's red X will stop update – Microsoft

Mike Echo
FAIL

Gun, meet foot

MS really are very, very silly sometimes. Windows 10 is probably not too awful an OS (I'm still on 7 as I have no need to upgrade just yet) but instead of letting customers upgrade IF and WHEN they want, they try to trick people into upgrading just so MS's numbers look good. Now I don't care what you say about the red X, it has always meant cancel ever since I have used a Windows OS so pretending otherwise is just pixie dust. Episodes like this show that MS really have very little respect for their customers (you know, the people who pay their salaries). Idjits.

Lester Haines: RIP

Lester, you were always good for a laugh old son. Any time I saw your name on a byline, I always clicked to read the article as you rarely disappointed. Thanks for the smiles.

Low-sugar fizzy drink

Why would they tax low-sugar fizzy drink if they are aiming to reduce sugar consumption?

Switkowski wades into NBN leak debate, ALP is furious

Silver linings

The only good thing to come of this is that now the issue of Oz broadband (Malcolm Turnbull's version of it, along with all its peculiarities) is in front of the public's eyes, not long before an election is due.

Surface Book nightmare: Microsoft won't fix 'Sleep of Death' bug

Mike Echo

Re: Suggestions

"As nearly always is true in cases like this, failure to do so promptly and cheerfully will cost them more in the end, both money and good will."

Exactly. It never ceases to amaze me how companies profess to "value the customer", "focus on the basics", "empower", "stakeholders", <insert another business cliche here> and then just duck and weave, preferring to try and hide things under the carpet in the hope that the problem will go away. This is very, very poor service on the part of Microsoft and I hope the issue is reported far and wide and comes back to bite them on the bum.,

Will facebook die?

A while ago I thought that facebook was like so many other things that seem to come and go and imagined it would only be a matter of time before the novelty wore off and facebook would fade into obscurity. Once mums and dads started using facebook, I thought that the cool factor would have evaporated and that kids would move on to the next big thing. Nobody wants to be seen hanging out with parents and all that. Personally, I have a facebook account but only check it once or twice a year, mainly to thank people for wishing me happy birthday after they have been prompted by facebook.

Maybe I was completely wrong (I know advertising income does not equal user growth but advertisers will not throw money at a dwindling user base). It would be interesting to see just where the user growth is happening, because if it is increasing in places where people don't have much of a disposable income then such growth is not going to do much for advertisers.

Will the facebook novelty wear off? When?

Australia's broadband policy is a flimsy, cynical House of Cards

Mike Echo

Politicised

After being told to "destroy the NBN" when in opposition, Turnbull cannot admit that FTTP was the best choice after gaining power. It has become a political football.

Waleed Aly's NBN intervention is profoundly unhelpful

Mike Echo

Slow news day

I think Wally made a spur of the moment comment and you are making a mountain out of a molehill. I have seen more "profoundly unhelpful" comments from those in positions of authority (on both sides) who should know better and yet still do it intentionally.

Yahoo! Mail! is! still! a! thing!, tries! blocking! Adblock! users!

Mike Echo

Do people still use Yahoo?

I dumped Yahoo quite a while back (search for "Yahoo" and "XSS" to see how vulnerable your Yahoo account is). With the number of free alternatives, I really can't see why anyone would bother with Yahoo any longer. Yahoo has been slowly sliding down the slope of irrelevance for quite some time now.

"hideously obtrusive apps like hangouts"

Citroën C4 Cactus BlueHDi: A funky urban crossover

Microsoft on the Threshold of a new name for Windows next week

Mike Echo

Re: Privacy and Clouds are big buzzwords these days.

Yep, I reckon the name will definitely be something cloudy, but, seeing as marketing will be creating it the name will end up really lame. It will end up with the kind of name only suits would think was "cool".

Yahoo! webmail! hijacks! are! back!...

Mike Echo

Bye bye Yahoo

I was getting heaps of these dodgy emails and while I didn't click on the link, I visited the website (top level, then second level) by entering the url manually. I just got curious is all, but it was definitely a momentary lapse of reason, as my yahoo address then sent out some of the same stuff. That will learn me for being cocky and thinking I was too clever to fall for this shi*t.

Anyway, I have since removed my Yahoo account and also deleted *anything* that required a Yahoo login (eg flickr, Yahoo Answers, etc). I should have done this ages ago, Yahoo is just problematic and not worth the aggravation.

Well, that about wraps it up for the NBN

Mike Echo

@ Malcolm Turnbull

" What is interesting is that in a straight contest between 100 mbps and 50 mbps from the same telco with a modest price differential, there has been a decline in the 100 mbps share."

While the drop in 100 mbps user numbers might be "interesting", you cannot really use the drop to draw any conclusions as to why the numbers have dropped. There are probably various dynamics at play and we do not know the entire scenario.

Mozilla puts squeeze on slow Firefox add-ons

Mike Echo

Trade-offs

The reason I stick with Firefox (Pale Moon actually) is that some of the add-ons are almost indispensable. It's just a matter of keeping them at a minimum and being prepared to accept a performance hit as a trade-off for the benefit provided by the particular add-on/s. No doubt some people will grizzle about their start up times even though they have a squillion add-ons installed.

Telstra stirs NBN pot with 4G/LTE deployment announcement

I think mobile broadband might complement fibre rather than cannibalise its userbase. I don't think too many people would voluntarily have wireless (given its record of flakiness here) as their main home connection.
