Wrestling with Microsoft's Nano Server preview

Dr Christian

I'm having trouble thinking of a valuable use case for this 'OS'. It looks like a solution looking for a problem. Why run a whole OS - nano as it may be to bootstrap an application?

Exactly why I tossed out my android phone and went back to an old blackberry. Blackberrys may be out of flavour, but to me they're the most trustworthy smart phone available.

Oh noz

A security flaw. Lets all have an argument about how shit ms is and how superior linux is and then counter arguments. Exploits and security issues happen every day to all OS's with any significant user base. Who gives a damn, patch your system and move on.

RIM answers Apple iPad with...The BlackPad*

Dr Christian

interesting

I myself am looking forward to more details about this product. I'm certainly a blackberry fan and loathe apple products.

RIM has an excellent track record of secure, configurable products. Unlike apple.

Torrent sites: Here today, gone tomorrow and no one even cares

Dr Christian

No one cares

Because you take down a few torrent sites and fifty more spring up. There's always IRC for your warez and a plethora of ftp servers with terabytes of content. Who gives a damn. You can get whatever you want whenever you want and this isn't going to change.

trusting banking information to convicts

If my bank opts into this bizarre scheme I'm surely high tailing it out of their clutches. This is the worst idea ever without even mentioning the huge unemployment in the UK.

Computer controlled cars?!

Why people would buy a car with a computer in it is beyond me. Once there are no second hand mechanical cars left on the road, I think I'll stick to my bicycle.

Botnet takedowns 'don't hurt crooks enough'

Dr Christian

Linux isn't the answer

If the majority of computers in the world run linux, the majority of botnets would be written to run on linux.

Low or not ...

"a relatively low 16.84 Mbps. By comparison, one in five service providers reported botnet-fueled attacks that in the 1-4 Gps range last year, with the worst attack hitting 49 Gbps"

When using techniques and tools like slowooris a great deal of bandwidth is not required for a DOS. If a webserver can be brought down with ~20 Mbps, taking one down with 50 Gbps is just masturbation.
