Facebook bans sharing of news in Australia – starting now – rather than submit to pay-for-news-plan

BonezOz
FAIL

Couldn't even share this article

What does it say when FB blocks ALL news from being posted? I see some here who praise FBs move, but do you realise that even tech news sites like The Reg are being blocked? I tried to share this article on FB and was told "Something went wrong, and we're trying to fix it." BS They've blocked those of us Down Under from sharing any and all news.

Alert

Thursday Double Whammy!

Being on the fast ring has been fun, and I'll continue to stay there. But an interesting thing occurred yesterday, got a update and reboot message about noonish (AWST (GMT+8)) so took care of that when I got home, as I know it breaks Teamviewer, but just before bed, less than 10 hours after the first round, I received another pending update/reboot. Bloody hell MS, twice in one day???

Seriously though, if push comes to shove and a full rebuild is required, which wouldn't be the first time (or second for that matter), I believe it will be time to go back to a solid debian based linux build.

Re: Personal Tragedy

I had a similar issue about 17 years ago when Win XP was released. I had just "acquired" a copy of the "Devil's own" version and decided to upgrade my computer from Win 98. Trouble was my computer at the time only had a 6.4GB HDD and I was keeping all my kids photos on it. Now the installation went smoothly until I got into Windows and saw that I only had about 20mb of free space left. Immediately decided to reformat and reinstall Win98 until I could get a bigger drive, completely forgetting that there was about 3 months of baby photos sitting there. I was in the dog house for a while after that.

But, I learned a valuable lesson that day, backups are important. Now all the photos and personal documents are stored in several places, in a backup file on a separate external drive, in my Google and OneDrives, on another drive that I carry with me to and from work, as well as another copy sitting on another computer.

And I'd like to thank the author of this article, as he caused my paranoia to kick in and I've just created another backup file to sit in the cloud.

Not Samsung

I'm sure that this would be an awesome opportunity to earn some extra cash IF you're running the latest version of Android! But as we all know if you're using a Samsung phone, you're pretty much stuck on last years (or the year before) update of which most bugs would have already been found.

WTF?

Where can I sign up???

I work for an NFP, one of the biggest in Australia,to be honest, and as of this morning we purchased 25 CRM online user licenses for $555 a month. This combined with Azure and Office 365 is going to cost us a bit. While we did get the NFP pricing, if I had have known about this little bit of information I would have been searching for it. As it were, none of the Microsoft representatives even bothered with the fact that their company is giving the stuff away for free...

So, long story short, does anyone have a link where I can sign up for the freebies?

Microsoft will give away Windows 10 FREE - for ONE year

BonezOz

Re: I'm free! No, you're an idiot

I think that this paragraph points to Windows 10 not being subscription:

"The upgrade will only be free in the first 12 months after release and will last for the "supported lifetime of the device." Microsoft said the new OS will run on PCs, tablets, phones, and a new device to be announced later today."

And honestly, don't most organisations already pay a type of subscription fee? It's called "Software Assurance."

Microsoft splurges 2½ INSTAGRAMS buying Minecraft maker Mojang

BonezOz

This will be interesting!

I'm a huge fan of Minecraft. My kids got me started and since it's cheaper that a set of Lego I took to it like a kid in a candy store.

In a way I'm a bit disappointed in Notch for bailing, but at the same time I can understand, Minecraft is HUGE!

Fortunately, from what I've read so far, Microsoft isn't wanting to change the actual game or it's community. But there are some interesting things that it could do with it.

First, from what I understand, Notch didn't want to do a WinPhone port due to the small user base, so that will probably be one of the first area's that MS concentrates on, and this will be good because it will translate into a port for Windows 8 RT meaning an even larger base. But at the same time, due to the underlying structure and coding language behind WinPhone and RT a full recode of Minecraft may be necessary, migrating it away from the memory hog that Java is.

If there is a move away from Java and into another language we may see an improvement in memory resources and a smoother experience on older slower machines.

Lastly, MICROSOFT BETTER NOT RUIN THIS AWESOME GAME!!!

Be interesting if it were possible to take into account all the custom built PCs enthusiasts, such as myself, build. I haven't purchased an off the shelf PC in over 20 years, but have probably built at least 1 a year since.

Who cares, it's free, and if you can complete it, at least it will look good on your CV. I'll do it, mainly because I don't have the time, nor the funds to take a programming course in a classroom setting. Now I'll have something to do on my weekends and any other free time I can find.

Honestly, Windows 8 will have a market for PC's, but it will be a niche market. Businesses won't be upgrading anytime soon and even startups won't be looking at it for a while. Currently most businesses I've been involved in are still in a slow roll out phase for Windows 7. For those that will purchase Windows 8 they, more than likely, will be those that are buying new laptops or workstations with it pre-installed, and they'll be end users, not business users.

System builders, hardcore gamers, and enthusiasts will eventually upgrade to Win8, but I can't see it being anytime soon. Some in these groups, myself included, will have one machine running Win8 as a test bed, but won't upgrade our main machine until all the little gremlins are sorted out, or possibly even until the first service pack.

Myself? Well I've had a chance to play with Win8 on a standard workstation and even though it looks pretty, until touch screen monitors come down in price (and if Win8 can support multiple touchscreens) I'll stick with Windows 7 or Server 2008R2.

TPG falls foul of ACCC for false ads

BonezOz

I knew that!

What's funny is I use TPG and new all about the cost of my "unlimited" plan being $59.99 a month. Doesn't take much to know this as their advertising has the standard asterix and if you read the fine print associated with the ad, you'll see it's not $29.99 a month.

TPG also has the cheapest unlimited plan in Oz, cheapest mobile phones, and cheapest home telephone. I've been using them for almost 5 years now and couldn't be happier.

Serious Road Kill

Have to agree with Jubtastic1, without a sound the bike is a death trap in the city. It's bad enough that here in Sydney the taxi drivers are blind and slightly deaf, but have a bike that's completely silent? Well sorry, you're going to die.

Jub, also, don't ever give up riding due to procreation. I didn't, and neither did a lot of rider friends, best excuse is that it's cheaper than public tranportation, and allows you to get to and from where your going so that you can be home in time to help cook dinner and put the kiddies to bed.

I call BS

Thank God I don't have to vote, being a permanent resident and all, the choices in government this time around are worse than last time.

First we have to deal with one government both attempting to assist the current generation of students with computers and education by giving them a laptop, then that same government is trying to put into place this BS freedom of speech filter on the internet, yet are building a fibre network for faster filtered internet, go figure.

Then we have the other side that's going to take away the laptops and revert to old methods of education and I have yet to see a comment about the proposed freedom of information filter. Then they want to stop this whole National Broadband scheme and send us even further into the dark ages.

Honestly, this is complete and utter BS, we need a government in place that is both mindful of spending yet will continue to advance Australia technologically. Labor is currently the best choice for that, as long as the permanently drop this BS internet filter plan.

Nerdless unintuitiveness

First, it is a nice white laptop.

Second, you cannot lump a Mac into a non-nerdy container. Take my little lady, she is the most non-nerdy person you'll ever meet. She doesn't like computers, but can use them as needed. But don't put her in front of a Mac, she hates it, the OS that is, she can't find anything, doesn't know how to launch programs, can't stand Safari, etc...

She's a teachers aid at a school that has nothing but Macs, and she refuses to assist the students during their ICT classes because of the Mac OS.

At least now you can install Windows on a Mac.

iWill not own

I've seen the light, so to speak. I like to modify, tinker, tweak, my OS. I like to be able to install apps, whether I bought or downloaded them. I like to read PDF's or copy that text in the PDF and edit it in a format that can be edited by others around the globe. I like to completely wipe the OS from the machine and install another OS if I so choose.

From the look of the iPad, it is just a larger version of the iPod touch and iPhone. Can I wipe the OS off and install a variant of Linux? I think not. But in the case of most mobile (cell) phones your not able to do that anyway. iWill not even own the Google phone, no matter who manufactures it.

Maemo is looking chuff, and I do believe I'm holding out on that one.

Google expands plan to run own internet

BonezOz

What is Google good for?

Every day we hear something about Google this or Google that, Googles taking over this or that, now we've got the GoogleDNS stuff, great :( Not.

Google has done some great things, their maps are awesome, gmail has been my personal mail address since it was by invite only, I like the iGoogle page for quick reference, and their search engine is better than anything else out there (anyone remember WebCrawler?)

But that's as far as my usage goes, I won't rely on them for DNS, I'll stick with my ISP for that, and IF my ISP switches to Google, well, I'll find something better.

We all know that these guys make their money through adverts, simple, and how much better is it if they have the DNS servers tracking IP addresses and frequented IP's? ALL YOUR AD BELONG TO GIS

All anyone has to do is say NO to stuff that can take over lives, i.e. Android, Chrome, ChromeOS, DNS, and all will be right in the world.

Lily Allen exits Twitter, bins BlackBerry

It's going away, slowly

Some of you may not care about "poor little Lily" well neither do I, but there are a lot of individuals out there that do, just as there are people that like Miley Cyrus. These are mainly teens, and a good proportion of users that make up places like FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, and other "social" networks are teens, so when they see their role model leave the site, they may be inclined to as well.

If we could get a dozen or so more big named celebrities leaving these sites, they would die out, which could hopefully have the effect of forcing people back into Pubs and coffee shops to do their socialisation.

Thank you, Lily, now go and convince your other "friends and followers" to do the same thing!

Twitter slaps itself with $1bn price tag

Twit, twat, splat

Twitter's business model doesn't exist. What probably started as a fun little tool has developed poorly into a large server farm hosting hundreds of thousands of meaningless crap. I actually had enough of it, I couldn't follow squat on it due to the amount of self-promotion. The amount of bots that just continually blast self-marketing is amazing. And the pr0n bots? Don't get me started, had to block anywhere from 10 to 20 a day before I gave the whole thing up.

If they get this $50m, what's it going to do, keep the infrastructure up for another couple of year? Then what, ask for an additional $100m for the next couple of years? All I foresee is a big splat, users leaving in droves, servers crashing and data so easily hacked into there will be 10 of each user wandering the world due to identity theft.

Go away Twitter, you ain't worth $50m, let alone $1b.
