Cisco, IBM tackle home video conferencing

Didn't they already try pushing consumer video conferencing?

Video conferencing sounds like a great idea until you realize that you don't want to see the other person 99% of the time. I know what my parents and friends look like, why do I need to see them?

Even enterprise implementation of video conferencing rarely lives up to expectations. Shortly after being set up, the desire to use the system starts faltering.

Dell Computers

I ordered/used Dell Laptops/Desktops/Workstations almost exclusively for the last 10 years in all of my jobs. Their quality at all ends of the purchase/fulfillment/support spectrum has plummetted in the last few years. I recently started ordering/testing HP laptops and workstations which I've been happy with them so far. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever find a manufacturer that the powers that be are comfortable with while getting the performance/service level I'd like.

WTF?

What is funny about gaming consoles being used?

Maybe I'm missing the funny, but linked gaming consoles have been used as a poor man's supercomputer for years now. The gaming consoles often offer way more processing power for the dollar than a computer of similar spec. I know Sony was getting their panties in a bunch because researchers were purchasing loads of PS3s to link and crunch numbers. Sony was losing money on those scenarios because these researchers would never purchase any games or anything for the Sony-subsidized kit.

Sure enough

I've been waiting to download media and get some product keys since the same day it went down... I emailed them yesterday morning to inquire about getting the media I need and haven't heard a thing in response yet. Just wonderful.

So...

Someone finds a substantial hole in their security and instead of fixing the problem and keeping quiet, they launch into a bunch of yelling and posturing... Interesting tactic for keeping your company name from receiving bad publicity. I don't think it is working.

FAIL

@Tony Hoyle

Funny you say that. We had a user go from the US to Europe with a Windows Smartphone about a year ago and he was actively blocked from accessing the wireless data network by Orange and I believe also O2. He called Orange and they walked him through removing some small file/registry entry that was still left there even after uninstalling skype. After that everything worked fine.
