Ah, this should totally reassure Euro workers: They'll get Brexit EU settled status app on iPhones from October

Re: Priceless ...

Well of course they won't fall out of the sky - because they'll be GROUNDED, you dullard of a f*cking gammon.

Farewell to function keys and swappable SSDs in the new two-port MacBook Pro

Re: Function keys are useless, good riddance

Apples aren't aimed at professionals, and haven't been for some years now.

I don't have to save my work, it's in The Cloud. But Microsoft really must fix this files issue

But there is such a thing as "scare quotes" ;)

Some people just couldn't understand that turning their computer on wouldn't result in their previous application running, their previous document loaded, the cursor at the same place, and even with the same chunk of text highlighted for formatting.

Doesn't MacOS do this?

DoH! Secure DNS doesn't make us a villain, Mozilla tells UK broadband providers

Re: Mozilla are only partly right

Cleanfeed is 100% irrelevant due to the existence of Tor and VPNs. Its only purpose is to allow the witless dullards in government to point to it and say "Look! Look! We're doing something!" If they were really serious about doing curtailing pedos, they would regulate Tor and VPNs.

Some of you really don't want Windows 10's April 2018 update on your rigs

Re: 'the rate at which Microsoft has been able to shovel code onto PCs...

But Windows 7 IS still an option. I have installed it on around 20 machines this past year, mostly PCs which had Windows 10 preinstalled.

PC shipments just rose, thanks to Windows 10

Re: Kubuntu 18.04 - FOR THE WIN!

Took me 45 mins to do a clean install of Windows 10, so Christ knows what your problem is/was.

Half of all Windows 10 users thought: BSOD it, let's get the latest build

Re: This update is shit

Windows 7 licences can be picked up on eBay for £10.

Spring is all about new beginnings, but it could already be lights out for Windows' Fluent Design

Re: Groove is dead.

Well, I personally would store my music in the cloud so that it's available from any device I'm logged into, but YMMV I suppose.

Windows 10 to force you to use Edge, even if it isn't default browser

Well, so what? Who uses Windows Mail, FFS?

Clearly a purely symbolic gesture since the drive in question is an ancient IDE one. And what about his laptop drive? Or the backups?

Much ado about nothing

Meh. I replaced my Thinkpad's optical drive with a second HDD yonks ago and I haven't looked back. Of course, it helps that the HDD caddy in question is hot-swappable, so it's a matter of seconds to replace it with the DVD-R drive if I really need it.

Haw haw

"Improve competition" my backside. The only thing this'll improve is the bank balances of certain venal MPs (no names, no libel suit).

Mine's the coat with the well-stuffed brown envelope in the pocket ;)

Hah!

Well, that would certainly explain why Symphony is so sucktacular.

Microsoft's Office ribbon hits Mac fans

Stop

Here's hoping

Sod the ribbon, I just hope it's an improvement performance-wise on the execrable Office 2008 for Mac which is a knuckle-dragging sloth on my Quad Xeon with 4GB RAM. I hate to think what it's like on the average iMac.

Amazon Kindle 3 e-book reader

Curt Vile
Thumb Down

@DrXym

The Kindle is by no means restricted to ebooks with DRM. It can read PRC and MOBI files that have no DRM, and it is pretty trivial to convert epubs, txt, rtf and you-name-it to MOBI format using Calibre. This naturally includes ebooks purchased from other sellers.

You can also (if you like) drag your DRMed ebooks from Amazon off your Kindle, and back them up and/or remove the DRM.

In future please do some elementary Googling before putting your fat fingers to the keyboard and flailing away in a fit of frothing righteousness.

Adobe declares 'LOVE' for Apple

FAIL

"We love healthy competition"!?

That's pretty rich coming from the company which closed down Freehand because it was miles better than their shoddy old Illustrator. In fact, Illustrator suddenly becoming the only game in town was what made me switch away from Apple....

Why you subsidize Google's Soviet-style Net

Curt Vile
Thumb Down

I've paid Google my share...

I used to admin a website with a large and sprawling forum, and Google's bot insisted on blithely ignoring the robots.txt and crawling every damn forum thread page by sodding page, to the tune of 2GB or so of bandwidth every couple of months. I eventually had to block it in the .htaccess from everything but the site's index page. I also took the opportunity to block every other damn bot and search spider, but that's another story...

OpenOffice 3.2 - now with less Microsoft envy

Curt Vile
Thumb Down

Personally speaking...

...I find OpenOffice wholly unusable because of the deranged way it handles paragraphs. Simply put, it doesn't allow the user to search and replace across paragraph boundaries. This makes actions which are a breeze in MS Word - like finding two paragraph codes in a row and replacing them with a single paragraph code and a TAB (for example) - a brain-croggling adventure in regular expressions.

Oh God, again with the Applefans' FUD

I just couldn't let that anonyposter get away with the bizarre assertion that MacBooks are cheaper than the equivalent Dells - a quick look on Dell's website reveals that a Vostro 1520 with a GeForce 9300M, twice the RAM of the MacBook, and a faster CPU, is nearly £300 cheaper...
