In theory.

In practice, what you get is a whole lot of people shouting about how the code they run is safe because it's reviewed by millions whereas actually, none of them have reviewed it and odds are pretty high that nobody else has either.

No, I'm a debian user who writes software for several platforms (mainly C and C++) and recognizes that OS evangelism is ultimately self-harming and makes everyone who joins in stupid.

And I am most definitely not a fan of Microsoft's Escher-inspired licensing system.

Re: Confused...

It doesn't appreciably except for the timing. When the USA PATRIOT act (epic naming, guys, not cheesy at all) was introduced pretty much all of America was convinced that Osama bin Laden was going to fly a 747 into their personal trailer with all their guns in it the within the next 45 minutes so SIGINT and law enforcement could ask for anything at all and get it.

None of the big IT players had any chance against that and Google were probably hoping to be awarded the contract since that's their business model anyway.

Paranoia is healthy in this day and age but it's better when you back it up with some research.

dogged

Re: hspasm Bon!

@Matt - it's not really. Yes, it can (under some circumstances) be trivial for the Five Eyes to locate Tor endpoints and traffic analysis can tell you which node is up or down. This accompanied by seemingly innocuous items like power usage (smart meters, anyone?) can help to locate the exact source machine but, and this is important, only if you know who you're looking for and what you're looking at before you start.

TOR can be broken but it's useless for fishing expeditions.

That hasn't changed. I think it's about six months, as a general thing. I agree with the study that licensing on many MS products is not so much byzantine as an outright tribute to MC Escher (no kids, that's not a rapper) - especially those products which no offer a hosted Azure alternative.

Re: Figures lie, liars figure

@Mikel - actually, the Zune was pretty beloved (especially the HD, as I recall) but only by about 100 people since there were only about 100 available for sale and then only in the US. Absolute marketing incompetence rather than a poor product.

It certainly sounded better than an iPod.

Then again, very little sounds quite as poor as an iPod.

Re: More Microsoft marketing lies...so silly.

> So what is the real reason why us here in Blighty can't get our hands on a Surface book for another three months?

No idea. Either distribution supply lines or maybe they can't work out how to send emails without the @ over the 2.

I have to say though, I'd never import a laptop (or buy a Macbook) purely because I don't want to have to dick around with a US keyboard layout.

EDIT - and the Kin was telecoms carrier-specific so at least they had a reason for that. No reason at all for the Zune other than utter incompetence or deliberate self-sabotage.
