European court: Let's not kid ourselves, Uber. You're a transport firm, not a 'digital service'

Tringle

Re: So...

Really, have you ever tried to take a faulty product back to a French retailer? You're lucky if they give you a credit note to spend in their own store with a validity of a month, because it is not them but the manufacturer or importer who is responsible. No, you have to somehow get the product back to the manufacturer, it could be anywhere, at your own expense and risk. If you're lucky you might get it back. I had a DSLR with a manufacturing flaw. Retailer disowned it, I got it back to the importer in Paris, cost more than €50 in insured postage, and it was 6 weeks before the replacement arrived. So I was out of pocket and without my camera. This experience is not atypical. EU guarantees are basically worthless, although some of the larger retailers here in La Belle are now starting to accept moral (because there is no legal) responsibility; they've had to since Amazon arrived with their no questions asked customer service. UK retailers are staggeringly customer focused in comparison.

Great . .

Sorta kinda with very very big buts.

If the user could not access the music for free on Youtube et al then most of them probably wouldn't access it at all. Which means a high percentage of fewer fans, which means a huge drop in physical, download, and concert sales.

The music industry has simply taken a long time to get its head around the fact that technology has seriously changed its business model. Successful musicians and media companies are making more money than ever. So cut it with the bleeding heart rubbish.

Re: TRAITORS@ I ain't Spartacus

Bear in mind that an Israeli Air Force General, when asked 'how far would you go to stop the Iranian nuclear programme?' answered 'about 3000 miles'.

You are conflating the intelligence community with political ambition. Even if there had been no intelligence whatsoever about Sadam Hussein's regime (and let's face it, what little there was was made up by politicians and their shills), Bush and Blair would still have gone to war on some pretext or other.

As H L Mencken said "The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." It's the politicians you need to fear, not GCHQ or the NSA. Damaging the latter does us no service whatsoever. When the next undetected Islamist attack kills dozens of innocents, think about how you wanted to disable the intelligence gatherers. Snowden is a traitor of historic importance, but the intelligence community will recover. The dead from the next downed plane, or eviscerated train or bus won't.

Review: Renault Zoe electric car

Tringle
FAIL

Practical, my *rse

There is nothing practical about an electric vehicle that has, optimistically, a range of 75 miles when it brand new, probably more like 50 miles after a couple of months in the real world. OK for for fat cat city dwellers maybe, but hopeless anywhere else. And you have to pay for the batteries even if you only drive it a few miles a month.

Plus, as others have pointed out, it is Renault. Anyone who has ever had the misfortune to own anything manufactured by Renault knows that you couldn't wish a more unreliable and expensive piece of machinery on your worst enemy.

But here in La Belle we have a government of unreconstructed 1950s socialists and communist. They are, to a man (and woman, and especially the greens) away with the fairies, but alas they did a good job convincing the electorate that they were nice cuddly socialists à la Tony Blair (bad enough I hear you shriek, but they had to get rid of the nymphomaniac midget).

So I am afraid with have got another 3 years or so of this kind of idiocy before normal service is resumed. Whatever that is.

It's JUST possible, but Apple MIGHT not make an iWatch in 2013

Tringle

Called me old fashioned

Yep, you're welcome.

I don't even bother with watches that need batteries anymore, let alone one that needs charging every few days and is just a penile extension.

My everyday watch is a Seiko automatic - I've had far more expensive ones, but they weren't as good. Needs adjusting once every two weeks or so, and never needs any other attention.

But I suspect this is a joke. Come to think of it, just like everything Apple does.

Re: mmmm

1. Some ham fisted 'I guess it ought to look like that' calibration is possible with Linux - worse than useless.

I have never found a colorimeter that works with Linux.

2. Only old versions of Photoshop will run under WINE, and not reliably.

3. Lightroom is the industry standard catalogue and RAW editor. I have used Aftershot Pro on my daughter's Linux machine when I have to, but it's frankly not in the same league.

4. Photoshop is not the only, nor even the most important tool I use. In deference to the commenter who remarked that GIMP is a substitute for a decent photo editor, err, no it's not - it's only 8 bit for a start, doesn't work with (for example)Topaz or OnOne software, and has no adjustment layers.

Lastly, why make life difficult? Machines come with Windows x, all the software and hardware works with them, why fix it if it isn't broken?

Tringle
WTF?

mmmm

I'm a photographer. I have android devices, 'phone and tablet, but there is simply no substitute for a desktop computer for editing and organising my work.

Since I am neither a) stupid nor b) minted that means a windows desktop, Mac being the only possible alternative, but I hate their stupid shiny screens as much as the price tags.

Linux won't do it - can't run monitor calibrations or half a dozen of the important applications I use.

So unless they come a long way and soon, the other devices will always be as well as rather than instead of thingamys.

Whatever, I will never buy anything from idiotTunes, and in the light of this fascism I shall not bother buying any more so called music. Except bargain bin CDs from time to time maybe.

I think that copyright as is is well past its sell by date. I was a signed musician at one time - the record company and management took all of the money from the sale of recordings, I only ever got paid for live performances - and that is he way it should be - the recordings are advertising, no more, and the sooner the recording industry disappears in its current form the better for the world at large.

Ban cameras on 'phones

Personally I despise Apple and all their works, but they are not to blame for the fact that most pictures taken with most camera 'phones are complete dross.

I'm amazed that the complaints are only about lens flare, and not blurred images, thumbs in the way and digital noise, to name but a few of the ubiquitous faults with camera 'phone images in general.

This is because the possessors of this technology haven't, by and large, the faintest idea about photography; not one jot. They are of the same mindset as the drivers of the cars we see in the roadside ditches hereabouts on an almost daily basis - their cars have ESP and so they think they can drive them around any bend on any surface in any weather as fast as they like and the technology will just do everything for them. Well it won't, and 'phone cameras, even the iPhone's which is amongst the best, are still total crap compared to almost anything properly described as a camera.

The answer is pretty much always, and often hilariously so were it not that it affects the business of the downrated hotels.

Apple: I love to hate, and hate to love thee

The after sales care is so well oiled . .

. . because the products are so fragile they are always breaking. And the profit margins are so big that even if they had to replace every single thing they sold free of charge there would still be a gross profit in it.

No Change Here

Before this case hell would have to have frozen over before I bought any Apple product. If the choice is between something Apple make and nothing at all, I'll take nothing at all, thanks. Nothing has changed - it was simply an affirmation process.

That said, I wouldn't have bought a Galaxy tablet either because it was too much like the iPad. Sod all interoperability with anything else, proprietary connector and no memory expansion. Better screen, but essentially just flashy junk.

The real culprit here is the US patent system; the word dysfunctional isn't the half of it. Almost as unfit for purpose as copyright law.

Apple vs Amazon in ereader format smackdown

When they actually sell me something rather than a limited licence

I might consider buying an eBook (even the name is misleading; it's not a book it's a very limited licenced text).

Until then it's Gutenberg press and others all the way for my Kindle. It's a reading longstop at best.

I still read more proper books, they're just so much nicer. And every one is a different shape, size, font, with pretty informative (hopefully) covers. And you can give them to and buy them from charities. They are a tactile as well as intellectual joy.

A while back a friend of mine visited, bursting with enthusiasm about his new Kindle. He also had with him a beautifully produced history book, brim full of inspirational art work including illuminated texts. When I asked him why he hadn't bought the latter book for his Kindle he went quiet.

eBooks are, literally, not worth the paper they are written on.
