Re: The networks pushed themselves into irrelivence

if I recall correctly, Three doesn't and never has supported anything other than 3G networks, hence the name. When out of range of one of its 3G towers your phone would connect to another provider, I forget which one, for telephony purposes over 2G. Crucially this arrangement did not apply to data which could only travel over Three's own network. This worked transparently to (for?) the user. You probably lived in a 3G/Three notspot as they are now known.

addendum:

At the time providers didn't provide coverage maps so caveat emptor!

When I was at school (back in the 80's) we were taught hexadecimal mathematics, and octal and binary, perhaps because of the burgeoning computing industry. My 14,16 and 19 year old daughters have no idea that other bases exist...

The Sod Particle

maybe i'm ignorant but...

how can a gas giant be both tidally locked and have circulating 5000mph winds?

gasses are quite difficult to 'lock' into place.

the researchers also say that they compensated for the planets spin, but if it's locked then its spin is the same period as its orbit and over a transit period won't have rotated much at all...

Neither, I'd hope the IoT heat sensors and or door switches would see I was entering the room, know that it was dark, and turn on the IoT lights for me. Those same sensors would obviously also be talking to my alarm, heating, media and telecommunications servers.

Facebook throws servers on their back in HOT TUBS of OIL

Re: Viscosity?

Such a phase change, (liquid to gas), can carry large amounts of heat away from hot components, but suffer from at least two drawbacks.

1. Once the coolant is in its gaseous phase it becomes a rather efficient insulator, preventing liquid coolant from having maximally efficient contact to the hot component.

2. The collapse of the bubbles of gaseous coolant can cause the erosion of the surfaces adjacent.

A viscous coolant which phase changes to a more fluid liquid solves both of those problems.

I don't know if that's what they're doing but it's a possibility.

BlackBerry Messenger unleashed: Look out Twitter and Facebook

Only one commenter so far has mentioned the business/corporate side of BBM, which is where it started if I remember correctly. Surely, if their corporate software is up to scratch (which given the commenters comments it may not be), then this is the place to go for BYOD implementations. One messaging system to rule them all, any device, install BBM, corporate messaging done. No need to manage separate systems for android, iOS, Win Mobile and Blackberry, plus it's tried and tested, no new technology or upstart software companies to deal with. This must be the play, the yout' market isn't going to fill their coffers is it?

Same here in Nottingham, Currys, Comet AND a PC World all in the same retail park, (city center shops closed down years ago). No wonder Bestbuy didn't last long when they tried to join the party and failed to be any cheaper (or more knowledgeable).

A shame though as this pretty much leaves the large retail space to DSG.
