Apple are historically famous for going in their own direction and ignoring the mainstream industry and going in their own direction. That's what makes them Apple. Yet people are complaining that Apple are doing exactly what they always do and have been for the last 20 odd years!

Why is anyone shocked?

The reason they do this is EXACTLY the same reason why google drop software and api's routinely (remember the rss stuff?). It allows Apple to deal with the pain upfront and gives them a free run at designing new machines without legacy issues. If you try to hedge you end up like Microsoft. Trying to make new OS's with tools and services from 20yrs ago still hanging around causing all sorts of issues.

People in this thread have been saying they have been using their MacBooks for over 5yrs and it's still doing well in some cases. That's because it's was cutting edge then when it didn't have to be. Who was releasing retina screens before they did? I remember all the outrage at how some websites and apps didn't use retina and Apple should have waited. Well guess what, 5yrs later you are benefiting from that move.

And in 5 yrs time when your new MacBook needs a new graphics card and you can just plug it in to whatever side port you need because it's got USB c/thunderbolt 3, you'll be happy. And when you realise that your new camera just automatically syncs photos directly to your laptop or cloud account and you don't need a sd card you'll be like oh, what a good purchase that was.

The fact is Apple always cater for the future, not for now. If you want NOW get a Dell. It's always been like this. I'm happy with that approach. Just admit you like the comfort of the pc world. That's your speed. Fine.

This is such a "British" post.. the cynicism in this country, the lack of respect of achievement, the belittleing of everything done... its astounding!

The mark of someones achievement in this world is what happens when you erase their life from history. How much of that person is connected to how we live now. Regardless of what effort it took or didnt take to do this stuff, its incredible to deny the contribution.

No, Jobs did not invent penicillin, or cure small pox, or make water clean.

But the way you do what you do now in your everday life is down to him and people like Bill Gates etc...

You didnt have personal computers, you didnt use a mouse, you didnt drag windows around a screen, you didnt swipe your phone, you didnt have a laptop etc..

its not to say that he invented things, no he "curated". He is an editor. A leader. Thats why people are celebrating him. His achievement is of "leader" not inventor.

To say that means nothing is to disregard people like Churchill because he didnt hold a gun!

Why does he think that a company should spend time promoting other companies products as if the tech world is some big charity? What a loon..

The context of Apple's html 5 demo is simple. While everyone (Mozilla/Google/IE) were all sitting on the fence, Apple was getting pulverised by Adobe and the "free" press for not supporting Flash. The fact that Flash has NEVER existed in any usable form for any mobile device for 3 yrs was a small insignificant point.. Western culture HATES success, and Apple is the latest success figure to hate.

Anyway, Apple thought it best to inform the world that they support a standard way of doing things on the web called HTML5. And they feel that it can do enough of what Flash does to show consumers that they dont need Flash to survive in this new mobile world. So Apples intention was to show that this is what they believe in. And to stop any ambiguity, i.e. some demo's might not work on all browsers in the same way (because the HTML5 standard is still being implemented by browser dev';s).. Apple makes sure that they show that the products they ship (i.e. Mac. Iphone/Ipad etc..) will run this stuff in Safari, because thats the product they ship.

THAT IS IT... nothing sinister, nothing crazy...

I'd be absolutely shocked if this happened but after thinking about it, it would actually make sense.

The amount of extra money Apple gets from developers buying a mac just to develop iphone apps must be minimal. The reality is Apple mac sales come from people who are either design based or consumers who just use software. Allowing windows users to develop for iphone/ipad is a win win for Apple and MS. It will accelerate app development on the platform and really f*ck with google.

For MS it's going to be a weird concession to make. Realistically, MS is saying we have no hope of producing a competing ipad like device in the forseeable future so we might as well partner Apple on this. It will also signal a departure from MS's strategy of "finger in every pie" to "lets just eat well" and have them focusing on the core businesses.

As much as Xbox is popular etc.. what has it done for them? They make a bit of money now but lost billions doing it. I dont think Apple have the appetite for that again. Apple have shown that you can grow a company without losing money in the short/medium term. If MS never made anything other than Office + Windows stuff they would probably have more dough and be more profitable. Thats the reality.

Now if MS used with webkit for ie9 and Apple used bing as default search I think google would be petrified... The message would be "dont fu*k with Steve Jobs, you have no idea how far he will go to destroy you"..
