it's an unbelievable immature release, and it's the first Windows without windows: am I wrong or all the metro (macro) apps grow to full screen ? It's pathetic to see Skype filling my 17" screen - and then crashing

Dear English friends, don't You ever come to mind of having been carefully brain-washed?

All the posts here, like all your press, etc. seem to me an extreme exercise of glass climbing.

You are the only nation full-time complaining, why ???

You fill your mouth of words like: respect, tolerance, integration, and in Europe you only talk about British interest.

Don't be parasites, forget your ugly weather and mood, be a little optimistic.

Android 'stands on Microsoft's shoulders', says MS lawyer

Gian

ah aha ... so it means that the Linux developers wait eagerly that some wonderful idea is filed as patent by MS (ah no, he said no ideas, way to implement, that is) , and then translate in Linux code.

That's it?

Well, in windows 8, Metro interface, there are many ideas coming from Android: the multitasking without any close command; the separation of OS and apps, so you can change OS without reinstalling evrything, and so on

madness n.2

all these companies are MS partners! They all build PSs & windowsphones.

So this is a suicidal way to mantain the relationships with your partners, I guess there is a scheme in which they can redeem the payments if they build more MS crap.

madness

I remember Bill Gates complaining against the patents in the '80, he copied everything: excel from lotus, windows from xerox, pocketpc from palm.

Dos & windows were a success because people copied PC from IBM.

The basis of IP (it's called Paris Convention) states that a patent should be granted only to a REAL INVENTIVE STEP : all the patents they are quarreling nowadays are so stupid and obvious that NEVER should have been awarded

You can install GNOME if you like.....

Guys, don't get so nervous; if you want you can just install gnome from Software Center. I'm doing this now.

Actually, when I heard about Unity, some months ago, I installed it on 10.10 and used both.

Hope this can cure the nostalgia, no need to change distro.

... Nokia

Nokia tempted an evolutionary path to his mobile OS, I don't even remember the name

Gian
Happy

I'm very excited with this upgrade, instead!

Yes, I can say that I already imagined this exact solution for the following reasons:

- Gnome evolved very wildly adding inconsistently the functionalities of windows, mac, motif. etc. : so you had all sorts of widget, icons, menus, at the 4 corners of the screen. A mess.

- X-window is an old wrack: it was created for the '80 tech, when client & server where fisically detached and connected via ethernet, nowadays we're running C&S on the same machine, with a lot of message passing. This is evident in the lag (and hangs) of the windows, with killed windows that leave the client app running. Obsolete.

- After spending more and more time with my wonderful Android phone, I really feel the need of a touchscreen on my laptop. But all current window managers are built for the mouse. Unity was designed with this destiny: being finger friendly.

So I can understand only those of you IT manager, that maybe have still many windows 98 installed, who face the nightmare of organize training.

Evolutionary wise it's the way to go.

Apple sues Samsung over Galaxy look-and-feel

Gian

honestly

I found too the galaxy body too much an imitation of the iphone 3, worse so of an outdated model, that's why I didnt consider it. And gave more prestige of the apple brand.

But also I found the ip4 an imitation of my REALLY OUTDATED eten x500+, and so on...

IP = intellectual property legislation should strongly limited in scope and time; patents should be issued only on outstanding inventive steps

Why Microsoft is Acorn and Symbian is the new CP/M

Gian

Microsoft today is the '80 IBM

Your parallels fit very well, for most of them I had the same thoughts.

I would add that all no-US efforts were destined to oblivion, because.. that's it! With the beautiful exception of ARM, that now beats at the hart of all our phones.

And remember the IBM at that time: THE EMPIRE.

It was reknown that for every shit IBM pops out, evrybody goes buying it.

It reminds me of MS today; even the recent huge lineup of WM7 is similar to the launch of PS/2 system PCs (1987?).

Is was intended to regain market from the sea of compatible boxes (think of the ocean of Android marks of today and tomorrow) with more strict intellectual property (think of the suits against HTC & MOTO).

Still today the IP regulation is so clippled that the suer (MS) is robbing from Android the idea of integrating the phone with its online services: HOtmail, BIng...

Gian

1/2 Right

on the common Hw & Sw base that enabled many consumer electronics brands jump on the micro market you're half right.

But indeed was only marketing, inside the machines where just a shallow imitation of C64, without its huge sw library, and without any innovation path.

Apple accuses HTC of iPhone tech theft (again)

IPO

guys, the Paris convention, the basis of all world patents states that:

1. a patent must be NEW

2. MUST SHOW AN INVENTIVE STEP (not be obvious..)

3. be reproducible

-> all patent offices forget that and grant evrithing to evryone

also, Computer Programs can NOT be patented, but this is a method
