There are loads of industrial things, e.g. touchscreens, running CE. I wonder if the system designers knew how MS was going to leave them in the lurch when they adopted it?

Capital gets trendy address: .London on its way

As far as I can see it is a superb method of filtering. By avoiding anyone with a .london name I can stripout all the self-important, opinionated, tosspots at a stroke.

Cancellation technique doubles wireless throughput

Robert E A Harvey

doubtful

Every local reflection of the transmitted signal is going to add another copy at another phase that will want subtracting.

And the front end is going to have to remain linear over a huge dynamic range to avoid intermodulation (mixing) with arbitrary phase products.

It still sounds to me like something you can get working on a bench, but not in real life.

(Although I do believe some of the satellite-pirate phones do this, albeit with a very controlled signal path (no multipath, no local reflections) and a stable loss budget, to steal access in the guard bands)

Facebook deletes hacked Pages, destroying years of work

Robert E A Harvey

yes, and Yes. And yes.

"use it to engage" - absolutely. Clever exploitation of a new niche

"depend solely upon it" - stupid idea, giving control of your business method to someone over whom you have no contractual control.

Robert E A Harvey

"He needs to put his hand in his pocket."

Yes.

But that is how he got into this problem in the first place, isn't it? Not putting his hand in his pocket.

Robert E A Harvey

Yes, But

The right way to use Farcebuk is to use it grab your customers and funnel them to a web site. If necessary, feed and cater for them there, with daily content changes, webcams, feedback forums, special offers.

Dong business on the cheap

I have little sympathy.

If someone's business model is to freeload around the media space, and depend upon the cybergypsies they pick up along the way, then the old biblical tale of building a house on sand sounds like a far better planned arrangement.

Look, cheapskates, there is a reason that hosted web sites and web designers cost money: they are a proper way to do business. The electronic equivalent of flyposting is not.

re: Why not integrate Bluetooth headset into pen?

Why not? There is a long tradition of sticking a pencil behind yer ear.

Or of the Man from Uncle talking into his pen.

Robert E A Harvey
Happy

The market for this is who exactly?

Well, me perhaps.

I like the bluetooth headset idea (why isn't it integrated and sold with it?).

I like the stylus idea.

I could use it as a super notepad for working on things, and making notes as I go, photographing serial numbers and writing down test results.

It would make a fantastic satnav for those of us oldies who take a long time to change focus from infinity to tiny writing on the autobahn, especially at night.

TomTom fights falling satnav sales with iPad app

Robert E A Harvey

@JohnG: on WP7?

AIUI the Navigon WP7 app is still only 'promised'; iGo myway's web site talks only about the iPhone. Trafficmaster's website says it will be available soon on WM6.1, so that's not too promising either.

I doubt that the correct response to TomTom ignoring WP7 is to change both yer software and yer phone.

Bury council defends iPads for binmen

Robert E A Harvey

No

Yes, there is a landfil tax.

But the hole in the ground is usually owned by some faceless company who will charge for that too.

I am afraid councils pay quite a lot for landfill.

Robert E A Harvey

We have RFID on our bins. The council were going to weigh and charge until there was a stink about the idea, then they said they were not going to use the RFID.

However when one bloke took his tags out and posted them to the chief executive, the council stopped collecting his bins in a fit of overzealous pique. Look up "Brynley Heaven" on the FWSE
