Eee PC Girl

Why, may I ask, is there no photo in this article which clearly relates to the Eee PC??

Italian court rules against HP on pre-installed Windows

What!?

What a farce!

If a manufacturer decides that they wish to sell something as a bundle only then why should they be forced to break that into its components? You wouldn't buy a car and then demand a refund on the stereo because you were going to put your own stereo in!

Its not like HP have a monopoly on computers and I cannot believe that the customer did not know in advance that the computer would come with Windows and Works. This clearly shows that the court has no idea what they are doing when it comes to IT related issues.

It may not be to everyone's taste to have Microsoft on their system but if you don't want a computer with Microsoft software then don't buy a bundle which includes Microsoft Software, build it yourself if you have to - its not brain surgery! And if you are going to tell me that its more expensive that way then you've gotten a good deal going through a company bundling Microsoft Software - just take the software off

Florida man faces trial for feeding homeless

Alex Barlow

@About time...

I don't know if you were joking but I must say that completely overlooks the little minor part of the situation where some people aren't on the street because they are lazy!

If everyone took your stance and gave money to homeless charities then it wouldn't be an issue, but until then...

Something Wrong

It just makes me feel like there is something wrong with the world when I see headlines like 'Man Faces Trial for Feeding Homeless'. If the state is unwilling or unable to provide for everyone then they shouldn't be stopping people from helping them of their own volition.

I guess this is just another example of the haves trying to purge the have-nots from their vicinity.

US teacher fired for non-literal bible reading

Sad

It saddens me to see how much hatred towards Christians has come out in this comments section. I somehow feel that there would be a much bigger outcry if there were hundreds of posts all reading 'All Muslims are totally stupid backwards terrorists' rather than 'All Christians are stupid backwards loonies'.

I always believed that we lived in a society where we respected that we each hold our beliefs even if we didn't share them. By the tone of most of these people who seem to like to think of themselves as the absolute voice of truth and denouncing all those who disagree, it seems that they are as bad as the people whom they accuse of intolerance and forcing their beliefs on others. Hypocritical no..?

Genghis Khan didn't much like gays

Alex Barlow

Levitical Law

Surely Levitical Law dates back around 4 thousand years so, unless I'm making a prat of myself and my brief research to confirm this was wrong, Mr Khan was about three and a half thousand years late on the claim of being the first to have laws against homosexuality.

TorrentSpy shuts doors to America

Alex Barlow

@Just a reminder

Well actually they are providing what is basically the definition for how to acquire the illegal content.

It is essentially the same as letting someone deal illegal drugs in your house. You have provided the location for a crime to be committed so you are a part of the crime. They are pretty directly enabling you to have access to illegal content.

Stopping illegal torrents from being hosted is not stopping free speech, at least not in a bad way - do you think it should be illegal to stir up racial hatred? Or is that infringing your 'human rights'? Should it be illegal for a website to show you how to acquire child pornography, another example of illegal content.

For the record I am not from the US.

Alex Barlow

Just a reminder

I know we don't like to say it but redistribution of copyrighted material without the copyright owners permission is illegal.

If TorrentSpy are or were distributing such material (and lets not be coy, we all know what is typically downloaded from file sharing services) in the USA then that gives the USA the right to want know who in the USA is involved in the crime. Surely TorrentSpy, as a good law abiding company, would be only too keen to help rid themselves of criminal activity on their website.

Or maybe is that not how things work round here...perhaps accusing people of pick'n'mix law only works one way?

TorrentSpy filters pirated videos

Alex Barlow

A good idea

*Rant Ahead* :)

Sorry to spoil the party here. But as a former user of TorrentSpy and BitTorrent I think that it is good that copyright controls are being placed on these sites. Any arguments in favour of breaking the law seem fairly null. If you don't think that what you are downloading is worth paying for then why download it?

If you want to watch lots of films then why not just get a video rental service? If you want to listen to lots of music. Why not use Napster or web radio, or even normal radio. Such things are cheap, and radio is free. Then again Napster is another touchy subject isn't it? 'Its our right to decrypt the DRM so we can keep it forever because this is fair use'. No it isn't! They told you the restrictions in advance, so if you didn't accept the terms!

*End Of Rant*

On the other hand I do strongly disagree with the copy protection on CDs and DVDs which are designed to stop you putting films on a private streaming server or copying a CD into your music library.

CD WOW! vows to take £35m High Court defeat to Europe

Missing the point

Am I just missing the point or is it an irrelevant point that 'The vibrancy of British music depends on a fair return on the investments that allow British talent to shine'? Are the artists not making the same money wherever we buy it from, seeing as the higher cost in the UK is just inflation of the price by the shop to make more profit. If someone can afford to sell it cheaper and still make a profit then that's just business and can only serve as a wake up call to the UK stores that they need to do something to stay in the market.

If we woke up to the fact that we live in a globalised society and can demand more from companies who are clearly price fixing then things may actually change. Sadly, though, until we vote with our feet nothing will change.
