Apple's big secret: It's an insurance firm (now with added finance)

Hardware as a Service

The UK "throws away" one million tonnes of electrical and electronic equipment each year and a major cause is in-built obsolescence. Anything that improves the durability, repairability and upgradability of products should be encouraged. The act of renting results in the product provider having a long term interest in keeping the asset in use. Apple has a poor record in this respect and an improvement is well over-due.

The idea of course is as old as the hills, anybody out there remember Radio Rentals - one of the shops that rented out TVs.

Call for better design

In the UK alone we throw away over 1 million tonnes of electrical & electronic equipment each year, a lot of it containing materials hazardous to the environment and human health. I am not a member of the beard and sandals brigade but surely by now designers can produce products that allow for easy battery swaps. Maybe I'm just naive in thinking built-in obsolescence can't be one of the ways that manufacturers use to sell us more - surely not.

Gods at play

Whilst the movers and shakers play their cyberspace games us poor little people suffer. Of course the internet needs policing but its about time it wasn't by self-appointed vigilantes. We use the internet for B2B marketing and were shocked to find that we could be blacklisted without any warnings and only found out via our customers. We then had to start a nightmare process of trying to find out who had made the blacklisting decision and the even more tortuous process of getting them to talk to us. This despite complying with all the known codes of conduct. It is a matter of conjecture just how many reputable companies have had their legitimate activities disrupted but logic suggests it can't be helping growth and job creation.

Sustainability gaining traction

It's fantastic to see all the comments supporting the idea of sustainability. We all know that equipment is discarded un-necessarily and a professionally refurbished machine is perfectly capable doing a good job particularly in an office environment.

I wonder how long it will be before we realise that we are running out of the raw materials required to manufacture the new kit. And while we are at it let's nail the power consumption question once and for all - the total carbon emmisions generated by a PC during it's life is made up of 80% during the manufacturing process and only 20% through power consumption.
