Re: British TV drama is NOT crap, merely rarer than hen's teeth

I am so glad to see that someone else shares my distaste for Torchwood's gayness. Especially when they converted Ianto from weird sexual taste (Cyberwoman) to weirder (Cap'n Jack).

OTOH, I have enjoyed both seasons of Sherlock (all 6 episodes!) and have recently enjoyed the complete David Tenneant years of Dr Who and am working my way through the 1st Matt Smith series.

US mulls outlawing rival product bans using standards patents

Keith Williams
FAIL

let me get this straight

These companies allowed their patents to be included in a standard, and they were included on the basis FRAND. The companies then demanded a higher license fee from certain companies and complained when they didnt get it.

If you agree to allow your patent to be included in a standard on a FRAND, you should set your royalty at a certain amount and it should be the same, and remain the same for everyone who uses that standard, no matter how deep the other pockets are.

If you are not happy with that either dont allow your patent to be included or dont whine about it afterwards.

Can neighbours grab your sensitive package, asks Post Office

Keith Williams

I am amazed at how far behind the times the UK is.

I dont think Canada Post has any dedicated post offices anymore, they've contracted it out. It's hard enough to find a mailbox to post a letter. However, pretty much every standalone pharmacy has a Canada Post outlet, many with delivery boxes for rent so you can use them as your mailing address. Each of them is generally open until 9pm and on Saturdays, and most of them on Sundays.

If you are not home when delivery occurs, then they leave a note which says when it will be available for pickup and where. I've never seen a line up more than 5 people long for pickup or drop off.

"After the bitter civil war in China ended in 1949, the nationalist faction retreated back to Taiwan, but no peace treaty was ever signed between the two sides and many on the Communist-ruled mainland still regards the island as their own."

Surely, by the same logic, the Island government could consider the mainland as their own as well?

The cryptographic engine is the key reason people buy RIM eqipment and this has shown that they can migrate it to a different OS.

Did anyone here hear about the G20 Thugs aka police who assaulted peaceful demonstrators in the Safe Demonstration area, and people who were standing around watching peaceful demonstrations? Yes, there were bad demonstrators dressed in black, but they were few and far between and certainly did not represent more than a tiny minority of those who were demonstrating. Cops were caught on film assaulting people and the other cops were "unable to identify them". Freedom of expression etc is fine as long as you don't piss off the authorities.

Yorks cops bust Bradford guinea pig farm

Keith Williams

Stupidity

Municipalities surrounding Vancouver are sending in Safety Inspectors to review excessive use of electricity in homes. Usually with police officers sitting outside in their police cars. if they "notice" any evidence of illegal activity they can then go outside and report this information to the police, who immediately bust the homeowner. If there is no Pot found, then the town charges the homeowner for the inspection. Upto $5200 'cost recovery' for a 1/4 hour of work.

Indications of illegal cultivation include spilled soil or fertilizer, empty rooms (it was preped to be painted for a soon-to-arrive baby) and other items.

Also, if I were a pot grower, I would keep guinea pigs in a shed, heat them excessively and after the cops came and vetted the place, switch to growing pot.

Apple 'cans restocking fees'

Keith Williams
Boffin

restocking fees

An acquaintance of mine was the manager of a Vancouver outlet for a major electronics retailer. Two of his biggest complaints were "buyers' remorse" whereby the customer bought an expensive item, took it home and either his wife forced him to return it, "you spent how much on that?" or he realized that he had indeed spent too much on the item. The second was purchases of GPS units on Friday, followed by their return on Monday. Restocking fees, which the Owner refused to contemplate, would have gone a long way to eliminate these behaviours.

Many places judge the intention rather than the fact. In Canada it is unlawful for someone to depict someone underage in porn, even if the person doing the depiction is over the age of consent. If a reasonable person were to view the image and come to a reasonable belief in it's accuracy, that is all that counts.

Herts cops 'ate the evidence' at scene of crime, court told

Keith Williams

Not sure what evidence the pizza was

Reading the article, I fail to see what evidence the Pizza order represented. The police arrived at the suspect's home - not the site of the crime, so they already knew he lived there. The pizza was of no use proving that he actually lived there. The suspect had already decamped, so the pizza supplied no information as to his present whereabouts. So what's the point?

Re: Doesn't that cut both ways?

I think that you are misinterpreting Lewis's point - if the point of buying A400Ms is to avoid dependency on supplies of American parts for the Boeing aircraft, then this is a fail because there is so much American content in the A400Ms. Additionally, those American parts are subject to American Export controls - which will limit the foreign governments that the aircraft can be sold to.
