No connection other than as a satisfied customer.

No surprise that Worst all is being highly selective here.

The Nobel Prize committee is not endorsing this particular research as "right" in the same way it does for other disciplines. After all, a couple of years ago something that is essentially the opposite of this also received the prize.

The Nobel prize for economics is about recognising research that is worthy, not what is right.

It wont be easy

Wasnt Box the name of the talking handheld computer used by Commander Nathan Spring in StarCops?

UK mulls ban on tiny mobiles to block prison smugglers

John Ruddy

What about the obvious?

Why dont they just block mobile signals within the prison grounds? Surely thats easier?

Or do they want to make sure the prison guards can all stay on twitter?

Possessed baby monitor shouts obscenities at Texas tot

The facts on Trident 'cuts': What the Lib Dems want is disarmament

John Ruddy

Well, it was an interesting article, apart from the fact it didnt discuss the real question - what is our nuclear force actually for?

The question over trident, and its replacement, is not how big it should be, but what do we need it to do?

Th threats this country faces now, and in the foreseeable future are not necessarily best met with by a Trident-type nuclear force. Trident was designed to deal with a Soviet Union hell bent on our destruction. That threat has gone, in so much as it ever existed. (they'd have used salami tactics in any case).

In 1990, I was looking at using Minix.... it looked like a cheap way to improve my unix skills, and the ability to play around with the OS internals looked fun.

BT and O2 ink deal to build mega 4G network

John Ruddy
Thumb Up

I wonder if it was related to the way the auction was structured. If O2 had bid for all the spectrum itself, it a) might not have won as much, and b) might have paid more overall.

Virgin Media revs up for Liberty Global merger

John Ruddy
FAIL

Any concrete figures on how much Virgin Media pays Virgin Group for the use of the "brand"? I was told it was 10% of revenue, making a nifty little £100m tax-free earner for Beardie.

If I was Liberty the first thing I would do is change the name (get away from all that bad publicity) and operate under the name Liberty ("Liberty gives you unlimited broadband" etc - the marketing opportunities are endless), and save a shed load of cash with which I can invest in the company.

Review: NetAtmo Urban Weather Station

John Ruddy
FAIL

I'm not sure how accurate the outdoor sensor can be, if you have to keep it in a shed (or worse a greenhouse????) to keep it dry? What its actually doing is recording the temperature and humidity in the shed or in the greenhouse - not outdoors.

Plus, surely the point of any of these home weather stations is to provide a forecast? It should be relatively easy to see from a a drop in pressure and an increase in humidity that its likely to rain etc...

Operators look on in horror as Facebook takes mobe users Home

Can we hear more about France Telecom's attempt to get a mobile phone to fly a 747?

Freeview telly test suggests 4G interference may not be a big deal

John Ruddy
Devil

So let me get this right... a study funded my the mobile operators finds that mobile operators dont need to spend lots of money of fixing things, because slightly fewer than expected people were affected in a very limited trial in one area only?

So thats OK then.

ANCIENT CURSED RING known to TOLKIEN goes on display

John Ruddy
Stop

Re: simply a handy tool

In the first edition of the Hobbit, it is just that - an ordinary magic ring which makes the wearer invisible.

Tolkien revised the Hobbit while he was writing LotR (I believe it's called retconning now) so that the ring took on more sinister aspects - which were revealed in LotR.

Not got 4G? There's a reason we aren't called 'Four', sniffs Three

Cable Cowboy lassoes Virgin Media with HUGE £15bn deal

John Ruddy
FAIL

Re: TV Advert

To be honest, I'm not sure why. Apprently it costs them 10% as a royalty for the Virgin brand (which is paid to a Geneva based subsidary of Virgin Group, and therefore attracts no tax).

Dump the brand, re-launch as something new and fresh (even Liberty would work well from that point of view) and attract new customers. If nothing else you've added 10% to the media company's bottom line.

Bubble baron treats Space Station crew to blowup model

Nothing New

This sort of development has been in many a science fiction story. However, the big question is what about when the module is hit by something? Much more likle some space debris, rather than a micro-meteor

TalkTalk Q1 sales fall as number of broadband punters declines

John Ruddy
Thumb Down

Their retentions department have been working overtime too. Every day for the last month, their Indian call centre has been calling home in order to speak to me about signing up for a new 24 month contract. However, every day my wife has told them that I am at work, could they call back later. No, they say, we need to speak to the account holder.... and then call back at the same time next day.

Surprisingly, since the weekend the broadband has been shit, offline for several hours at a time etc. They've stopped calling.

I'm off to BT or Plusnet....anyone...

Standard Government response in a time of crisis

Say that nothing is going to happen;

Say something maybe going to happen, but we should do nothing about it;

Say maybe we should do something about it, but there is nothing we can do;

Say maybe there was something we could have done, but it is too late now.

I leave the reader to estimate which stage we are at now.

Virgin Galactic announces test flight plans

John Ruddy
FAIL

Boring

Lets face it, theres a reason why sub-orbital has been abandoned for four decades - its Boring! You're only up there for a few minutes, and its only really useful as a way of testing kit before subesquent use in LEO.

I suspect the delays n Virgin Galatactic are either only to get more publicity for their over-priced hop in a souped up vomit comet or because, like most Virgin projects, its not working properly.

Now if it was 250k for a ticket to an orbital flight....

Ofcom squeezes local TV into 20 cities' tight White Spaces

Domesday Book put on touchscreen at Bletchley Park

John Ruddy
Headmaster

The book was designed as a record of land holdings at the time (1086) and at the Conquest (although the Normans being Normans, and not recognising Harold as a legitimate king, called in "at the time of Kinf Edward").

Should any dispute arise, then reference to the book would settle your doom (as in fate).

It wasnt about the end of the world.

Apple cofounder Steve Jobs is dead at 56

John Ruddy
Unhappy

I am surprised to hear that he was married and had children - I guess I always pictured him as a loner, fighting against the world of Microsoft.

My condolences go to his family, 56 is not an age to die, especially not in this day and age.
