Vodafone slings sueball at Dutch telco alleging anti-competitive conduct

Richard Bijster
Stop

I think you'll find that KPN never invested billions over 50 years. It was actually the Dutch taxpayer that invested billions over 50 years. After all that public investment the PTT was privatised, or rather sold off on the cheap, just like British Telecom. So, your assumption that KPN as a private company invested billions of Euros over 50 years plus to set up their own infrastructure (plus staff, training, vans etc.) is completely wrong. The current set up gives KPN a very unfair advantage in the market, an unfair advantage that it has been abusing for years here in The Netherlands. KPN's position in The Netherlands can be directly compared to BT Openreach's abuse of its position in the UK market.

Bigger than Twitter: Opera releases rebuilt Chromium-based browser

Richard Bijster
WTF?

Opera's browser for Fisher Price's "My First Computer"

Opera 15 - the browser Opera seems to have developed for Fisher Price's "My First Computer". If this is the direction Opera is going in, I'm off. After using Opera since 2001 this is the final straw. Where are the damn bookmarks? Where is the customisation I'm used to? Where is my password button?, Where can I fill in my personal info for quick form filling? What if I don't want Big Brother Google and the NSA as a search engine? etc, etc... Oh wait, it's all been stripped out so stupid people can use it easily.

If this is Opera 15, Opera can kiss its ever dwindeling market share goodbye Opera. This is the bigggest insult Opera has ever served up to all its faithful power users. Let's face it, once you loose market share these days, you don't get it back.

A hopeless, dumbed down browser for the dumbed down big brother likes watchng you age. How sad, it all used to be so diferent. Security? Who cares these days?

Re: How to lose the trust of your current customers

Before an iPhone 3G. I was able to upgrade its OS for about 2 years after getting it. With the Windows Phone that's not the case. All fair and well MS bringing out an updated OS, however, it should not mean EVERY single handset that they have their current 7.5 OS on becomes non-upgradeable within a few months of buying it. So it's F-off Microsoft when I renew my contract with T-Mobile here in Holland. It's certainly not way to build any sort of trust with current customers. They have already lost one potential upgrader to Windows Phone 8 and I suspect that I'm by no means alone.

How to lose the trust of your current customers

I have an HTC Radar, I only bought it a few months ago. I am furious about it not being able to be upgraded to Windows Phone 8 when it comes out. What that means for Microsoft is this: I will not buy another Windows Phone or recommend others to buy one as I feel totally ripped off.

I can only assume that there are many other Windows Phone users who feel the same as I do. Windows Phone 8 means MS starting all over again in the mobile market. The minuscule market share they have built up with Windows Phone 7.5 will evaporate before their eyes. Windows Phone, as far as I am concerned, deserves to completely fail in the marketplace because of this no upgrade possibility on all current handsets to Windows 8. If this was made clear to me before buying, I would never have switched to a Windows Phone.

Fool me once Microsoft and you've now lost me as a customer forever.

Intel to target TV viewers with facial recognition ad tech

Richard Bijster
Big Brother

Sell your soul...

"facial recognition of the viewer, including their age and gender." So.we'll now have cameras watching us in the living room, or in any room you choose to use such a 'service' in. The Orwellian telescreen will get a huge update with this being introduced. They know that you know you want it.

From Orwell's 1984:

"The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live -- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinised"

Facebook needs Opera - to rescue it from dependence on Apple

Goodbye Opera from my OS in that case

I've been using Opera for about 10 years, If Facebook take over Opera I will immediately be removing the Opera/ Facebook spyware from my operating system. The reason for me using Opera is that it is not affiliated with companies that think they have the right to suck up all the personal information about web browsing habits. F-off Zuckerburg you 'aint getting your hands on my data.

Iran threatens to chuck sueball at Google over missing gulf

Richard Bijster

Google silliness

The International Hydrographic Organization refers to the gulf as the "Gulf of Iran (Persian Gulf)", and defines its southern limit as "The Northwestern limit of Gulf of Oman". This limit is defined as "A line joining Ràs Limah (25°57'N) on the coast of Arabia and Ràs al Kuh (25°48'N) on the coast of Iran (Persia)". It is not and never has been called the Arabian Gulf. Not naming it at all on Google Earth is simply ridiculous by Google.

One way to completely misuse facebook users. I'll be quite surprised if this doesn't get people to stop using it in droves. Then again, your average pleb will no doubt think it great to see there face endorising Facebook advertisers tat. Their face next to the sh*t they've clicked 'Like' on. How they can call it 'sponsored' when the user has no opt out strikes me as highly dubuious. It'll be great for employers when checking on candidates. "You've sponsored our competition on FB, we won't be offering you the job."

Ballmer disses Android as cheap and complex

Richard Bijster
Happy

I've changed from an iPhone to an HTC Radar - no regrets.

After having an iPhone for several years, I decided it was time for a change and went for an HTC Radar Windows Phone. I have been using it every day for about a week now. As an actual user of a phone running Windows Phone Mango, I can only say that it is a very nice operating system, in which social media is exceptionally well integrated (all under one Tile updates from Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Windows Live & Google). The phone has not dropped one call. Getting used to Zune is simple and synchronisation of my HTC Radar in Zune is far quicker than my last iPhone synching with iTunes. So far, I have not come across any annoying bugs. The OS just seems to work and it works well.

I can only say that that my experience of using WIndows Phone Mango in the real world has only been positive. I'm not going to bash the iPhone in any way here, as my experience with iOS was also positive but I was simply getting bored with looking at the same old operating system and fancied a change.

Whether Windows Phone will now actually take off is yet to be seem. From using it daily, I can't see any reason for it not to. As for Android, I have no experience of using it and can't comment. I have no problems in recommending Windows Phone Mango as a nice, well thought out and reliable OS. I certainly have no regrets about changing from my iPhone to a Window Phone. Then again, maybe I'm no so prejudiced as the majority of posters here.

News of the World TO CLOSE

Diversionary tactic to achieve the bigger goal

News Internationals argument will now turn into 'look how responsible we are; we shut the whole paper for you. We've proven ourselves to be really responsible over his issue, so we deserve to take over 100% of BSkyB'.

Problem solved for the politicians and News International. The status quo returns . Let the public think that they have won a great victory. Unfortunately the British public will lose the larger battle in September. The media world will have moved on by then.

It's a nice diversion tactic from 'look what the NOTW actually did to get shut down and who authorised it all'.

There have undoubtedly been back door discussions with No.10 going on. The government would also like this issue to go away. Murdoch has only shut the NOTW to safeguard his 100% takeover of BSKyB in September. A case of 'it'll all have died down by that time'. Cameron is in News Internationals back pocket and still will be in Sept. .

Fukushima scaremongers becoming increasingly desperate

Richard Bijster

Don't worry Lewis knows everything.

According to Lewis you are a scaremonger. None of what you say matters, nothing the Japanese govt. says matters, the Japanese power company Tokyo Electric Power Co must be believed at all times as it always tells the truth. Lewis knows everything that is going on at Fukushima, even more so than those trying to sort out the disaster, or 'small irrelevant mishap' as Lewis would probably call it A semi-meltdown is not a serious issue for Japan, China, any other country in the area or any ecosystems. Massive radiation levels now being reported must all be lies and based on scurrilous gossip and scaremongering. Nuclear power is safe as houses. Lewis is the God of nuclear energy, knowing more than any expert on the ground at Fukushima or on the entire planet. Funny that he still hasn't caught the first flight to go and pitch his tent in the exclusion zone yet. I wonder why? Could he be scared to stay around the plant without any protection for a few weeks?

Fukushima situation as of Wednesday

Richard Bijster
Stop

Get rid of this joker Lewis and his nonsense reporting

"So far from Fukushima proving that nuclear power is dangerous compared to other technologies, it seems to be proving quite the reverse. "

I think most of us are getting tired of this bullshit nonsense from Lewis. Maybe Lewis should get the next flight to Fukushima and pitch a tent right next to the 4 reactors located there. Seeing as it's all so safe, he can give us live updates as this disaster contines to unfold right from the centre of the 'safe as houses' disaster. Again, he comes to the above conclusion when it's still not clear how things are going to eventually unfold. With the current ploy of dumping water from the air, it's obvious that desperation has started to set in.

Here's some up-to-date 'positive' news about safe nuclear power generation when it all goes wrong:

Fukushima No. 1 plant

-- Reactor No. 1 - Suspended after quake, cooling failure, partial melting of core, vapor vented, building damaged Saturday by hydrogen explosion, seawater being pumped in.

-- Reactor No. 2 - Suspended after quake, cooling failure, seawater being pumped in, fuel rods fully exposed temporarily, vapor vented, building housing reactor damaged Monday by blast at reactor No. 3, damage to containment vessel on Tuesday, potential meltdown feared.

-- Reactor No. 3 - Suspended after quake, cooling failure, partial melting of core feared, vapor vented, seawater being pumped in, building housing reactor damaged Monday by hydrogen explosion, high-level radiation measured nearby on Tuesday, plume of smoke observed Wednesday, damage to containment vessel likely.

-- Reactor No. 4 - Under maintenance when quake struck, fire Tuesday possibly caused by hydrogen explosion at pool holding spent fuel rods, abnormal temperature rise in spent-fuel storage pool but water level not observed, fire observed Wednesday at building housing reactor, no water poured in to cool pool, spraying of boric acid being considered.

A shameful article, especially after the new blast

Looks as though the suppression tank is damaged. Workers being evacuated from the site as I type. A very evasive press conference from Tokyo Electric on NHK World now. Probably game over.

This article is in poor taste and was published before this dreadful nuclear drama played itself out fully. Not an article The Register should be proud of publishing. Irresponsible and shows no care for any of the dead and grieving families in Japan.
