Re: Raging River

Well, I always suggest killing the most hated Dave or Debbie(Slagathor if either one is really called like that), using their entrails to build a trebuchet or catapult(whatever is fancied) and then pling everything over to the other side, head to the winchester for a cold pint, and wait for this whole thing to blow over.

Re: Whose worst nightmare? Samsung's! Not Apple's.

Well, it is generally considered to be a place where some sort of continued civilization has occurred, even though it has seen plenty of power switches(much like ye old Mesopotamia). Another contender for one of the oldest civilizations is Egypt, which has also seen a continued existence of a society much with the same genetic makeup.

All in all, it's a silly/stupid statement that has not much merit from a historical perspective and generally paints with a extremely overtly big brush.

Bit hazy on the details, but isnt it just delisting of the news websites in news.google? I can still happily find them by a normal google search.

What baffles me more is that if users find google's offering so useful, why havent the news agencies made their own offering? Seems like a winner to me if properly executed.

And on the 'blackmail' part, you cant expect to force a website to list you, and pay you for the honour if they wouldnt want to? I understand the monopoly google has but dont these laws affect all search websites?

All in all, I dont really get the problem.

AWACS are indeed the backupplan, although there should always be a active secondary cover airborne, might be the replacement ships.

No, you have secondary radar and control systems(part militairy) that can take over in a emergency. Not sure what is going on right now but it might be more then just a power failure.

I remember reading about a software error that caused the reported altitude to be wrong in a piece of software for the ATC, I think that was in San Francisco.

pepper

Re: Let me guess: "Hello, World!"

Alright, but that is a archaic technology not really being used on a day to day basis anymore, atleast not in direct interaction for most people, and it's more in the domain of the Electrical Engineer then a programmer/coder that would possible design a interface or a website. It's a wide field nowadays, nothing like it was in its beginning, and yes I understand the value of going back to basics but its not a good introduction at all.

You dont teach people to fly by throwing them off hills in the old gliders or the wright flyer, we have passed that stage no matter how interesting it might be.

It did cross my mind but I would have expected this gentlemen to swerve into me the first oppertunity he got. When he passed me it was obvious that he also wasnt paying the attention he should to maintaining control of his vehicle.

In retrospect, I should have flipped him off after he started flashing his lights(which is illegal where I live). But oh well, better let him trundle off and wait behind the other traffic just ahead.

pepper

Re: I just can't be arsed anymore!

Aye, I do that as well, and I've noticed that speeding doesnt yield me any time advantage anyway.

Just today some plonker was hugging my tail and flashing his lights because in his opinion I obviously wasnt overtaking the traffic quick enough, even though I was doing 125KM/H and overtaking lorries that were doing 90KM/H... Then again he could have overtaken me earlier and was probably miffed that he didnt do it. In retrospect I should have shown him the finger.

Also, I could still see him ahead of me 4 minutes later...

Owning a plane isnt that expensive, and if you enjoy flying a N amount of hours a year then it already quickly evens out compared to renting. I even know some people that got the certification required to do their own maintenance on their aircraft cutting the costs even more.

Re: Gaining hardware but losing software = losing market share?

Steve, yes it works on IOS 7 but that is not available for the iPhone 3GS, sort of frustrating since it's still a working device.

pepper

Re: Gaining hardware but losing software = losing market share?

Steve, the Podcast feature from the music player that could update and track podcasts is gone in the 6.18 IOS Software. I was a bit puzzled when I wanted to subscribe to podcasts but the device wouldnt allow me(even though all sorts of guides told me I could). This was on a iPhone 3GS. Turns out that Apple seperated the Podcast software from the Music Player, fair enough... Well no, turns out you can only install that on 4S versions and up(IOS 7+), effectively removing features from older models. I came across a few other instances of this as well. Add to that no good free software for podcasts for IOS 6 and well, it's just looking extremely shoddy.

Re: Few questions

Not sure the Nexus 4 has those, havent seen the fingerprint bollocks on any phone at all really. Most android flagship phones of last year did already have all of those features though, not sure the camera things are such a big deal, it looks more like marketing speak. If you do enjoy good camera's you can always check the HTC or Nokia phones, they are lovely.

We got sensors like that where I work, when in the storage room behind a shelve it will turn off(badly placed sensor), so people always jam the door open with a fire extinguisher so that there is atleast light coming in. We also got a similair sensor in the riveting box that doesnt trigger if you are at the far end so it all goes black...

Well, the F-16's are useless in a carrier configuration, the airframe is not build for it(One does not simply strengthen a airframe). The Arrestor is more a experimental emergency braking system next to the parachute system. Its not advisable to use it if you want to avoid lengthy inspections.

@ Evan Essence

Not sure, did a quick search for his Open Data User Group, but it doesnt really exist on wikipedia(the link to it does...). I get a feeling its a recent rebranding of something else.

http://data.gov.uk/odug

https://www.gov.uk/government/groups/129

http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Open-Data-User-Group-4367612

This whole Open Data User Group really just looks like a front for companies to siphon off private data, it appears to be under control of companies and doesnt really have any 'user' interest groups at hand, the british equivalent of the EFF/Bit for Freedom etc.

Dodgy all around really, if I wouldnt know better I would scream scam from the top of my lungs.

EDIT: There is a certain irony in his request for El Reg to "Please engage with the Open Data User Group for a balances view". Looks like his group himself never attempted any such thing!
