Re: @Titter
Deep dish is actually akin to a quiche, a french dish, so suited for less subtile barbarians.

It has many times been said that he sought asylum because he feared extradition to the US. Ignoring that point and instead suggesting he has something to hide. in spite of the fact that he has not been accused, and the original accuser has withdrawn the statement, is malevolent and intentional. Is it that hard to even imagine the possibility that he didn't do it? Shame on you.
Maybe the risk of a network outage is as costly as you claim to that company, but the risks of on-premise data storage and computing are also considerable. Not long from now that same insurer will demand draconic and auditable standardized measures to be taken on your 'own' systems to even consider giving you coverage. That will make the comparison more balanced I expect, even without the already high costs of local solutions.
As I understood it they had the bug reported (and a patch available) for 3 weeks before 15 oct but postponed release because they didn't want to burden those partaking in a Drupal conference somewhere (?). So the vuln was known for 3 weeks, then they published it and again waited 3 weeks to recommend to reload a full site backup from 3 weeks ago if you didn't patch within 7 hours after publication.
I'm only a small-time sitebuilder and -maintainer but this is not going to work for most people.
As someone else stated, Apple does not have a lot of experience in the smartphone business. They built only some 6 different models, that weren't even that different and all about the same size. Other companies publish different models by the month or week even, totalling multiple 10's or even 100's of models in recent years. And all these models are field tested; Apple does no field tests because they are so secretive about their precious new iPhad.
My clients wouldn't be pleased at all if I suggested that they get even further entangled in the MS jungle. Most of them are trying hard to get rid of them asap.
Why would you use Azure with its obvious attempts to lock you into the Windows world, when that world is already crumbling AND there are so much better alternatives in the open source world.
Are you guys masochists? Why are you submitting to this insulting nonsense.
You know how I update from Xubuntu 12.04 to 12.10? I click a button a go to work again. I can also avoid the buttonclicking if I'm really busy and do this on 500 machines at the same time, with one of them as a cache server. And no one loses a minute of worktime or stresspoints.
Totally ridiculous. Microsoft is holding back the human race and deserves to die.
They still may have the game in businesses but they are doing their best to get rid of that as well. What's with the sudden price increases that punish those that stayed loyal? And how about even more complicated licensing structures that even M$ themselves doesn't understand, at the same time as sending new BSA extortion letters to the confused IT managers?
No better time than now to move away from this bully and reposess your own IT.
I'm really glad Micro$soft takes this firm stance because it finally shows how little they understand their customers.
It's not that the small-shop 'IT-managers' do not want to upgrade, they don't know where to start. It should be M$'s responsibility to build upgradepaths and -tools and make it totally easy to do it. Instead they rely on their clients to hire their OEM/consultants and pay an extra $500 per workplace to get it done.
I think many of these will be very pissed of by being let in the cold again and from my experience a lot have finally decided to move away from the Redmond mobsters.
Thanks, that looks like a reasonables planning script.
Have to say though that migrating to Linux would have been just as 'easy' if not easier.
Point 6 could also be to push the suplliers to move to the web and become agnostic.
First thing in that scenario would be to get rid of the Exchange/Outlook monster by moving to Google Apps.
$Nial what's you point. I have far fewer problems getting a networked printer working under Linux than I have with Windows. It just finds them and their drivers within a few seconds and I'm running.
While Windows keeps wanting the 'manufacturer disks' smh.
I don't get it: profiles in some form are standard issue on later Android versions and separate user-logins are too. What's the big deal? All 'productivity' software that is on iOS is also available or has a better clone on Android.
I really don't see how anyone can come up with the conclusion that iOS is the only option.
US government is bought and payed for by the US corporations. The US diplomatic branche around the world spends most of it's time on greasing the inroads for US corps. The NSA is just making that job easier.
BTW. How can they guarantee no industrial espionage if the raw data is shared with Israel, who has no reservations whatsoever in this regard.
Snowden: I have never spoken with, worked with, or provided any journalistic materials to the Independent. The journalists I have worked with have, at my request, been judicious and careful in ensuring that the only things disclosed are what the public should know but that does not place any person in danger. People at all levels of society up to and including the President of the United States have recognized the contribution of these careful disclosures to a necessary public debate, and we are proud of this record.
I think we see the classical confrontation between left/progressive and liberal/libertarian. I don't think Assange is a progressive perse. The distinction between left and right is what keeps the current stranglehold of the powerstructure going. And that powerstructure is threatened by Wikileaks.
Maybe Assange should be more communicative to run a party, but nonetheless I think he will have good reasons to have made the decision that led to this issue. Those reasons deserve attention as well. Although I'm an environmentalist myself, even member of the Animal Party here in NL, I can see that hunting rights are not just something to take away from people. It's about freedom and non-interference by the establishment.
Most iPhad users don'teven know what a widget is (let alone a scrollable widget). For me smartphone or tablet would be useless without them, I get nearly all my daily info without ever 'opening' an app, all info is on the desktops, updated all of the time. Of course iPhad's do not even have that, a desktop.
Even more doubting IT decision makers will start looking into open solutions after this news. Apparently MS is seriously in decline and if you are responsible for the future IT in your company you'd better start looking for alternatives soon.
Whatever goodwill was left has evaporated now.
