10nm woes, CPU supply shortages, competition from AMD... What? Sorry? Intel can't hear you over the cash register going bonkers

rav

An earnings beat from world wide layoffs.... seriously?

Intel lays off thousands world wide in order to post an earnings beat!! More to get the ax next month. Gotta keep the 1st quarter earnings upbeat!

AMD stands for Another Monetary Decline, while Apple continues to sell enough pricey kit to keep Wall Street happy

rav

Hey Shaun....

"AMD stands for Another Monetary Decline" Are you channeling the Twitterflake in the White House now? That sounds like something Trump would say.

Yay, Intel chip shortages should be over soon! Nope. Strap in, at least another quarter or two to go, say PC execs

rav

14nm is NOT a victim of 10 and 7nm expansion...

10nm fabs have already been built and have failed that is not news. Yields are in the crapper while at the same time Intel is lowering prices, margins are going to get creamed.

7nm Fabs have just broken ground a few months back and might be ready for validation the end of 2020. By the time Intel tapes out and validates any new 7nm microarchitecture AMD will be producing 4th Generation Ryzen on 5nm. Foiled Again.

Oracle goes on for 50 pages about why it thinks the Pentagon's $10bn JEDI cloud contract stinks

rav

Oracle is UNQUALIFIED

Oracle has partnered up with Microsoft in the DOD JEDI contract and they are also suing to win the award not by merit but by legal maneuvering and wrangling.

Oracle has no track record running a cloud server as big as Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure. They are not simply qualified as evidenced by their loss in the first round of bidding. Oracle has become irrelevant.

Oracle's hope is to get Amazon disqualified so the big will go to Microsoft.

China owns no IP

"China has the IP license and designs for making the previous gen CPUs in china, and can continue to make them." That is like saying that the United States owns Intel and AMD IP.

Actually "China" does NOT own any IP. The IP is firmly held by AMD inside their majority OWNERSHIP of HYGON. AMD's minority ownership of SUGON markets and sells the silicon. AMD would simply close up HYGON and walk away after destroying the masks. TSMC would continue to fab X86 Dhayana for AMD SUGON who pays royalties back to AMD.

And again "CHINA" has no fab capability. TSMC and UMC do. If they violated ANY client confidentiality regarding client IP they would be out of business.

If the Chinese Government wanted to design their own x86 cpu clone they most certainly could. It has been done many times in the past by other companies. Zhaoxin has developed an x86 clone. In fact the Russians cloned the 8080 processor years ago. ALTAIR did as well. In fact the Russians have been copying US processors for years but they are junk.

rav

Re: Why would China care about licensing

China does not need to steal IP. They can simply design their own x86 silicon. The problem is they have no fabrication outside of TSMC.

All AMD is doing is designing a zen cored cpu inside of HYGON. There is no secret recipe.

China is not interested in marketing they will be more than happy producing the same cpu as long as it is SECURE from NSA backdoors.

In the west we see cpu design as a matter of who can sell the fastest cpu; Intel or AMD. China has no such marketing scheme. They simply do not care. ALl the care about is security.

rav

IP License.

China does NOT have an AMD IP license. AMD is the majority owner of HYGON. HYGON has the right to design AMD x86 cpu's and contract for fabrication at TSMC. The silicon is then turned over to SUGON a AMD minority owned company for marketing and distribution.

The IP is firmly held by AMD.

AMD's daring new money-making strategy: Sue everyone! Mwahaha

rav

AMD Patents ARE UPHELD>.

AMD shader IP has been upheld by the US Court of Appeals.

Why does TheRegister support IP theft?

Intel GPU just suffered a major setback

rav

Asynchronous Compute Engines: IP worth fighting for.

Obviously AMD is not going to let ANYONE poach their Asynchronous Compute and Asynchronous Shader Pipeline Technology.

They certainly can not impede software emulation but we've all seen just how that has worked for NVidia.

Google the patents of G H Loh or Gabriel H Loh. He is an AMD fellow and has dozens of memory and grapics patenst co-owned by AMD. Especially patenst regarding HBM memory. And using HBM memory or stacked memory with GPU's and programmable cache.

rav

Re: Then there will be one

What you fail to understand Grasshopper, computers no longer just depend on CPU's they must have efficient and powerfull GPU's.

Without GPU's the PC, Tablet, or Smartphone is junk.

Only AMD and NVidia design and fab GPU's and Intel rather lame foray into graphics computing just demonstrates this weakness. Even the top CPU manufacturer can not get it done without NVidia patents and even then the result was laughably poor.

US JEDI military cloud network is so high-tech, bidders will have to submit their proposals by hand, on DVD

rav

DVD is pretty common for Government Proposals.

DVD's are not uncommon for US Government RFP's. When the media is handed over, a transmittal letter is generated acknowledging receipt.

The problem with uploading data is there is no person to person hand off nor is there a hard signature as a receipt.

Nvidia just can't grab a break. Revenues up, profit nearly doubles... and stock down 20%

rav

The pain is far from over for nVidia. Demand for nvidia GPU's will drop this year.

Intel’s 10nm failure is going to hit nVidia pretty hard.

Intel has already announced they will be producing 25% LESS or essentially cutting CPU shipments to the PC building sector by 2 million units in Q4 2018 in order to cover server and laptop commitments on their already overworked and obsolete 14nm process. Obviously Intel fears AMD’s EPYC market share gains in the Server and HPC space so much they treat the desktop space as a forlorn hope.

According to Digitimes and a recent piece on Tom’s Hardware “Intel Cuts CPU Shipments by 2M, Motherboard Makers May Suffer – Report” does not bode well for nVidia. If mobo makers will suffer then nVidia is going to get hammered.

If Intel is cutting shipments then NVDA is loosing sockets to put GPU's in.

nVidia attachment rates to Intel motherboards is virtually 100%. Intel is essentially reducing the possible sockets available to nVidia by 2 million units through the end of this year.

AMD Radeon attachment rates to Intel motherboards is relatively low so the decrease in Intel silicon will have zero impact. And of course the attachment rate of nVidia to AMD motherboards is extremely rare.

AMD will grab market share gains in desktops and laptops from both Intel and nVidia.

Jensen Huang could have at least warned of a miss several weeks back. Unless they had NO CLUE.

Monday: Intel touts 28-core desktop CPU. Tuesday: AMD turns Threadripper up to 32

rav

Re: Gimme speed

More cores allow you to browse, play music, use Xcel,

You are right most folks just may not need 32 threads. So what!!!! That does not keep them from wanting 32 cores!!!

Besides Intel has for years been touting their leadership with multicore performance. Now they are on the other end of that stick and some folks just do not like that!!!

rav

Re: where's the innovation?

Actually the innovation is 4 - 8 core 16 thread dies rather than a single massive and very expensive die.

The innovation is also infinity fabric. Then there will be 7nm TR3!!!

TR1 is now about $500. I expect TR2 to be released at less than $1200.

rav

Re: where's the innovation?

Not everybody is satisfied driving a Prius. Some folks do want a Maserati or Shelby Cobra.

As for me, I will build one for computer chess. I can't wait to get my hands on TR2.

Nvidia quickly kills its AMD-screwing GeForce 'partner program' amid monopoly probe threat

rav

Debranding and forcing AMD out of gaming is anti-competitive and monopolistic.

ASUS was selling BOTH Radeon and Geforce under the Republic of Gamers or ROG brand. nVidia forced ASUS to DEBRAND RADEON from ROG. Let's now see if ASUS returns RADEON to the ROG BRAND.

nVidia did not want ASUS or any other OEM to sell RADEON as a GAMING BRANDED AIB.

nVidia must think GAMERS ARE COMPLETE AND TOTAL IDIOTS if their REASON is making sure that GAMERS GET THE BRAND THEY WANT???

SERIOUSLY??? NO GREENIE FANBOY would be caught DEAD WITH RADEON!!

rav

Radio communications are not used.

I suspect that radio communication is no longer used in favor of communication through quantum coupling.

Instantaneous, unlimited range and absolutely secure. Even the internet could be distributed by quantum coupling.

Quantum coupled communications is essentially on our own horizon. Making our own radio wave detectable wavefront only 150 light years or so.

Kernel-memory-leaking Intel processor design flaw forces Linux, Windows redesign

WTF?

Is this latest Intel BUG really a surprise????

Intel is obviously cutting back on it's hardware validation procedures in their rush to put products on the market to compete with AMD Ryzen, Threadripper and EPYC processors.

As a for instance, AMD took almost 3 years to validate Ryzen and EPYC prior to launch. Intel seems to be taking less than a year.

Of course QC will suffer. In fact this bug has been known for several months.

"...what is the value of an OpenClassrooms "degree" in the US job market?"

As an American who has worked for 28 years in Architecture, Engineering and Construction I can easily state that online degrees have ZERO CREDIBILITY. And ZERO VALUE. Hiring managers simply will not take the risk.

A firm may hire a CAD drafter who was trained online but only for very basic work such as redlines and revisions. The depth of knowledge just can not be acquired online that is acquired in a traditional classroom setting that promotes interaction between peers and professors.

Online learning is in fact trying to make an autodidact of every student which is of course absurd.

A Professional Degree can not be awarded for online learning.

Would you want to live in a house designed by an Online Engineer? Or have your appendix removed by an online Doctor?

Online learning creates an a new layer of education that is trying to find a role someplace between a High School Diploma and a two year Associates degree.

One thing though is for certain. When education is "FOR PROFIT" can it really be called education?

EPYC TDP explained here. "TDP's aren't everything"

Thomas Ryan writes a good piece regarding TDP here:

http://semiaccurate.com/2017/06/20/amd-details-epycs-power-efficiency/

"From a power efficiency perspective moving data around is a great way to burn power. This is why we often see a focus on increasing cache sizes and reducing the need to physically move data around inside of modern chips. Given this point of reference one could see EPYC’s epic focus on I/O as a conscious attempt to build a chip that burns most of its Watts not on number crunching but on data movement."

"...real competition to the Intel elephant? That seems unlikely,..."

Hmmm...

...that seems unlikely?

Seriously! AMD's Zeppelin "chiplet" which is the 8 core 16 thread foundation for AMD's upcoming MCM micro-architecture and retails PACKAGED for about $445 in the Ryzen 1800x version. ANd AMD is enjoying huge yield number as well.

Intel has no answer that at all.

Zeppelin combined on an interposer is the Treadripper 16 core 32 thread beast that DELL's Alienware is releasing as it's top gaming rig come July 27 2017. Threadripperis expected to cost about $850.

Intel has no answer to that. The best it has is i7-6950x which is a paltry 10 core's and costs $1500.

Intel however promises to release i9 18 core but again it will cost $2000. i9 is a massive slab of silicon and yields will be in the loo. Intel also does not enjoy the use of certain patents by Gabriel H Loh and AMD. Google that and see. AMD has beaucoup patents for memory control and cpu + gpu and stacked memory all on an interposer. Intel has done absolutely no work with this concept.

EPYC is built from either Zeppelin or similar microarchitecture, an MCM that promises to be at the very least 60% of Intel cost while providing about 40%+- more bandwidth and ABOUT the same TDP.

AMD rattles Nvidia's cage with hardware-based GPU virtualization

rav

What AMD is really saying about VM....

Most graphic workflows do not need a workstation dGPU card.

A good midrange gaming card will do quite nicely.

This is especially true with engineering and architecture firms, they do not need to build-out workstations for every draftsman in the firm. Just the power-users or top modelers and renderers.

The rest can get by quite nicely with an APU and gaming dGPU running in CrossFire mode.
