@The Lord Gord

Gotta disagree about your domain sarcasm. I'm an admin at a ftse100 company and apart from the obvious lack of start button...... I just pin my apps to the task bar. I see no difference in domain functionality. I admit the group policy templates need updating to support IE10 and the Internet admin maintaince has finally gone to be replaced with something usable. So far so good. Yes our GPO's needed work, but they have 10+ years of crap with Hugh swathes of settings and their reason lost in the out sourcing of time from 2 or 3 incumbents.

It connects to files and printers..... What else is there ? Browsing http ?

GPO preferences offer so much more, hell one day I may even be able to get rid of some login scripts.

Yep there are challenges, the KMS needed upgrading, which needs change management representation.

an app based on access2000 runtime with a locked msi has to be manually installed as the developer (not Microsoft) hard coded the paths, and no amount of ACT shims have helped.

UEFI is mainstream at last.

The absolute winner though is hyper-v for development if you've not tried it you are missing out.

I rarely see metro. At the end of the day I just undock chuck the laptop in my bag, and dock again the next day to the same Desktop across 2x24" monitors, it even remembers if i boot directly to the laptop, which w7 had issues with sometime. My machine only reboots now are via WSUS or because an installer insists.

boot to desktop in 8.1 is all I want.

Re: I'll believe it when I see it...

The article is about Microsoft Hyper-V and NOT microsoft virtualPC on W7. HyperV-2008 is free or if you buy a 2008 server license instead of W7 and put on your laptop you can then enable the hyper-v role. Basically ditch the virtualPC and get using HyperV (or a hypervisored VMware) it is much faster.

Re: 16GB - 32GB price

not really the best comparison. A 2 litre car is almost certainly 4 cyclinder and 3 litre is often 6 so not the same engine. Coupled with uprated components such has suspension, brakes, to actually stop the higher spec engine. Apart from that ......

Outsourced

"as a result it will learn" ..... trouble is, amazon don't want to employee techies either. They will also outsource their stuff, all the way down the line; until it will be just one outsource company employing lots of contract managers and a couple of ex-techies with 'architect' and 'manager' in their job title.

They will in turn employee an IT contractor called Ben who will hopefully (if the architect specified it right) recover your data.....

Fortunately my colleague, Ben, is very diligent and will forever remain the IT / Data monkey.

…. and if the data has permanently gone, sack the contractor

Win7 / 8 - Install . refresh - replace

I think some of you have missed the point and some clearly do not understand the current windows architecture.

This methodolgy of installation, replace and refesh is already available with Win7 albeit it doesn't exactly have a user 'button' and is currently for the IT dept. to configure (like magic).

Have a google for 'Win7 deployment scenario'. It is just further enhancing the WIM format (yes WIM) mode of deployment which was introduced with Vista.

LiteTouch deployment with answer files, upgrading, replacing, refresh. It has been around since Vista and is how your machine should be built when it is turned on from new. (not imaged / syspred as days of old)

The days of imaging windows (or flat installs) are gone ..... all hail the WIM ....

Yes you definitely still need backups -> send them to the cloud or wherever just make sure they are backed up

And yes MS will put more than one 'are you really sure ?' you want to continue.

WIM is good technology. The WIM images will still be need to be tweaked by the manufacture to ensure you have all the drivers, but that is no different from a repair disk shipped with the current machine.

Like most corporates, it can be a case of...... problem takes more than so many minutes..... then rebuild it.

It is a major step in the right direction for home users. Not so sure about about windows support people of which I am one....... hmmmm, get me coat.

Panasonic Viera TX-P42ST30

amazon the Panasonic Viera TX-P42ST30,

Panasonic Viera TX-P42ST30

If you don't need in built FreeSat or indeed feel the need to spend more money on getting it professionally calibrated go for the Panasonic Viera TX-P42ST30

It has the same Infinite Black Filter, supports the same 3D (glasses required) as the GT. I can't imagine anyone apart the very serious would change much apart from brightness, colour, contrast etc. And to be fair to Panasonic the defaults are spot on.

The ST loses a couple of features, and doesn't support recording PVR style to a external USB hdd like the GT/VT, but in truth who has not got a dedicated PVR or sky+/ virgin box that is spending that amount on a TV ?

It has the same menus.. is actually slightly faster for gaming. Check the specs.

Best of all it is also around £500. Probably the best value 42 plasma you can buy at the moment. I've no idea why Panasonic are not promoting it more ......
