Apple: We'll tailor Swift to be a fast new programming language

No Perly crapness in sight

Uh, it only has type inference when defining a variable without initial content:

var test; // generates an error

var test = "bla"; // obvious inference

var test = 1; // obvious inference

var test: String; // type declared, no error

Red Hat to ditch MySQL for MariaDB in RHEL 7

Re: > So the guy sold the project ... then went screaming that his project wasn't free anymore

Regardless of who bought the project (did I mention Oracle? Nope I didn't), it is a low act on Monty's part. Open source has their mouths full of how companies (at which the open sourcers work, surprisingly) aren't trustworthy. Open source, by these kinds of actions, isn't much better...

WTF?

From wikipedia:

"Due to selling MySQL to Sun, Widenius earned about €16.6 million in capital gains in 2008 (€16.8 million total income), making the top 10 of highest earners in Finland that year."

So the guy sold the project he founded to SUN, then went screaming that his project wasn't free anymore.. So he created MariaDB, and somehow his project is gaining traction again. Wow. Wonder when he's going to sell MariaDB for another fortune to some company. And forking the project once more. Wish I thought of such a low act. Keep championing that guy, open source, I'm sure you'll get all the coorporate appreciation you deserve :/

When open source eats itself, we win

FAIL

Everybody wins?

The graph shows a *loss* of 0.01 percent for Apache and NGiNX combined, for the graph 'Market Share for Top Servers Across the Million Busiest Sites'. So, Apache/NGiNX combo - the open source part of the graph - lost 100 of the most busy sites on the net. It might not amount to much, but how does everybody win - everybody being open source according to the article - with diminishing open source in the arena?

Mark Zuckerberg doesn't know how to use HTML5

Where does it say that?

Re: Hang on a minute...

It's never mentioned in the video that the apps are using a different back-end. The talk is focussed on the app, the iOS team, et cetera, and how Sencha have built something that performs as good as the Facebook native app.

It would've been nice if they mentioned something like 'oh, hey, and our app uses different input data to account for its loading speed.'

Ungenuine HTML5?

"It’s a position taken by Firefox maker Mozilla, too, which champions HTML5 – genuine HTML5, not the kind promoted by Steve Jobs – as the future."

I'm interested in learning what this kind of ungenuine HTML5 is, exactly..?

Stallman: Jobs exerted 'malign influence' on computing

QdK
WTF?

Yes, WTF people?

Why do you seem to think Jobs thought up this walled garden approach?

Game consoles had it first you know. I want to play my PS3 title on an Xbox. Can't be done. WTF Sony?! Why no emulation Microsoft? Let alone trying to make my toaster play Pacman...

The 'walled garden' approach has both good and bad sides, just as the 'everything goes' model Android uses has up- and downsides. But for all you people who scream they want CHOICE, it baffles me that you apparently don't see you already have it: use Android if you want to run just about anything (made for Android, I must add, since that's not entirely clear to all of you, apparently). Use an iPhone if you have no problem with a walled garden. I have yet to meet anyone who stays with a certain platform because of nonsense like save games or whatnot. Most useful apps have export features.

Why root for a monoculture?? No good will come of it.

Lastly, I'd love someone to explain how to properly worship Apple. I've asked around, but none of the fanboys seem to know. I suspect the reason is I have yet to transcend to the inner Jobsian circle. However, I really want to do something to please the iGods but I'm hesitant to make up my own rituals; what if they're blasphemous for some reason? Don't want to risk that. Anyone?
