Re: Hacking or Deliberate
According to the provided link, Gore won the recount. But this is from The Guardian and we know conservatives hate The Guardian.

Compromising a server in another country in order to attack your intended target used to be common practice. Now, with thousands of trolls at the ready to simply say the IP of the attacker is meaningless, it's only necessary when your target has a proactive IT staff that has already blocked all your country's IP addresses.
I'm sure cheeto, orange julius, the "golden" one, drumpf, whatever one wants to call him could and probably will say the same thing. But he surrounds himself with people that only echo his own prejudice and ignorance back to him out of fear. I'm sure that isn't a fun party to attend.
By lumping Brexit and cheeto jesus together Kotkin muddies waters that are already muddy. Extreme positions exist in both camps, Progressives and Conservatives, but in the states the fact that a Republican has crossed party lines and voted with Democrats on any issue will get that Republican bounced out in the next election by their own party. It is almost impossible to believe anyone that has done any research would not be aware of that. If Kotkin is just talking about people on forums, what does that have to do with anything? He probably doesn't even know when he's being trolled.
Nice guy. Too bad he thought he could do the right thing without someone in authority coming down on him like a ton of bricks. Look at what's on other people's hard drives and if you find anything illegal do screen prints and send it via snail mail to the authorities after you've removed all evidence that you were ever there or ever touched the envelope. And send it to multiple agencies while telling them you did so they won't just pretend not to know. Governments at all levels are like the eye of Sauron. Once it fixes its gaze on you, you're pretty much toast.
As a company gets larger it makes more stupid decisions: Open source tool in place 9 years; decision is made to move from physical server to virtual; idiots can't configure VM's correctly so app that previously handled everything thrown at it starts to crash on a regular basis; instead of correcting the bad configuration, a new app is brought in that will be leased at $500K per year that does not do everything that the old app did, so we're still looking for the second app to buy or lease. Lots of times when someone tells you how much they spent for that shiny new thingy, they're just telling you that they have more money than sense.
it's going to bite your face off.
We're faced with a multitude of PHB's that don't seem to understand something as plain as this. Or maybe they stop listening when we say "No" because they think someone is challenging their authority. Either way it's frustrating to get asked the same question year after year and have to say, "Yes, I could do that, but we'd all get fired and sent to prison after I did, so, no, I'd rather not."
I noticed on several sites when I clicked on links to read about the latest escapades of some of the escapees from the Republican clown car, an add for a medication targeting clinical depression would come up along with an admonition that I needed to tell my physician about my suicidal thoughts. Sorry, wrong party. I'm just reading for the laughs.
Management is a profession in much the same way that Professional Bull Riding is a profession. You get on the bull's back and ride; if you stay on long enough, you win. Fall off and get trampled and you lose. And there's always lots of clowns running around trying to distract everyone from the fact that neither they nor the bull riders have a clue as to what they're doing.
Doctors always think that they're the smartest guy in the room, so if you tell them something like, "You need to use a password longer than 3 characters." They're just going to ignore you. When was the last time you removed someone's spleen on purpose? Second, they're so cheap they squeak when they walk.
First, the golden age of the developer only existed in very large and usually dedicated software companies. Most of us that have worked in medium to small companies have been developer, SysAdmin, Database Admin and whatever else had to be done to get a project up and running. At one company I was the EDI department. Not just a member of the department, the entire department. That made vacations difficult.
Second, Agile is just a bunch of jargon applied to the way most Linux and Unix programmers work anyway to try to get Windows devs to be more productive. Unfortunately, it's now moved into the workplace, so we have Agile environments where you don't get an assigned desk or cube, you have to reserve your work space for when you plan to be in the office. It's now wonderful sitting in a strange area surrounded by marketing types yelling into their cells as I try to debug code someone wrote years ago. You can always make a bad idea worse if you apply it to something that it has nothing to do with.
Technically literate people do themselves and no one a service by constantly coming up with acronyms and aphorisms to obfuscate processes and terms that are already hard for lay people to understand. SQL Server becomes Sequel Server; MySQL becomes MySequel and the poor, newly hired pointy haired boss has no idea what you're talking about. Say what you mean and mean what you say. How hard is that?
Up voted for pointing out the woeful state of American small cars. Even sellers of non-American types just look at you blankly when you ask if that "fill in the blank" comes in a 3 or 5 door hatch with a six speed. If they do bother to rouse from their dream of the ever expanding pickup truck to speak to you, they'll say something like Americans don't like hatchbacks or manual transmissions. Odd, I must have been traded to another country in my sleep. Hope it has universal health care.
Almost didn't vote you down because of the last part, but you seem to be moving the goal posts a bit. Oh, moving to new OS in a month! Bah, bah not possible. Move one server to a newer version of the same OS: Oh, I'll just let that run over night and no one will notice. If the scope of your server and applications is such that you can migrate it over night unattended, then hiring people with expertise to let management know what would be the best upgrade path is not "unacceptable". It would be the professional thing to do. Unless, of course, you were more worried about your revenue stream.
Of course my/our incentive structure was quite different. Fuck it up and spend your some or all of your life in federal prison being guarded by a bunch of pissed off US Marines
Maybe that's why there are so few programmers/developers in the US Armed Forces. Most of the software used by our military is developed by contractors. If you mess up really bad, they just don't extend your contract. That hardly ever happens. Nice story, bro. Zelazny would be proud.
The part they didn't mention, but everyone except the tea party dullards understood is that this was just a pitiful bit of political theater that Rand Paul wants to use in an advertising campaign. "I single handedly stopped that evil bugger Obama from listening in on your phones!" he will say. Even though that is hardly the truth and the provisions of the Patriot Act that were allowed to expire will be reauthorized later this week providing no interruption in warrantless spying on American citizens. Same as it ever was.
At least, I know where the down vote came from. Yes, I know what cancer is. My mother died from it last November. She was 85 and had a good life so no worries.
Back to adult conversation: I forgot to mention War. The republicans are always itching to start a war. Health care is peanuts compared to a medium sized war for any reason. The only thing is war produces casualties and severely injured veterans have to be cared for. They hate that. I bet they're looking for a war where everyone either dies or escapes completely unharmed. Is that why they're always talking about Armageddon? Pricks.
Obamacare, Abortion, Guns. With all the things that really need attention in the U.S., that's all the fright wingers can talk about.Taking the profit motive out of health care blunts that legendary "American Exceptionalism" that's got us so far. Funny, Cuba has a vaccine for cancer and has had for 25 years. Costs $1 per shot. They also have a higher ratio of doctors to patients than the U.S. Maybe they meant "Central American Exceptionalism". Stick that in your iTock, el Jebbe.
So, wow, that's an amazing leap to equate an MCSE with being tech friendly. Quite a lot of the population can make selections from a menu. And some of them even guess which selection is appropriate occasionally. Prickish enough for you?
Paris, cause she's attractive and tech friendly. Sort of.
I had just taken my second full time Linux only development job and moved to a new city. So, I was looking around for a nice place to get my hair cut and stumbled on a little place with several attractive young ladies. Imagine my surprise when the one that was cutting my hair upon finding out I was a developer announced that she and the other young ladies had started taking classes for their MCSE. I know I must have looked surprised and when she asked me what I thought their job prospects would look like once they had said certification in hand I started to laugh. Worst haircut I ever got.
A brewski and a hat was the only thing that got me through that week.
For one thing because time is not physical. It's just a unit of measure. And the one little phrase that so many seemingly intelligent people gloss over in conversations such as these, the amount of energy necessary would approach infinity. Same thing as traveling at the speed of light. Apparently, some people don't get what infinite means. As the subject for movies that we all agree are just ways to waste some time, it's fine. As a subject for serious study? Come on, guys. You've already answered the question. Why keep asking it?
The pints all I need to travel to any space-time continuum I desire.
Do I use our Samsung Chromebooks for real work, development, reports, etc? No. But checking email and checking the real story behind news you see talking heads trying to explain without having to get up and go to the home office is very useful. The Chromebook is not a fire breathing desktop gaming machine, but only a fool would buy one thinking that it is. But it's extremely good at doing what it was intended to do. Many windows laptops can not make that claim.
My B.S. is in Psychology, but in my senior year I found myself spending more and more time in the computer lab writing programs to analyze data from studies my classmates were doing and playing backgammon against the mainframe. At that time, my wife would not let me change majors again so I finished the degree and went back for an Associates in Data Processing. Programming is like the ultimate Skinner box. You try a little something and the results pop up on the screen and you get the reinforcement. And you think, "I wonder what would happen if did this?" And you try it and again you get reinforcement. Of course, people who don't get reinforced don't see it as quite so much fun. That's where skilled programmers who can guide new students come in. And let's be honest, all education is not equal. At my first job as a professional programmer I sat next to a guy with a B.S. in CSC that couldn't format a floppy disk. I had to write a batch file to do it for him to stop him from asking me how to do it every day.
The brewsky is for the best kind of positive reinforcement.
And to extend the safe analogy, guessing the combination of the safe if it is someone's birthday is low tech; actually drilling through a wall and cutting the safe away from the bolts that hold it to the floor takes a much higher level of criminal sophistication and commitment of resources. Lots of people can take wild guesses or less wild guesses if they know you have a habit of using your own birthday as your passcode; very few people have the expertise to actually steal the entire safe. But, to make it easy for every Tom, Dick and whoever to guess your easy password because someone might actually steal the safe? That's a very large logic fail. Make the easy stuff hard and the hard stuff close to impossible, then you can sleep at night.
Paris, 'cause like M$ she has lots of money, but not much idea of how she got it or what to do with it.
The concept of solidity is assumed by the observer. Studies of matter at the subatomic level show that matter is much less solid than it seems. The analogy has been made that atoms are like tiny solar systems with vastly more space in and around them than actual stuff. That and the understanding of how we experience the world around us through sight, sound, touch shows that the construct of reality we build in our minds probably doesn't have that much to do with what is really real.
I am Billy Pilgrim and I have become unstuck in time. Now, I'm just waiting for everyone else to catch up. The tall cool one 'cause it makes it so much easier to become unstuck.
I'm going on 13 years of working primarily in Linux at my real job. My boss tells me which distro we're going to use and supplies the media that's installed on our servers. At home, I have one machine that has the open source version of our company's supported distro on one machine, a copy of Ubuntu on another and two Chromebooks. I have a gaming machine running Win 7 and that's about all I have time for. Gone are the days when I would download a new distro about every other week and try it out. I think that's what they mean when they talk about a market maturing. I still visit DistroWatch.com occasionally, but I'm kind of afraid of wiping out something that's working and I might need for work just for curiosity. And isn't Miller really saying that the distribution mechanism is changing more than that interest in Linux is lessening. The first distro I ever downloaded was over a 56K modem. I'm kind of glad we don't have to do that anymore.
Don't the dudes in question have some prohibition about pictures of a certain "prophet"? The service in question simply edits their pages to display a small picture of said person and, wala, being the totally OCD'd, can't get past the small crit types that they are they implode. Apart from that, being slightly familiar with the powers of even the lowliest SysAdmins, I find it hard to imagine that anyone could put any content on a server that I had scripting privileges on. These protestations that "There's nothing we can do to stop it." ring hollow.
Perhaps, you're simply noting a measure of maturity in the writer. There comes a time in all our lives, if we live long enough, that we realize that life as humans live it is not all that great. Young men of color are being executed in America for jaywalking; people in several parts of the world are being beheaded for various and sundry reasons; and horrible diseases keep popping up to make us suffer and die in huge numbers. All the while rich people break laws with impunity and rarely have to suffer more than a small fine. On top of that, there's the nagging understanding that even under the best of circumstances a large number of us will be dead in 20 to 30 years no matter what we do and you see that outside of young adult fiction and Hollywood there really are very few "happy" endings. So, maybe Mr. Watts is just being realistic. Have a nice weekend!
I bought my first one just to check out and it was taken away from me by wife who is not exactly tech savvy. She likes it because she can be on line and reading email in seconds anywhere in the house whereas the name brand laptop I shelled out $600 bucks for and runs win 8 is pretty much useless if it's not hooked to the wired network and even then it's no speed demon. The second one I bought got taken away from me by my daughter. She's typical of the younger generation in that nothing about technology slows her down, but again the pure speed of the Chromebook in most daily operations made it seem silly to lug around anything with a Microsoft OS on it. I know not to assume national trends based on local experience, but I definitely see something here. Now, I just have to figure out how to crash these other laptops so I can get my own Chromebook. Probably won't have to wait long until someone downloads a patch that bricks them. Oh noes.
I've worked for more than one company that's asked me to spice up my code to make it look like the company was making less money than they actually were and wondered about my health when I said no. I think the real reason the American Mafia is in decline is because normal business has made them redundant.
A few years ago I worked for a company that caused me to have to communicate with people that I thought were developers at Microsoft. Invariably, these "developers" would refer me to section and paragraph of such and such contract to help answer my technical question. Apparently, it has gotten worse there not better.
We find ourselves having this discussion over and over again:
You remember that horrible thing we told you would happen if you forced us to do that thing we told you we should not do? Well, it happened. No, we can't just reboot the whole network. It doesn't work that way. I'll have to get back to you. All my other phones are ringing now.
Oh, wait, do you have your hard drive encrypted, too? Sure it only takes about 10 to 20 seconds for the pre-Windows environment to ask for credentials, but I'm pretty sure any time you see "pre-Windows environment", it's probably Linux. After I authenticate for that, it's another minute or more before I get the Windows 7 login. And my Win PC is a gaming beast. That's pretty much all Windows is good for. IMHO
