Sun's JavaFX must toolup against Adobe - pronto

antonio

excellent Java2D?!

I think one needs a lot of imagination to state that Java2D is excellent. The typical java zealot may be pleased by Java2D API, which are over-engineered as everything else. Take the Image/BufferedImage, for example: lots of classes and the performance still sucks. The only way to have decent graphics performance in Java is using jogl, which cuts out all the unnecessary bloat in Java2D.

Sun to lose lunch money on JavaFX

Thumb Up

XML

Yes, not using XML is a brave choice, and it's the right one. XML contributes to the current perception of java getting bloated. Your example shows how much more readable and concise at the same time is the non-XML declaration than the XML one. Why using XML just because is (ab)used everywhere else? It is time now to start scrapping XML from where it is not appropriate at all.

Apple's Snow Leopard to cut the bloat from Mac OS X

@Paul

I think defining OSX as rubbish is a bit excessive. I understand the advantage of a free OS like Linux, but how many features Linux has introduced in the past years that would have been worth a penny? Linux is now where Solaris was 10 years ago. DTrace and ZFS alone put Solaris years ahead of Linux, yet the Linux folks seems to ignore the fact. OSX has introduced many great technologies like Quartz and all the Core libraries that make the OSX Desktop 10 years ahead of anything else. Try to use the Accessibility features, like the High Contrast, on any Linux and then OSX. You'll see the difference. If Quartz, Quartz Composer, Core Animation, Core Image, Core Audio are not worth the money, let's then go back to the 30 years old X11 to make the Linux zealots happy...

Italians make their own ragu; it is a skill that 99% of them have.

Only the Brits and the Americans are able to eat canned, ketchup based ragu, wherever is made.

Italians

Italians care about how they look, and if there is something that makes them look cooler, they'll have it. Italy is the reign of status symbols. There are more Porsche CayenneS in Forte dei Marmi than in Dubai

If the italians will accept the iPhone as a status symbol, Apple will reach the 10 millions iPhones target just with the Italians.

Paris, because she would be a perfect italian.

Icon

Hey TheRegister,

Can we get a Luca Luciani, aka Napoletone (it's how he mis-pronounces "Napoleone" at the end of the speech) icon? Maybe, his face with the Napoleon's hat?

antonio

@richard

He says more than once in his talk that Napoleon made his masterpiece at Waterloo...

Unless he considers a defeat a masterpiece, he intended Napoleon won.

He's the typical expression of the Italian managerial caste: handsome, arrogant, untalented, ignorant, cocaine sniffer.

This is the reason why italy is doomed

Just to let you know, this guy is on his way to be the No 1 of Telecom Italia. They also say he pissed off Steve Jobs with his arrogant and "I know better than everybody else" attitude when they met regarding the iPhone.

I am italian, so I can say that the translation hides the "quality" of his spoken italian, which is at the level of the average italian footballer.

Unfortunately, this is the kind of skill set that is left over in italy. The best people have long gone abroad. If he is fired, most likely Berlusconi will candidate him in his party.

If you have ever wondered why italian big companies like Parmalat, Telecom, Alitalia are sinking in a sea of debts.. well, now you know!

Paris, because she would run Telecom Italia better than him.

Only Ubuntu left standing, as Flash vuln fells Vista in Pwn2Own hacking contest

Linux

so what?

OSX didn't get hacked. Neither linux nor Vista. So, depending on how smart were the hackers, they are all three reasonably safe.

Although I respect linux and the community that is working hard to give everybody a free, reliable and secure OS, the safari vulnerability will not make me switch to it. It would be useful that more people took a look at the Apple APIs, (core graphics, core image, core animation, core data, etc) and the Quartz compositor, the window manager; many of them would agree that they are 10 years ahead of anything else.

Mac OS X Tiger out, Leopard back in

antonio

@ Webester

"Hope you enjoyed tossing $149 down the drain, again. Running Linux, means never having to go BACK(wards)."

You cannot go backwards with Linux because there is nowhere to go to, as it is still at the start. Linux is now where SunOS was 15 years ago, and until the desktop will be based on X11, it will always be 20 years behind compared to OSX.

Technology improves and evolves, and Linux is most a re-implementation of things appeared on other platform ages ago. The Gnome Desktop is still a joke compared to the Old Classic MacOS and, yes, even Windows.

Apple's Leopard rejects latest version of Java

antonio

Annoying

The fact that Java 1.6 is not ready for leopard is not the problem. It will, given that it was already available for tiger. Surely, Apple want it to take advantage of the leopard features, and delaying the release of Leopard just for this would be non-sense. If you are a Mac developer "sensu-stricto" (i.e. a Cocoa Developer), possibly you couldn't care less about Java.

However, the real problem is that Java on Macs (even in the "classic" era) has always been in late. I am a Java developer (and also a Mac fanboy) and this issue always prevented me to adopt MacOSX as main developing system. Even if I don't need the latest JDK for the development, the fact that I can use it and try it only months after it has been available on the other platforms makes me a bit uncomfortable. And, finally, how long did it take to have Java3D available on Mac?

Microsoft vs European Commission: the verdict

EU fines

I am not a Microsoft fan, but I am suspicious about all these multi-million fines from EC. I remember that EC fined also the creator of Pokemon for the too high price of the Pokemon trading cards. The EC got millions, and I still pay the same price for the cards (my son is a Pokemon fan). It looked like to me more a "tangent" that Pokemon had to pay to be left alone and do the price they wanted.

Microsoft is an easy target to milk money from.

Macs HAD a lot of viruses

Neil,

You must be young, you lucky. Macs have always had the 5% market share, but viruses plagued the original macs as well, as anybody who has owned them in the eighties/nighties can confirm. I still have a floppy case full of anti virus tools, like the then famous Disinfectant. Mac viruses were also more subtle than those affecting MsDOS, which could be threatened only by explicitly executing EXE and COM files. For example, the original mac could be attacked by a virus as soon as an infected floppy was inserted. So, the macs were easy to attack in many different ways and so they had a lot of viruses regardless the negligible market share. I am not saying that OSX is immune, but as any other Unix OS is more difficult to attack than Windows, and this is the major reason why there are far less viruses for OSX, Linux, Solaris than there are for Windows. The market share plays only a secondary role and it is MS propaganda for diverting the attention from their flawed security approach in their OS.
