UK's EE scores network reliability clean sweep, rival dwarves fume

chipxtreme

I regularly get 80mbps on EE on my 1980s built house. Seen as high as 110mbps when I see 4G+ on screen. Much faster than I used to get on 3

Oh dear, Vodafone: Sales dip in UK

chipxtreme

I used to be on vodafone years ago. Worst network to be with!

In my house I get 80mbps on EE, 65mbps on 3, never tested O2 but you get a good 4G signal but with vodafone you barely get a signal and even then its 2G!

I drove down to London last year with a friend who is on Vodafone until her contract expires and I streamed music the whole journey through TuneIn on 3 network without a hitch. She had no signal 10% of the time, 2G 50% of the time and the rest was on 3G. Only in London did she get 4G.

In this day and age where data usage has way overtaken voice calls the importance of a good fast connection is paramount. I was perfectly happy with 3 right up until they took me off my £15 one plan and have since switched to EE where I do get faster speeds and also 4G in a lot more areas.

Three UK: Our MMS prices are up. Get around us with WhatsApp or Skype

chipxtreme

I've never sent an MMS in my life! Why do companies charge so much for just sending a couple of kb file when most people get at least a GB data a month included in package?

Three: We won't hike prices if you say yes to £10.5bn O2 merger

Re: Keeping a watching brief

I'm also on the One Plan @ £15 pcm and so far have had no contact or letter from 3 to tell me I have to come off it, but my mate who took out a one plan @ £20 a short while after me has received the letter.

In response to the signal box, in a previous property I had zero signal and it was before ThreeInTouch was on the market and they charged me £50 for my signal box. They later replaced it with a newer black one for some reason.

I've got a Galaxy S6 that's fully protected against stagefright v1 and v2 vulnerabilites and i'm using samsung firmware - albeit the france release until they push out the update for uk phones.

Apple: Samsung ripped off our phone patent! USPTO: What patent?

chipxtreme

So what you're saying is within weeks of announcing the iphone, samsung managed to change the entire design of the F700 music player to look like the iphone? Or was it more like this is the direction technology was heading and they came up with similar looking items at similar times. Essentially all smart phones/tablets these days are is screens with a few buttons after all.

Phabba-dabba-do: Samsung hypes up Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

chipxtreme

Having owned every Galaxy S device released I can honestly say the only thing I miss from going to S6 from S5 is the waterproof feature. I've never once had to replace a battery in a phone so the removable battery has never been a selling point for me and after having a memory card die on me a couple of days after returning from holiday I will not use another one. Currently having to rely on internal memory on my phone which means I have very limited space and use TuneInRadio for music.

The new features more than make up for battery/sd card and i'll be getting a 128GB one next month

BT claims almost-gigabit connections over COPPER WIRE

My previous property had FTTC and when I moved a couple months back to a town that has fibre and noticed a cabinet at the bottom of the street was looking forward to receiving it again. But no, turns out half the street is ran from that cabinet and the other half (my half) is ran from another cabinet, probably the only one in town that isn't fibre enabled.

Been in touch with Digital Durham and I have to wait 18 months minimum before it will be upgraded. Needless to say i'm looking to move again can't live on 12mb/0.5mb after being used to 76mb/15mb

Phones 4u slips into administration after EE cuts ties with Brit mobe retailer

chipxtreme

If the EE contract ends next year why are they closing now? I haven't been in a phones4u store for a long time but the last time I was in there, they had plenty of pay as you go phones, tablets and other stuff for sale so i'm sure they could at least run for the next year and try and diversify further to keep the business viable. Sad thing is one of the lasses from my place left to start a job at phones4u today, hopefully our place will giver her her job back.

Report: Apple seeking to raise iPhone 6 price by a HUNDRED BUCKS

chipxtreme

Probably increasing the price so that the next Apple v Samsung court case they can claim $3 billion in damages for lost earnings - from people that would never buy an iphone in the first place anyway.

Apple patents touch-sensitive controls for MacBook

WTF! This is similar to the buttons on my samsung tv and many other tv's. Putting them on a laptop does not make it a new idea or anything patentable. Just how stupid are the patent office?

Best budget Android smartphone there is? Must be the Moto G

chipxtreme

I agree with you to a degree. Personally I prefer a larger phone. I currently have a Note 3 which I think is a bit too big and a Nexus 5 which is the optimum size for a smartphone but in trying to get a half decent phone for my brother if you wanted a decent spec it would be a bigger phone but he didn't want a big phone. In the end went with Huawei Y300 with a 4" screen which while isn't the fastest phone is excellent value for money and not too bad. If I was buying him one now would probably get this for him though.

Happy Thanksgiving, Apple. Now how about THREE more patent legal battles for dessert?

chipxtreme

All patents sound like the typical load of horse $hit, but apple gets away with it all the time so got zero sympathy. They won't be able to write Judge Koh and cheque for this one

Facepalm

Article needs updating to reflect what we now know to be the case. Its effectively a non-issue for the average Joe. Until I knew exactly the ramifications of this sticker I was annoyed. As I only buy unlocked handsets anyway and usually stay in UK its not in the slightest bit relevant to me as if I did want to go to a non-uk country, their sim cards would work in my phone as the region lock would of been removed the second I put my 3 UK sim in the phone.

TWO can play this 64-bit mobile game, says Samsung, crossly

chipxtreme

Re: Which fab are Apple using?

The 64bit ARMv8 core's that the A7 chip uses is licensed from ARM. Samsung don't need to "copy" Apple because they will do the same as every other ARM licensee and license the cores for use in future Exyonis SOC's or use whatever Snapdragon chip also uses ARMv8 cores. You clearly are a moron.

Vodafone flashes bulging package at Brits: New 4G service to rival EE, O2

Apple files patent for iPhone enabled auto-adjustable auto interior

Just when you think the apple patents can't get any worse, along comes this. I'm sure some cars already do this sort of thing already. I remember reading a few years back about one car adjusting various factors depending on which key you use as they are programmed to an individual. This is just plain stupid

Hackers crack femtocells to pwn then clone phones

chipxtreme

Oh dear, I have a 3 and EE femtocell at my house as I live near a main road and the builders put a nice barrier between my house and road to help block the noise, but in reality it just blocks mobile phone signals.

The 3 one you have to register phone numbers on to use so I've had to register a few of my friends numbers with 3 for when they come round but the EE one is open to anyone.

Should I be worried?

BT: Ofcom's planned wholesale price cap? Just a smidge too tight

chipxtreme

I live in a 5 year old house on a 6 year old estate but the cabinet that serves it is quite old. We luckily got fibre a couple of months back after the exchange having it for a good 18 months. My daughters aunty lives in a brand new house on a brand new estate and BT have installed an old style copper cabinet to serve the new estate even though their exchange is fibre enabled and there's a fibre cabinet 1/4 mile up the road.

It will probably be years before they get fibre as BT won't install it until there's a decent enough customer base to get their money back and as the estate won't be finished for about 2 years+

Apple surrenders in 'app store' trademark suit against Amazon

Vodafone set to splurge £2.5 MEELLION a DAY building 4G network

chipxtreme

Considering Vodafone's 3G network is rubbish at best where I live, half the places I go I was stuck on G or E speeds which is useless for anything but texts/calls and who uses there phone for that these days I have very little faith that their 4G will be any better. Switching to 3 who admittedly has poor CS but excellent 3G speeds.

'Momentous year' for TalkTalk as it surges from 3rd place to, er, 4th

chipxtreme

Well they'll have one more fibre customer this Wednesday as my cabinet is finally ready 18 months after my exchange was enabled.

BT boss barks at TalkTalk for being 'copper Luddites'

chipxtreme

I'm with TalkTalk and get just short of 12mbs. Our exchange was FTTC enabled about 18 months ago, but never bothered with the cabinet that services us. We finally got an enabled date of 31/3/2013 and at the end of January they started fitting the cabinet and bit by bit I saw them blowing the fibre in and then they dug up the road to get power to it. Been very little action on it for past month but now the enablement date has gone to 31/3/2014!!!! WTF!

Paying a TV tax makes you happy - BBC

chipxtreme
WTF?

I pay £24.12 to Sky a month for every channel and because of this i'm forced to pay the BBC £12.12 a month.

I've checked the planner and not one thing recorded or due to be recorded are on any BBC channel. The only thing I like to watch on the BBC is Top Gear which is about 7 hours a year.

I never watch TV live as I prefer recording stuff and watching later so I can fast forward through the adverts. I don't think its fair that I should be forced to pay 50% of what I pay to sky for a couple of tv channels I never watch.

Re: Android phones running 2.3 still being sold

Actually your 3GS runs a cut down version of ios 6 compared to the version that is on the iphone 5.

I've got two really old android phones here which while officially will never go higher than the 2.3.7 they were supplied with, they both are running cyanogenmod 4.1.2 which has transformed the phones.

Boffin: Android's on-board malware scanner utterly FAILS

chipxtreme

Having owned quite a few Andoid phones and two tablets since introduction starting with 2.0 I believe was my first device and 4.2.1 which runs on my nexus 7 I can honestly say I've not had a single bit of malware on any of my Android devices. I think all the people that claim to of been attacked by malware have probably downloaded a pirated app from a dodgy website infected with it. As i've never ran a dodgy app on any of my devices it could explain why i've never been infected.
