Lenovo cries 'dump our support app' after 'critical' hole found

Cave Dweller

Re: Sigh

I've had good mileage getting blank laptops from PC Specialist, there's likely a few other good companies for custom builds. Windows works like a charm on machines that haven't been tainted by vendor crapware, and these security issues only make the "start from blank" case stronger.

Hey, you, PHONE-FACE! Kickstarter in-car mobe mount will EMBED your phone into your MUG

Cave Dweller

Re: (cranially) embedded mobile technology...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Since most phones have accelerometers, they should be set to take a picture when the phone picks up speed, for "warranty" reasons. You'd get a lovely picture of the second-to-last thing going through the drivers' mind.

'No, I CAN'T write code myself,' admits woman in charge of teaching our kids to code

Cave Dweller

Re: Oh

Exactly. Even the term "year of code" doesn't bode well with me. I'd much rather more emphasis was put on programming and problem solving. Jumping around languages such as C++, Java, Javascript, Pascal, and VB, the "coding" isn't too bad to learn, but learning the patterns, best practices, and elegant solutions are the skills that I'd consider important.

The only 'games' I've had flagged byt MSE is an build of my hobbyist project, which isn't using the Direct3D10 API quite right when switching to fullscreen mode (anyone got an answer? It's always going 1680x1050 instead of 1920x1080...).

I moved from Avast! to MSE a few years ago and never looked back. I've never had any malware issues with either AV, but I prefer MSE because of how straightforward it feels. Little green castle in my notification area = 'salright.

I never liked the looks of Windows Vista, but it eventually grew on me (albeit in Windows 7). I wanted to hate the ribbon UI, but after a few months I'd learned where everything was (and that you can collapse the ribbon).

VS 2010 does everything I want, so I don't see a compelling reason to upgrade yet. If C++ to have the same degree of freakishly good intellisense that C# enjoys I'd be interested, but I respect that's a very tall order.

"Eh, whatever. It's not as if the average person does math (or maths, if you will) anyway."

Optimistic?

A bit cynical, no?

I'd wager that a lot of users would be hard-pushed to find fault with Windows 7. Most of the crap I've encountered are from the PC manufacturers "optimising" Windows, and poor hardware drivers.

That said, I notice a trend of Microsoft making a "new" OS (95, ME, Vista), and then releasing the "fixed" OS (98, XP, 7). Will 8 be the exception to prove the "every other Windows is good" rule?

P.S Windows 2000 sorta doesn't fit the pattern.
