Scare-bnb: Family finds creeper cams hidden in their weekend rental by scanning Wi-Fi

Shane 4

50/50

Here in Australia, There are constant horror stories of airbnb owners houses getting trashed from parties or fights breaking out.

Understandable for the owner wanting to protect their property or even use footage to give to police as evidence if a fight/stabbing occurs.

Camera was not in bathroom or bedrooms so I doubt the intent was for some pervert to spy on anyone in that way.

You don't really want the camera's standing out like dog's balls if you will pardon the expression, They are likely to get smashed or covered.

But at the same time concealing them is always going to look dodgy from others point of view, Even though it's more aesthetic.

It's a catch 22, You list your place as having a security camera and no one will want to rent it, You don't have one and risk having your place trashed with no evidence.

Maybe there needs to be some perks from airbnb company for clients renting places with cameras, Along with better deals/perks on insurance for owners having cameras?

And obviously change public listings to display a symbol for having cameras or not.

NBN dragging Telstra down, carrier wants 5G to haul it up again

Shane 4

Re: The NBN was gold for Telstra

I disagree and think the opposite is true, Coming decade will see even more demand for data as people like me dump greedy cable tv(Foxtel) and opt for streaming services instead.

Then you have 4k that will also become more common place and requires huge amounts of bandwidth, New things such as work from home, Online health/monitoring etc

All these will require more data caps than expensive mobile plans can offer.

5G will compliment a fast cable network, Won't replace it.

Can I give a little tip to any corporation out there, Hire the best person for the job regardless of gender, age, race, belief or watch your company go downhill in future!

You end up with a mediocre workforce instead of a top one, That man or woman that may have had 10+ more years experience on the job could have been huge company growth, But instead you chose the straight out of college person with a bit of paper that has a stamp on it, With also hardly any experience just because they are ......

To me hiring based on gender or race instead of experience and qualifications is discrimination and your company should be sued or cease to exist!

All politicians should be made to live in glass houses, So they have no privacy at all.

Hopefully then at least one of them might have a working brain cell to see the problem.

What next?

How about a compulsory RFID tag under the skin, We can laugh about it now but just wait.

It won't be sold as national security of course, It will be some sort of "convenience" for modern day laziness that affects us all from time to time, Just swipe your arm to pay for groceries.

Sounds good in theory, Until you start getting all those ads in your mail box from places you have just been, Only this time it's not the virtual world but the real one!

It has got to the point where they think the only way is to track everyone on the planet so they may prevent some sort of bad event, But it won't stop it.

There will always be a few that just snap for no reason, May have been a model citizen then something random has happened in life that has triggered them to go on some all out rampage. No backdoor in anything is going to help stop it.

Once again all I see is band aid fixes to bullet wounds, Typical political nonsense.

nbn™ says nobody needs gigabit internet, trumpets XG-Fast at 8Gbps anyway

Shane 4

Re: Why Nobody buys 100mbs

You are thinking exactly like they are!

You are only thinking short term, In 10+ years possibly even less looking at how affordable they are already, People will have UHD tv's and probably in more than one room.

As people ditch cable tv and watch online content that they want to watch when they want to watch it, The access to more bandwidth will become even more relevant.

Home health services / 24/7 health monitoring for older citizens, Online education, The list is endless.

Copper doesn't cut it, It already struggles. There is no way it will handle a larger population who is consuming more data be it for entertainment/work/education/health it doesn't matter.

It's no different than when roadworks makes a new freeway, Only to see they have just made 2 lanes each way when it should have been 3+ for growing suburbs that are right next to it. They always do the cheapest option but it ends up costing more later on to add another lane, Instead of just doing it when the freeway was built.

Ripping up copper and replacing it with "new" copper is ridiculous, The trench is there future proof it by adding fibre optic cable from the start!

Microsoft promises free terrible coffee every month you use Edge

Shane 4

If it is broke DO fix it!

Until I can open folder in a new tab group(which every other browser does including IE), Then Edge isn't even worth using for me.

A simple yet very useful function that many people use and are still requesting on win 10 forums/suggestions, But it's not there in Edge.

Also I want to open a new tab to my own choosing such as Google search, Not some top sites and suggested content, Top Sites or blank page crap.

So how about they fix Edge before even bothering to offer money to use it!

Glad I am not the only one,

Had the same thing happen to me a few years back, Was thinking to myself why the F do I need a car loan for, I had saved up cash for several years in bank and they gave me a bank cheque to give to car dealer, So they know I do not need a loan.

Maybe they were hoping I would give in to temptation, Then go and buy two models up from my car and be in debt for years, Silly buggers!

nbn™ talks up HFC upgrades to gigabit speed

Shane 4

Idiots

Looks like it's official then, We have a bunch of corporate idiots running the show that don't have a clue about tech.

If they build FTTP we don't need to upgrade the network which will save money and wasting time re doing it, By the time NBN is done it will already be time to dig it up and re do the copper because it can't handle future bandwidth needs.

Secondly why are they praising gigabit speeds on old HFC, Why don't they also tell the truth and say that those gigabit speeds are SHARED by all in the street, So you will be lucky to get any where near gigabit speeds especially during peak hour you may not even get 100mbit. They will be making you pay for the "gigabit speed" though regardless.

Shane 4

Buffering

He is right sort of!

But it's not just your ISP and speed,Especially if he is talking about youtube, It is because they changed the way a video buffers with DASH(Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) and it sucks compared to the old way that would let you buffer the whole video and skip through it whenever you like. Even with a 100mbit connection youtube now sucks and stutters so much I find that I have to drop the quality settings down to 720p to have decent playback.

There is extensions such as youtube centre that disables DASH, But it doesn't seem to work for me, Others have had success.

nbn says Telstra's copper in better shape than expected

Shane 4

Link us all the article, Because every one I have read has said the opposite!

Both parties need to stop being a parent!

First they uses tax payers money to hand out to single parents and bludgers, Then it gives baby bonuses to new families like a grandparent would do to help out, Next is first home buyers grants like a mum/dad would chip in for their kids.

Now it is acting on behalf of a parent in censoring things from minors, My advice to all you in government positions is GTFO!

What next RFID chips implanted in newborns, So they can be tracked at all times?

We can all laugh now but just you wait what the future holds, When they are just left alone to pass any law they like, All in the name of "protect the children", "terrorism" or "national security".

Re: Time to wake up

Are you that very same person who defended leaded petrol or DDT all those years ago? lol

Sometimes laws need to be broken and questions need to be asked, And somebody needs to keep a watch on the watchers so they don't abuse their powers!

Who else is going to do it? A government official hired by the government to monitor the government?

I am sure that will go down well. ;)

"Those who think this is just child's play are clueless and most chose to stay that way. When their bank account gets cleaned out or their personal identity is stolen and their world is turned upside down, then they'll start to get in touch with reality and the digital world that we now live in"

Funny you dare say that considering governments around the globe are calling for even less encryption after Paris attacks.

All so they can "monitor terrorists" or "protect the children" and other buzzwords they like to throw around, If they get their way your bank account details and personal identity will be less secure than they are now!

I dread the day where future houses will have to be built entirely out of glass, Just so everyone else can see they are behaving themselves! We can laugh and joke about it now but who knows, Would not surprise me one little bit if RFID tags one day become compulsory, When a child is born one is placed under the skin. A case of let's "protect the children" after all right?

Shane 4

So I take it everyone on the planet can also take their car dealers to court for every speeding fine they receive, Car dealer must be responsible right?

They make it so easy for everyone to put their foot down and go over the limit, They also make nearly every new car able to go over 200km/h, Which is double the allowance in my country on freeways.

I don't see how any ISP or service is responsible for what people are doing with it.

Are gun dealers responsible for any shooting that kills someone, Are drug companies responsible for all the deaths caused by people overdosing or mixing with other medication,

Are bottle shops responsible for all the drunken behaviour and violence that kill others?

The list is endless!

Society may as well collapse if they think this way, Because everything can be blamed on someone else.

If I decided to start a business, selling donuts for example and some dude walks in and decides to eat until he bursts how is that my fault?

I am just offering donuts it's not up to me to tell the guy what to do with them!

Maybe Facebook and Sony should be taken to court for allowing terrorists the ability to communicate and plan attacks?

Where does it all stop?

Telstra's Netflix downloads get EVEN SLOWER

Shane 4

Speeds

I am on Telstra cable 100mbit which is already 3 times faster than the NBN obsolete crap government wants to roll out over here.

I can confirm ever since Netflix arrived here, The cable speeds have become a joke especially around peak time as everyone wants to use the net or stream.

It must be the reason why Telstra gave us cable users DOUBLE the monthly gb allowance from 500gb to 1tb, That was as soon as Netflix came here to try and make up for the crap speeds we now get.

So thank you Netflix for the extra 500gb from competition but also damn you for halving my speeds. lol

Australia’s opposition promises more fibre in national broadband diet

Shane 4

Re: The joke is on us

Don't under estimate Telstra, They were smart.

They knew their old copper network is already well and truly f@%#ed beyond repair and managed to sell it to NBN company for $30 million I think it was or something like that. lol

The ONLY way to do it properly is to run FTTP!

Seems expensive up front but it turns out cheaper in the long run, Idiots in government don't care for "long term" as they only want results now to boost their party.

The cost of the fibre cable has dropped substantially already when NBN was only on the drawing board.

The cost to maintain FTTN and then have to go back and replace it anyway will exceed FTTP's initial cost in the long run. All while Australia falls behind in global broadband speeds and with it potential new start up business's that could have boosted economy and created jobs.

Apple iPhone 6S: Same phone, another day, but TOTALLY DIFFERENT

Shane 4

And I thought $800 was steep for my imported Note II a few years back. lol

'Fix these Windows 10 Horrors': Readers turn their guns on Redmond

Shane 4

Those are only minor things to most of the normal users out there, I am more annoyed by the need to use a Microsoft account to actually use most of the new features in Win 10 like cortana.

Still many of us out there who prefer a local account only for their main pc.

Also the new Edge browser has 3 flaws which will piss off a lot of people out there, Can't open multiple tabs in any of your bookmark folders in one click or any clicks that I can see, Can't open a new tab to a page of your choice such as google search home page, It's either top sites(full of crap like facebook, twitter, amazon etc etc), top sites with news or a blank page. No custom option to open a new tab to a site of your choice.

And the last one is a simple one, Be able to sort your bookmarks by name, Have to currently drag each one to where you want it, A nightmare if you have 100+ bookmarks.

One other thing missing in edge which they will be adding later is extensions, So you can use your ad blocker and themes etc Should have been there from the start in my opinion!

Gone back to using IE/Firefox and Chrome until they can sort the mess out in edge browser.

It is fast though, I'll give it that.

Other than that Win 10 is pretty good, Basically what Windows 8 should have been, It is quite snappy and managed to set up EVERY driver for every piece of hardware I have, Which was a first for me ever. Usually always something windows manages to miss as I have enthusiast parts.

I think if you use the MS account you are going to get screwed, Marketing and spying on you galore.

I would rather just give up the new features like Cortana personal assistant and just use a local account.

Windows 10 Edge: Standards kinda suck yet better than Chrome?

Shane 4

Stability and speed please

All I care about is NOT seeing, "internet explorer has stopped working".

Give me a stable browser that can have at least 10 tabs open without one of them crashing, And then causing the page or tab to not be able to close, Usually requiring a complete browser shutdown and restart. Damn that was annoying in IE.

I like IE's easy layout, Firefox's functions and Chromes speed, Now merge them all into one browser. ;)
