Mud sticks: Microsoft, Windows 10 and reputational damage

Bootneck

I am a home user and have never commented on El Reg before but this article has prompted to do so. I was quite happy with Windows 8.1 and then it felt I was put into a half nelson to install W10 by Microsoft ( I have used every Windows operating system's including and since XP, both at work and at home.) Originally I found it somewhat OK but not as good as W 8.1 and then found out that about dater mining as far as I was concerned that was the end of my Association with Microsoft It was My PC I built it and it was of no concern who I bought things from who I emailed MICROSOFT with my permission or knowledge was infringing on my privacy. I am now running Linux Mint 17.3 64bit and very happy with it and the support is great.

I am a elderly PC user who has only had Microsoft OS on any of my PC's from XP to W8.1 and now I am very dubious about the new offering of W10. During the years of running a PC all home built has become more and more expensive as one has to have more and more security software and other vital software to buy and now I think it is time to move on to a Linux distro. After all these years of running Windows it is rather daunting to change to another type of OS but I have been investigating the multi various distros out there. The one that seems to fit the bill is Makulu 9 aero 64 bit, so I will download that on a spare HD and keep the drive with Windows 8.1 on it in case that I do not get on with Linux, any advice or comment would be very welcome.

BT are crap to

When we tried BT in our area we were promised by their sales staff "up to 10mps" I suppose 0.3mps comes within that remit but not the" not fit for purpose" remit now using a wireless internet provider who provides 8-10mps with no download limit.

What a load of old tosh

I am a 68 year old retired old git and the reason the elderly and many disabled people do not go on line is the cost of the equipment and more likely the relevance to them of what is out there on the web. Have you people ever thought that many elderly only have a government pension topped up with housing allowance how on earth do you expect them to spend £400 on a PC never mind the cost of the ISP monthly charges . Of course there are a proportion of the elderly that can afford the luxury of being to be able to afford the equipment and usually are from the educated/ business classes and have got a reasonable works/private pension.
