(a) Agreed. Lack of official "nearly everything" apps.

(b) It's not as configurable as it might be, for sure. There are multiple browsers available, with an apparent promise of Firefox coming with Windows 10. No choice of keyboards is true, but the keyboard provided is out of this world, what would you want to choose instead?

(c) You don't need to pay for voice navigation. The freely-provided HERE Maps application is one of the platform's strengths IMO.

I'm a very long time Windows Phone fan. My first WP device was a pre-release device that Microsoft gave me under NDA about six months before the first phones were released for sale. I love everything about it and am baffled and saddened by the poor reception it has received from the rest of the world. I've written a number of apps for it, which have proved reasonably successful, and bought half a dozen different devices over the last five years.

But if Microsoft can't fix the "app gap" with Windows 10, then even I will have reached the end of my patience with the platform. I am sick beyond words with the frustration of seeing apps left right and centre, from games to productivity apps, that are not available on my phone. I would love to be able to just blindly assume that any app I see or hear about will be available to me. Instead I pretty much assume that nothing will be available. I reply in embarrassed tones whenever someone recommends an app to me, telling me that it won't be available for my phone. I'm rarely wrong.

So for me, a WinPho fanboy for years, this is the final chance for Microsoft to get it right. Otherwise I guess I'll resign myself to investigating the various Android devices that are out there. It'll break my heart, but I don't think I've any patience left to carry on with the platform the way it is.

No need to move away from VB

Just because C# is more popular is no reason why anyone should abandon VB. They're both top notch languages with extremely strong capabilities, they both run on the same platforms, and can both achieve exactly the same things.

C#'s syntax is better than VB's in some ways, VB's syntax is better than C#'s in others. I love them both, and see no reason at all to hate on VB. It's definitely not "...past time to move on"!

Easy upgrade on my Lumia 820

Upgrade went straight through with no problems for me, but Beamer is sadly MIA here too. Shame, I was rather looking forward to that. Hopefully it'll make an appearance soon!

Try Ctrl+Escape. Or click in the bottom/left corner, like in Windows 7.

No you don't, you just press Start, type "calc" and press Enter. That's admittedly a whole lot more work than on Windows 7 where you would have had instead to press Start, type "calc" and press Enter. Oh, hold on, it's exactly the same.

If you learn how to use it, it's fine. I agree that it should be intuitive enough that you don't need to actually invest time in learning, but then I remember how much trouble I had remembering to right-click things when Windows 95 came out. I pretty much got the hang of that in the end.

I've been using my Lumia 820 (admittedly not one of the models fingered in the article) fairly heavily since I got it ~10 days ago and it's been absolutely stable, no issues or problems whatsoever.

I for one can't wait -- being able to directly develop for Win8 tablets using C# will be heavenly and could well solve a lot of awkward mobile issues that my organisation is facing.

You may not like it, but others certainly do!

Well I'm over the moon with my Windows Phone. And my wife just got one after an having been stuck with an Android phone for the last two years, and she's loving hers too. You naysayers can slag it off all you like, but the truth is, it's a lovely product. Perhaps you should try using one before disregarding it. And it really doesn't need battery-draining dual core processors to make it run smoothly like Android does.

Or alternatively, perhaps "Mobiles Please" (whoever they are) just don't have any decent offers for Windows Phones. They're certainly not a site that I'd be buying from.

Nokia sold only 180 phones in the UK? Garbage. The Lumia is still listed in the top selling phones on a variety of sites, including Vodafone and Three. I think "Mobiles Please" have a hugely inflated view of their significance in the mobile space.
