"Is it just me who thinks it's bizarre that so many new formats have to look like CDs? Why?! "

Standardisation is a good thing. The standard size disks fit into standard sized cases and standard sized storage units.

Not to mention there's probably significant production benefits in having it be the same size - even if the contents of the disk is a brand new technology, you still get savings by being able to use the same size moulds/presses/whatever-else-they-use-for-CD-fab

Which console to buy for GTA

If buying a console primarily to play GTA (as I just did), bear in mind that the XBOX will get two exclusive extra episodes via XBOX Live, something that Microsoft paid Rockstar $50m to secure.

Knowing that there will be GTA content that is only available on the XBOX was more than enough to swing me towards a 360 purchase; beyond that, the comparison between the two seemed largely academic (though the 360's lower price helped too.)

iPhone may sidestep rubbish caller ID suit

@Aubry Thonon

555 is a special reserved code designed to be used in American movies and on American TV, so that fictional phone numbers can be displayed without being callable.

There are occasions where producers have forgotten this, and printed a valid number - often resulting in some poor soul being inundated with calls because their phone number was shown on TV.

I believe there are equivalent codes in other countries, but 555 is the well known one.

"No word on Sun Studio for C.."

Other sources quote Sun Studio as staying for sure, which makes sense as it is vital for the OpenSolaris project.

Hmm...

Will VMware's sales double forever?

Don't bet against Microsoft? Or don't bet on them?

There was a time when everyone knew you didn't bet against Microsoft. If they came into your niche or your industry, you were in trouble. Like them or hate them, you had to respect their ability to dominate everything they touched.

But now? Are they still the same force? As this article shows, they bungled virtualisation. They bungled Vista - years late, buggy as hell, slated by analysts. They also bungled the Internet - the biggest bungle of all: rather than using IE's 95% market share to own the net, they let the upstart Google slip in and are now a distant third with a second-rate search engine that no-one uses.

So while it's true that VMWare must inevitably face competition at some point, I'm not so sure that Microsoft will ever be the main focus of those worries. They really seem to have lost their touch.

Dell's vertical line issues lengthen

Affecting Dell monitors too?

Anyone know if this problem could affect Dell monitors too?

I have a Dell 2405FPW display which is 18 months old. About a month ago, it developed a vertical line exactly like the one described in this article. It's about 3 inches long, starting at the bottom of the display, and appears yellow.

I assumed this was a general fault, but it sounds identical to the laptop problem being described here so maybe it's related?

In any case I assume I should have no problems getting this fixed as a warranty repair - the monitor has a 3 year warranty I believe.
