leading on from Cosmin Roman's point, there are some serious goings on afoot in the mobile linux arena. Angstrom, for instance, is making serious progress and the number of supported handets is slowly increasing.

in the mobile market where we can't yet build our own handsets (like we do our PCs) device-specific ports are crucial. if the naysayers had any idea about linux development, they'd understand this.

personally, i quite like the iPhone handset but i find the GUI a little bit 'Fisher-Price'.

on a serious point, though, i would have liked some reference points about who is using hadoop, successfully. i know Ted tells us that people who use it "don't write about it" but reference would give the article substance and move it further away from 'just an opinion'.

i actually have RPM to thank for helping me discover Slack. it was my inability to compile software from source (due to not being able to find the right bloody RPMs) on a Red Hat box without having to seriously re-adjust compile options (due to so many broken paths, etc) that led me to look for a new distro.

i actually find now that i compile a lot less due to finding linuxpackages.net and (more recently) slacky.eu.

hmmm, i have a few of them. i've also built machines for people three or four years ago and they work just as well now as they did then. all on AMD. not that i'm fanboying AMD, though. just they were a cheaper alternative. i have a couple of old P4's that are still going from about the same period.

oh, i don't know. if you live in Leeds, where they're based, it seems to work fine. i have been enjoying having a rolling 30 day contract with them for a good while now. that said, if you need to speak to the sales/support drones, you're fucked.

pah, loads of room! i've chopped down a slackware install down to about 800MB but that was with a LOT of apps still in. most linuxes come with too many of the same thing as it is.

worth remembering that the mobile companies would love to be rid of those pesky license fees for the OS on their gear.
