US Attorney Gen latest to roast Apple, Google mobe encryption

Drusenija

I wonder if anyone has told them (law enforcement) if they hadn't overstepped the line so much then these companies (Apple, Google, etc) may not feel compelled to put this type of encryption into their devices?

Re: Genuine operators don't help

Even that doesn't solve the issue depending on where you are. Try visiting parts of Asia (yes, I know, outside the scope of most El Reg readers) and they're injecting popup ads directly into my web browsing. I've taken to using OpenVPN on my own phone over a 3G connection whilst abroad, it's ridiculous.

Well duh!

Of course we're the most phished country in the world, the whole place is surrounded by water! Oh, that's not what you meant? Well perhaps you could just enter your credit card details into this "Fishing" website for me and we'll get right on that.

Re: keys to my castle(s)

Technically as 1Password stores your data on a cloud service like Dropbox or iCloud, they don't have even the encrypted keys, unless you think they've built a back door into their software.

Finally coming to their senses

It's nice to see that common sense is starting to prevail here; sometimes I honestly believe that our government forgets that they're there to act on _behalf_ of the people, as opposed to completely against them.

'It's just a skin, honey!'

Des, if your wife asks, just tell her you got a skin or a case mod for it. Besides, if she's clued in enough to know about it (ie, that won't fool her), then I'm sure she'll be able to appreciate the new features!

Not just Dell products

My first laptop, a Sony Vaio Picturebook, suffered from the same problem within 12 months of purchase. That was just over 4 years ago now though, so it's entirely possible it's unrelated.

I'm a tad worried now though, my current lappy is an Inspiron 8600; wonder if the UWXGA screens are affected?
