The four or five wires that form the induction aerial used to power up your bonk card can be exposed just below the surface of the card (try acetone to soften it). They are close to the left hand edge between the signature strip and the mag strip. If they were to be mysteriously severed, then that card would no longer interfere with any of the other cards in your wallet that you actually want to work remotely, like your access card.

Does El Reg with its fine archival resources have the data to do a story on RIPA ? I thinking something which intersperses the quotes from whatever politician was responsible for introducing it, with a chart showing the number of RIPA warrants issued by purpose of issue ?

I recollect being on the other side at the time - banking IT and making buying decisions. I don't remember the exact numbers but it was something like: DOS/Windows licence - $50. OS/2 licence - $250. Right there it was clear that it was never going to fly. IBM was still in mainframe/mini pricing mode, and hadn't yet realised that that model had already died for the brave new PC world.

I think the article is slightly misleading in that it does not include the system spec used, and I would expect MS to put a portion of its AV effort into OS patches rather than their add-on product.

7.1 The targets

Each product was installed on a clean Windows XP Professional target system. The operating system was updated with Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), although no later patches or updates were applied.

A selection of legitimate but old software was preinstalled on the target systems. They included out of date versions of Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Reader.

I gave it a try and it looks like it doesn't remember you between sessions. So you have to sign up for the service again every time you enter a live zone, even if you go back to the same station. Either that or my phone is not Virginal in some way.

Intuitively (= I don't know any of the details of the science involved) I would picture it as a series of slightly out-of-phase helices wrapped together. So you would need separation in the order of the wavelength used, which is quite a large number of waveforms, then x 2 because of the inverse set. So not indefinite scaling, but certainly a chunky increase.

Perhaps they should make it just slightly more complicated, maybe by getting Network Rail and News Intl involved as partners in some way. Then the general populace might collectively realise just how out-moded the old way is of opening a wallet and taking out a twenty pound note to buy twenty pounds worth of gear.
