Two projects to move away from

I have no confidence in the future of either project now.

When projects fall prey to this kind of thing, it _always_ gets worse and turns into a witch hunt where people taking fake offence use it to gain power. The product always suffers.

I'd move away from both now as this kind of thing often means the future of the product is in doubt

AI Superpower?

I've not yet seen anything I would consider "AI" in any meaningful way from anyone. So I'm not too sure what this article actually means

Ok, the software that has been removed is bad and I don't support it one bit.

However, I also think that the importance of having open platforms that anyone can publish their software on can't be overstated.

i'm not sure that a commercial organization should be allowed to determine what I can and can't run on my device. And as a browser supplier, these organizations are increasingly in a position to determine this.

This is abuse of a near monopoly by a company to push their own agenda.

20 years of going backwards

Amazing how 20 years alter and we have windows 10 which is a large step backwards in almost every way.

Price was only part of the problem

The main problem is that over the years they slowly transformed from an interesting small supplier of electronics components to a small but steady customer base into an expensive supplier of tat to consumers who didn't know any better.

That, and the fact that they always had someone to harass you with "hello what are you looking for?" the moment you walked into the store, but someone never had enough people manning the tills to avoid a large queue.

Worrying, after I got fed up with 123-reg a few years ago I started using daily.co.uk who appear, after tracking all the ownership of various companies to owned by the same group anyway and therefore I didn't really move at all :(

Step one done

All the need to do now is remove weyland and systemd and we'll be back to the usable system we had 10 years ago. I'm still hopeful this will happen :)

Even my basic smoke alrams are annoying

We have 4. They came with the house.

They are mains powered but have backup batteries.

I imagine the batteries last a couple of years but with 4 we end up with one of them chirping at us about every 3 months. Always at night... The old battery powered one I had used to last longer than these mains powered ones...

Also the power seems to occasionally flicker where I am about once a month. The lights imperceptably, occasionally enough to reboot a PC. But without fail it causes all of the smoke alarms to go off for a few seconds. Again, always at night.

These are modern, new alarms and they seem worse in every way than the one I had 10 years ago

But it seems to me that they've "acquired" the software unit but in turn are now controlled by HP who own 51% ... So this is really HP acquires UK tech firm (but makes them pay for it....)

Um what? Does that mean their internet is broken? Sounds like they are saying people are having an issue with one function of an application that uses the internet for data.

And if I go away for a few days I'll arrange someone to come feel the cat.

But if I'm away overnight or maybe a weekend occasionally, it's possible to leave enough food for the cat but *better* if it's not available to him all at once.

That doesn't require an internet connected device though, just a timer :)

Can someone calculate the power output of the engines on a typical 747

And compare it with the power generated by covering it with solar cells.

That should give some idea of the energy requirements and how far away they are.

Oh no

Three weeks ago I had one beer in the week, two weeks ago I had two beers, last week I had four beers. I therefore confidently predict that based on this trend by the end of the year I'm going to be drinking at least a million beers a week based on that trend. By easter next year we're going to have to pave over large parts of the country to be able to brew enough beer for me.... By this time next year there is no known way to make that much beer.

They are not comparable.

You can't compare "sales" of windows and android.

One is an actual computer operating system. The other is a kind of phone. They are not the same thing.

You might as well say that cheese is more popular than windows because people eat cheese every week.

What we need

What we need is a *simple* browser that does one thing, and that thing is render basic html. No scripting, no complex tag. it lets you read documents.

I tried it. It seemed to work at marks and spencers.

The use installs an app. The app does what it was meant to.

Ok, the user installed an app that probably did something they didn't want it to but that's hardly android's fault.

Unicode is ruined.

They had one job, which was to assign a few extra characters into 16bit characters instead of 7 bit ascii so more languages could be supported, and they comprehensibly failed to do just that. Unicode is basically an unusable mess and I don't see why anyone supports it.

The problem is there is nothing better.

Apple make microsoft look like saints, plus their stuff is mostly awful shiny useless tat.

Linux was a great alternative until the powers that be decided, microsoft style, to impose the steaming heap that is systemd on us, making all of the big distributions useless.

Basically there is no choice. Microsoft is awful but so is everything else so might as well use it.

Street lights

You don't turn lights on when someone is close, as many people have pointed out, that is unlikely to work. Instead you turn them off when there is no sign of anyone nearby.

Yes that won't work in a big city very well, but in a small residential area you might be able to turn the lights off for quite a few hours. It will still be irritating to people living in the houses though I suppose.
