Apple adds 'S' to iPhone 3G

Better Late Than Never

Its only taken Apple 3 years to include MMS, Voice Dialling, Video Recording and a 3 MP Camera! Yes radical features that no one else has thought of. Im sure Nokia and SE are kicking themselves. Still no idea if you can send files via Bluetooth. Might be bearing it in mind for next year?

D'oh!

Microsoft are really getting the hang of shooting them selfs in the foot. Just when you think they might have learned some lessons after the debacle that was Windows Vista they manage it with Netbooks and Windows 7 Starter Edition (3 applications lol) D'oh!

Paris cos she likes a lot more than 3 at the one time ;)

Re: FOR CRYING OUT LOUD

Thats right they are awaiting sentencing on 15th December 2008. However lawyers are trying to use Human Rights laws to protect their identities, just in case people might hate them?!

How Much Things Change In A Year

On the 23 November 2007 the BBC's website published Baby P's mothers name and address and her partners name. Yet after the recent discussions in Parliament the heavy hand of censorship makes it presence felt. I'm quite sure if it hadn't been brought up in Parliament no would have cared!

Obsolete Already!

Some existing Freeview boxes are already obsolete!

If you live in Sutton Coldfield and have a Daewoo Setpal (and derivatives) then you will find it no longer works. This is because of changes made to the Network Information Table and lack of software updates instantly turned the set top boxes into large paper weights.

There will be more to come. They are planning on using 8k mode in 2012. This will mean a lot more Freeview boxes will be consigned to the technological dustbin.

Farewell then, Symbian

Smartphone?

While I cant really comment on Symbian having never used it. I can say that Windows Mobile is a work in progress. Much like everything Microsoft does! One day they might even get it right but don't hold your breath!

As for Apples iPhone it has all the style but none of the substance. The 3G iPhone still has no mms, and no you cant send those embarrassing pictures of your mates, or the latest and greatest song via Bluetooth on it ether. If you want that go out and buy a bargain basement Pay as You Go phone for £25 instead.

Smartphones still aren't that smart enough I'm afraid. Shame really.

Microsoft's 'Vista Capable' appeal thrown out

The Great Vista Swindle

With leaked emails about Microsoft and Intel lowering the bar to sell low speced laptops as Vista Capable, and Steve Ballmer admitting that Vista is a work in progress. This could be very interesting. Personally I'm looking forward to seeing Microsoft squirm!

Why XP Succeeded Over Vista

XP has probably been Microsoft's most successful OS. Here are the main reasons:

1. XP (NT5.1) was basically Windows 2000 (NT5.0) with a gaudy Teletubbies user interface with a few minor enhancements.

2. Windows 2000 was released in February 2000 and XP in October 2001. This gave software and hardware developers time to build on a stable operating system.

3. XP had been out for just over 5 years before Vista, giving XP a large user base who were quite happy with it.

4. Windows Vista (NT6.0) is a whole new OS with all the software and hardware problems associated with it.

5. People who already have XP wont want to "upgrade to Vista" because their hardware which could be as much as 5 years old just wont run it (don't believe the Microsoft hardware specs for Vista they are BS and even they know it!)

Overall anyone who has XP will probably be happy with it. Anyone who has bought a PC with Vista on it in the last year or so may be happy or frustrated with it. Its certainly a work in progress. Maybe the finished work will be called Windows 7!

Julian
IT Angle

Windows NT6.1 (Windows 7)

I have seen screen shots of Windows 7 build 6519 on Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows. Its labelled Windows 6.1. Since Vista is 6.0 it safe to assume that it will be a revised build of Vista. Possibly more stable (it would be hard to be worse) with some of the features they jettisoned on Vista to get it out in err time! procrastination aside I expect Microsoft will release Windows 7 more or less on time as they have less work to do.

Microsoft gives XP an extra two years to live (kinda)

Hardware Requirements

I guess given Microsoft's over ambitious hardware requirements for Vista they will do the opposite for XP. Therefore its safe to assume a ULCPC will be a 486 with 16mb memory! Yes I know no one makes them any more but how else will they get people to buy Vista!

In It For The Money

MS have been doing this sort of things for years. Give unsuitable hardware specs so manufactures can sell chronically slow PCs. Who cares about the quality of the user experience, think about the MONEY!

The Small Print

The moral of the tale is Always Read The Small Print as Small Print = Large Risk (especially where MS hardware specifications apply).

Personally I would say 800MHz CPU, 512MB of memory and any DirectX 9-capable graphics card specifications is not capable of running Vista. For example Vista will use up approximately 764MB just to boot Vista with a clean install, and thats not even running any other software!

So really you would need 1.5GB unless you want a chronically slow pc.

Blu-ray discs outsell HD DVDs almost 3:1 in Europe

Julian

Joe Public

I agree Philip Cheeseman. The PS3 clouds the statistics. I think when it comes to joe public they will go for HD DVD. Why? The argument would go. "Ive got a HD TV so I must get a HD DVD player"

For what its worth the non techi people ive spoken to seem to be buying HD TVs under the mistaken idea that they will show all pictures in HD! In fact I was in Currys a few weeks ago and the sales woman was telling a prospective punter that his regular DVD player would show HD pictures on the screen of the HD Ready TV he was going to buy!!! I was going to intervene but managed to bite my tongue.

Ofcom moots the 900MHz boot for O2 and Vodafone

Julian

Less Chance Of Making Calls on O2 & Vodafone!

There is a problem here for O2 and Vodafone Customers. They will loose half their network capacity. This means you will have less chance of being able to successfully make a phone call. You will have to get used to those annoying network busy tones and you will have more difficulty sending text messages too. Nice one Ofcom! Bit unfair since O2 and Vodafone wont be able to bid to get their capacity back and are leaving T-Mobile and Oranges alone.

Expect a legal battle over this one all right!

O2 set to ditch handset upgrade lock-in

Not New Really

O2 have been offering Sim only deals 30 day contracts like this for ages. £25 per month gets you 1000 text messages and 2000 off peak any network minutes. Looking at the website today they seem to have ditched this tarrif in favour of 600 minutes and 1000 texts for £25 per month crap!
