"Is it really possible to rig a network to fail in the event of a power failure"?

Apparently he didn't bother saving the routers configuration to the flash memory so the configuration would have been wiped if the power was cycled.

Someone posted a link yesterday to an article which had an interview with one of his workmates who shed a lot more light on the whole situation.

Brits more hooked on mobile tech than Yanks are

Dave

UK vs US

Of course more of us (Brits) use mobiles, for a start we have always had better coverage. The UK is a waaaaay smaller area to have to cover than the US. operators arent just going to start putting up cell towers in the middle of Hicksville where there may or may not be enough users to justify costs. This means that its taken longer for enough coverage to make it worthwhile owning a phone in the states. If you look at it this of course a higher percentage of Brits have them - a large percentage of Merkins live where coverage has been shoddy for years.

As a side point - why should you pay to recieve calls as well? That'd put me off getting one if I didnt have one. Not sure if this is still the case in the US but it was when I lived over yonder.

Five misunderstood Vista features

Dave

@ Fraser

"I have yet to come across badly written software that can't be made to run without Admin access, after suitable tinkering"

Surely the fact you have to tinker shows you its badly written.

I dont think you should have to run regmon & filemon to see exactly what files / keys need to have permissions lowered on for it run.

When XP came out I remember MS making a big deal of software which runs as non admins being properly 'Certified for XP'

To get this cert any software must only need write access to HKEY Current user & the users profile folder at run time. It makes sense. Why should I have to have write access to the windows folder just because some lazy developer decicdes thats the best place for an ini file?

They might have made a complete arse of Vista, but at least they tried with this when XP came out. Shame few developers thought it was a good idea and just carried on lazily writing software.

Dont get me wrong, im not an MS fanboi - infact I've come across plenty of MS apps which dont adhere to this rule, but the only TRUE way to not have shit like the UAC is for people to start coding properly.

Creative threatens developer over home-brewed Vista drivers

Dave

Better drivers

I remember when the Audigy was reasonably new I bought one to use while studying music technology.

The drivers sucked. The latency I got from ASIO was horrendous.

The only way I got it working was using some 'dodgy' drivers from a forum. (Very possibly Daniel_K's I cant remember what they were called)

Guess not much changes over at Creative HQ 'cept those cats getting fatter.

Sadly after an intial out pouring of venom and maybe losing some sales in the short term eventually people will forget and they'll be pimping their shite to some other sucker.

There are a number of Alt-tab replacement programs which give you features similar to vistas.

Oil rig dream bomb taxpayer bill 'astronomical'

Dave

Thoughts from an oil whore

I myself work within the industry. the cost of the incident is not so crazy. Bear in mind 18 choppers were sent out to evac people. These choppers are not just 'sitting around' all operators agree that in the event of a disaster they will all spare any available chopper to fly out to assist. No-one wants to the be the one to say 'you cant have my helicopter, I need it' when people are being burned to death. They will however charge a substancial amount of money for the priviledge. Add to this the fact that most of the costs which are being printed in the press probably include costs for staff (think how much a day some of these fuckers are getting) which were evac'd and you have your figure. I agree that johnny taxpayer should not pay for this. Its about time the rich pricks at the top of the food chain payed out, however given that its really the oil industry and those who make real money from oil who make sure people they can coerce into doing their bidding who get voted into positions of power its of little doubt that they *somehow* pass the cost on to everyone else.

RE: Corporatism and socialism

"I don't understand why socialism is deemed so bad yet corporatism so good. In a corporation, everyone works for the good of the whole."

Generally though for a corporation the only thing which matters is the bottom line therefore ALL other factors are un-important. It doesnt matter what happens to those working for the company / the enviroment etc. as long as money is made. People are working to make the company more money so only for the good of the company. If they fired after 10 years of service with no pension because they've become injured at work the corporation will not help them live.

Corporate responsibilty is nothing but a buzz word to encourage people to spend more money with that company because 'These guys DO care'.

'The Corporation' is a very interesting film in which the Canadian filmmakers discuss the fact that a Corporation often has the rights of a human being. They then look at the fact that if a Corporation was a human being it would in fact be a psychopath.

Not that in practice socialism is any better, generally because they are run by facists instead of someone really working for the common good, but if it was done right then the 'greater good' of the whole of society would be the goal instead of thegrater good of the amount of money lining the shareholders & fat cats pockets.

Leaked email reveals civil service laptop rules

Dave

What sort of mobile?

Not allowing people to take their mobiles /PDAs might be a tad on the harsh side.

If they are using Activesync surely they can just use the handy 'Mobile Admin' tool which allows you to send out a command to delete all emails & contacts which are synced with the Exchange server if the phone goes missing.

If this service is available on a Microsoft system surely other systems have even better loss /theft data loss prevention measures in place.

Granted it's not perfect- all you have to do is keep the device offline & everything is still there but not allowing people to take mobile devices out the office seems to kind of defeat the purpose of a 'mobile' edvice non?
