Amazon's bugging of homes has German boffins worried that Alexa may be an outlaw

a device which uses some cloud services to recognize the words you say can record stuff and store it somewhere on the internet?

Re: Losing customer

even mid-range is almost too good for most people, given how cheap and just all-round great the budget phones have become - with the likes of Xiaomi Mi 8 lite etc... that kind of performace and features were flagship level just a couple of years ago...

Jeez, not now, Iran... Facebook catches Mid East nation running trolly US, UK politics ads

PhilipJ

so where's the misinformation?

Both pictures are spot on.

Maybe the money should be passed over the table not under it - super PACs are surprisingly completely legal.

So... where's the rest? Xiaomi walks away from IPO with less than hoped

PhilipJ

Not really. Their flagship phones cost half as much as flagships from Samsung, Sony etc, and from my experience actually run better and more stable. Not to mention they don't come with all that bloatware that can't be removed like Facebook etc.

Bought a Mi 6 for 320€, the value for the price is incredible. I sure as hell won't buy another Sony/Samsung again, not after the experience with two flagship Xperias...

Re: One of the reasons I abandoned them years ago

Given your use case, you don't need a discrete graphic card at all.

I play games. nVidia has no competition on that market.

ATI has been trying to come up with functional drivers for 30 years, and they still haven't accomplished that.

Binary blob or not, nVidia drivers work.

'Why don't you buy from foreign sites?' asks Commish, snapping on the gloves

PhilipJ

umm, if a shop ships to foreign countries, it usually has at least an English version of its page. Quite often other languages as well.

In the last 6 months, I've ordered more stuff from Germany than from shops in my country - simply because they did not have the products that I wanted, or had very long shipment times whereas the German shops had everything available in their warehouses, ready to be shipped.

The only thing holding back cross-border commerce in my opinion are worries about possible issues with warranty claims.

Re: Who trusts a third party with their authentication?

the whole idea of sharing accounts and passwords with a 3rd party is ridiculous - why in the hell would you use a password at all, when you give it to anyone ?

Re: WAAAAAIT a minute....stop.

It's not my problem when an incompetent vendor goes out of business.

End of life does not mean that all existing copies stop working. There's absolutely nothing wrong with running XP after it's no longer supported, as long as security measures are taken. Like keeping the computers off the network or on a dedicated VLAN with no access to the rest of the network. That desktop with that special exotic unsupported hardware can run another 10-20 years on Windows XP just fine. It just needs to be handled as a security risk, that's all.

PhilipJ

Re: not to diss open source software

of course - since it was unusable without those guest extensions (low resolution desktop etc)

PhilipJ

Re: WAAAAAIT a minute....stop.

To be fair, any decent software vendor has been supporting Windows7 for at least 3 years - if a vendor is not able to provide support for Windows7 almost 5 freaking years (!) after the OS has been released, he's not worthy of my business.

PhilipJ

not to diss open source software

Re: Energy density

If you bothered to look at the article on nature.com that is linked, you would see the image I posted above, as well as a PDF with "Supplementary Table S3 Comparison of energy densities of batteries and EFCs", which contains an information about voltage as well - it is 0.5V

No sign of Half-Life 3 but how about FOURTEEN Steam Machine makers?

PhilipJ

Re: 65 million users, but all of them already have a PC with Steam installed

Valve is not going after PC gamers - they already have that market. Valve is going after console gamers.

And if they manage to deliver console-like experience with these steamboxes, they might as well succeed.

Running a Linux PC with a dumb controller instead of a keyboard is not an issue - XBMC already accomplished that with Xbmcbuntu - where a simple MCE remote can be used to do pretty much everything.

Valve would never make their game a Steam Machine exclusive. That would be a dickish move, and Gabe is better than that.

Linksys's über-hackable WRT wireless router REBORN with 802.11ac
