I helped Amazon.com find an XSS hole and all I got was this lousy t-shirt

Bill the Sys Admin

They will be wishing they gave more than a t shirt next time when somebody decides not to tell them because its not even worth their time.

Rackspace to hit GLOBAL CLOUD REBOOT button to flush out Xen security nasty

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: It is not (of course) that simple

agreed this is the major selling point of the cloud! I agree maybe its not cost effective...but imo its being marketed very poorly if this is the case.

KDE releases ice-cream coloured Plasma 5 just in time for summer

Bill the Sys Admin

The Flat Look

Urghh, Just the same designs everywhere now. This looks all iOS and Androidy to me! Try and have some originality.

ZTE Open C, the Firefox OS mobe you'll almost want, now on eBay

Bill the Sys Admin

I really want to try Firefox OS see what its like. Be nice if they were working on a premium handset, i hope they are for when the OS is a little mature. I would definitely give it a shot.

Google forges a Silver bullet for Android, aims it at Samsung's heart

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Absolutely

@Pascal Monett

100% agree. The stuff HTC and Samsung add on are nothing but bloat. the nexus lines are the best imo just now. Hopefully this will allow more like them.

DreamWorks CEO: Movie downloaders should pay by screen size

Bill the Sys Admin

I don’t actually see something like this being that bad. Why not let the movie be at the cinema for a few weeks then distribute it over services like Netflix? I went off the cinema the day it cost me 30+ pounds to pay for 2 tickets, 2 Juices and a popcorn. Its daylight robbery at cinemas, i want freedom to watch movies but not a year after they have been at the cinema!

Bad luck, n00bs: Mozilla to splurge ADS inside empty Firefox tiles

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Australis and now this?

They must be with ideas like this..I will be gone to chromium pretty sharpish if they start putting ads into my browser.

Turkish president mulls $4.5bn Apple fondleslab school deal

HP Chromebook 11 quietly slips back on Google Play shelves... but where's the FIRE?

Bill the Sys Admin

as oppose being locked into MS? The OS serves a purpose to consume media quickly and easily on the interwebz. If anything its safer for the tech illiterate than windows

Wow, gamers on YouTube really love the Xbox One. It's like they were paid to say that (Hint: they are)

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Honestly...

They don’t get the cash if they say anything negative about it either. Neutral or Good please, nothing else.

Always rely on MS to lower the tone.

HP EliteBook 840G1: Sometimes it's an Ultrabook, sometimes it's not

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: HDD in an Ultrabook?

"I got to see the bloatware in all its glory." haha this made me laugh! Yep its real bad!

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: HDD in an Ultrabook?

I have never had a HP laptop but have helped out a friend who has one. They are obsessed with adding bloatware onto their products! Just seeing the images there of the additional software brings back the nightmares. Just install the OS and leave it HP!

Rarin' to buy an Ubuntu phone? Maybe not until 2015, Canonical man says

Bill the Sys Admin

Lots of choices now!

Just have to wait and see what these OS's are actually like, looking forward to more choice. I enjoy the idea of Firefox OS but really right now as far as im aware its pretty poor. Lots of great alternatives to Android and iOS coming they just need to mature.

Dropbox outage was caused by 'buggy' upgrade: DDoS us? You hardly know us...

Bill the Sys Admin

Fools..?

They made themselves look like fools imo, but never mind.

Hey Linux newbie: If you've never had a taste, try perfect Petra ... mmm, smells like Mint 16

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Yes newbies - try Petra

@Andy "why the hell aren't Mint users getting them all in a timely fashion. Seems pretty risky to put newbies in that position"

This pretty much sums it up. Not that it bothers me in a SUSE user :)

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 ships, but still no RHEL 7 in sight

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Does it really include Docker?

I was under the assumption that Docker is still very young and still under lots of development? I was surprised when I read it came with 6.5 tbh

Dropbox: We're worth $8 BILLION and we'll sell you a 3 per cent slice

Bill the Sys Admin

At least with dropbox there is an actual business and potential to move into new markets (enterprise) with there new features and offerings, the Twitter valuation is just plain stupid. 20 billion!? Are dropbox making money? Or just burning through anything they are making?

Google, Microsoft to drop child sex abuse from basic web search

Bill the Sys Admin

Mixed feelings on this. The disgusting things that are being blocked in this example is obviously good, but cant help but feel this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to deciding what people see and don’t see online.

When three Linux journos go crowdfunding

Bill the Sys Admin

Yes I kept getting that with Linux Format. My sub with them runs out this Christmas and I don’t think ill renew! Might look into Linux Voice but what you said I would very much agree with.

Shuttleworth sorry for 'Open source Tea Party' jibe

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Media Firestorm?

If he is savy as you say, he would have been clever enough to know that calling people who don’t support software "the open source tea party" would have got him bad press.

But he went ahead and did it anyway.

Bill the Sys Admin

Media Firestorm?

Yes, i think the people have the right to know your attempting to censor reviews of Ubuntu the you don’t like! Whether it was deliberate or not. Im of the opinion this was most certainly deliberate. Got that arrogant Shuttleworth attitude all over it.

iTunes-for-corporates private app stores put firms at risk – survey

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: We have a corporate app store.

Out of interest what kind of software you using to automate run this? Currently my guys in my team are looking to do the very same. Cheers.

'Daddy, can I use the BLACK iPAD?': Life with the Surface Pro 2

Bill the Sys Admin

Really good article enjoyed it. I tend to agree with the last guy that had a go on it. Unless im docking it into another monitor then its just to small to get my work done on it (not sure if i can dock it?). Its like the 11 inch mac air, too small again.

13 inch is as small as i would go tbh, I sometimes find my 15 inch laptop to small if I don’t have access to another monitor.

Fury as OS X Mavericks users FORCED to sync contact books with iCloud

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: source

No i dont. But I do for Cyanogenmod which im running currently does come with any of googles closed source stuff as standard.

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: It's not only iCloud. You can also give your data to Google

You don’t have a clue what is reporting back on your phone currently. At least as a open source project we have some idea what’s going on, because we can see the source!

Apple will FAIL in corporate land 'because IT managers hate iPads'

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Enterprise Management

fanboi alert.

They are only as secure as the user that is using the device.

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Dropbox?

Dropbox is hardly the solution for enterprise data. Maybe a similar application, but companies are trying their hardest not to let users use applications like dropbox as they are a security risk.

Cinnamon Desktop: Breaks with GNOME, finds beefed-up Nemo

I find it a nice useful feature in KDE to be honest.

Microsoft plugs Xbox One consoles into its cloud - what could go wrong?

Bill the Sys Admin

As far as im aware have PC devs not been able to do this already....for years?

Why such a big fuss for stuff that has been held back from consoles and should have been there years ago. The devs are getting dedicated servers essentially, and this is nothing new to any gamer that has played more than call of duty: super ops on the xbox or playstation.

Oracle says open source has no place in military apps

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Commercial Software Vendor hates FOSS!

"Certainly if they are anything like UK government depts. are at specifying and obtaining delivery of projects then the whole thing will be a cluster-fuck from beginning to end."

Seconded. This new spine 2.0 project in NHS they have started sounds really interesting. Whether the NHS manage to turn it into one huge "clusterfuck" is yet to be seen. But going by past projects its a ticking time bomb.

MS Word deserves DEATH says Brit SciFi author Charles Stross

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Perhaps

"hasn't used .doc for many versions now."

I think that’s why he got his grump on in the first place, the fact they change the .doc/.docx every version forcing users into upgrading to keep up with their constant change of proprietary formats. Which in reality make no difference to your common user.

So true..

Bill the Sys Admin

Running 12.3 just now and in my opinion its one of the best distro's out there.

WHY didn't Microsoft buy RIM? Us business blokes would have queued for THAT phone

Bill the Sys Admin

"1) RIM never built really good smartphones. The only killer feature was its messaging service, which appealed to the business users wanting it. If you didn't need it, there were better ones."

No the actual build quality from the hardware was second to none. Under the plastic was a metal shell around all the components that stopped tampering or any kind of post forensics. It wasn’t impossible but in comparison to the alternatives they were leaps and bounds ahead.

Only reason I know this was because was present at a conference where the MET police discussed it. Very interesting, because they hated getting BB's because they were so much harder to get any information off.

Google swaps out MySQL, moves to MariaDB

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Does Oracle care?

I think your right to be honest. Anyone that buys Oracle DB's don’t buy MySQL support. They buy closed source OracleDB. MySQL will wither away and mariaDB will take over as open source alternative. Meanwhile oracle will keep making lots of money on OracleDB.

Google Nexus 7 2013: Fondledroids, THE 7-inch slab has arrived

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: iPad Mini 2

Prices are not that close. Think the iPad mini is 270 squid is it not? Making this 70 more for 16Gb versions. If they do go to 2048x1536 might find it struggles with the pixel pushing on games? It was a point made when the nexus 10 had high pixel density.

Penguins, prepare to get SPACED OUT: Ubuntu 13.10's Mir has docked

Bill the Sys Admin

Re: Entire article is full of FUD bullshit

Correct me if im wrong but its going to cause problems for drivers. Proprietary graphics drivers are going to be designed for this window manager and not Wayland. Leaving everyone else that doesn’t want to use Mir with drivers like we have just now. aka sh*t.
